Nothing wrong with a shield arm.

But I would recommend splitting the armor shaving between the shield arm (something you are willing to sacrifice) and the amount you shaved from the legs (something that is worse than losing the arm).

Do people in normal solo pug matches leg 75 ton heavy mechs?

No, not frequently.

But arty is tossed around alot, and jumping from heights at full speed happens frequently - so I personally don't like to shave more than a few points off of (4 to 6) legs - if I have something that is functionally ablative (shield arm with no weapons).

It's been a long time I have been legged unless the opfor was specifically doing "leg training" and going for all legs all the time (they announced so), in those cases, no amount of leg armor would have saved me. My armor values aren't exact as I was just looking to get a Smurphy build up.

The amount of Kniggit in this thread pleases me. Here is my White Kniggit, with extra Ni!

Posted Image

  • All true Kniggits have PPCs. It's in the Battletech codex and lore and fluff.
  • Dual AMS rocks. Maybe not worth its weight, but it looks cool, it sounds cool and it feels cool.
  • XL engine because this build would be too hot and/or slow otherwise.
  • Pulse is a dubstep thing, I think. Something the kids are doing these days.
  • Visually, 2xPPC in the right arm is very nice. It's really useful for poking around corners, and the arm is small enough that you rarely lose your PPC arm if you torso twist. 20 pinpoint damage also stops people dead in their tracks a lot more often than 2 LL shots. It's a psychological thing. It's useful for pinning people or stopping their advance.
Before the BK was released, I vowed I would make lasers+PPCs work. I was happy to find out it wasn't as sub-par as I had feared.

I don't have any Black Knights, but if I did, I would build one like this.

Why?
Most sensible usage for an energy boat.
Nice heat dissipation for the amount of hardpoints.
Nice overall tonnage and speed.
Nice armor and nice STD engine.

All in all, I guess we can say I'd build a nice mech...

That's basically the same build I have for my 6B, except I went with STD300, replaced Endo with Standard and squeezed an extra heatsink in there. It's not as fast, but it very rarely overheats. Also I have 7MPL+1ML, because 8MPL was too hot and heavy.

Why is 5 tons lighter "better" ... and it is actually Less Armor. Your Build shows 416/434 armor and the BK has 462 Max Armor?

Just wish the GH wasn't so ... tall, but yeah, I think I prefer the GH over the BK myself.

Have a look at this:

Done?

Tell me now that the BK has more armour than the GHR-5P...

I've seen better work done on a Quickdraw (minus 1 ML) or Grasshopper on a similar conceptual build.

Clicky

Here's the same loadout but with an XL engine. I'm only gaining speed (and .5 ton AMS ammo, woo) in exchange ST vulnerability. I'll play around with it. I got several Black Knights and they are all basically the same.

BL-6-KNT

You can lose a bit of speed and tweak a bit the components to change the LL for LPL, ad another ML and a heatsink. Of course, you don't have the dual AMS and a bit less leg armour (who aims for the BK legs anyway?), but the heat management is only a bit worse and you have more firepower.

Not to mention that with the right modules the range and cooldown of both weapons systems are pretty similar.

I run that build on mine, its balls nasty.

I don't doubt it's good. As soon as you see a mech in the heavy-assault range with 9 energy hardpoints you know it's going to be boating medium pulses.

I am just. so. tired. of boating medium pulses. I've already got at least two 'mechs where that's the entire gimmick.

It's probably the best build in terms of DPS but maaaan oh man.

So pulse and use all the hardpoints? Getting dangerously close to meta my friend. :D

Didn't even think about Quirks ... so thanks. But, how does that work then? I guess I assumed the armor amount shown took that into consideration but I guess not? Does it add that amount to Front and Back of the Torso's or just the Front?

I know, the dark side is strong in me...

But, is there any other approach to this mech if you want to make it useful? After all is an energy boat so...

And I know, you can slap a PPC (or two, or an ERPPC, who cares) and make it more "fun" (btw, what is fun?), but given the sad state of these two weapons and the fact that this mech has meager quirks, the results are quite bad (IMHO).

I might be a bit biased here, but Amsro's build is probably the most reliable.

Make the goofy thing move fast and play it like a medium with a little more firepower and a little more heat control. You just have to keep it at the front of you mind that the Black Knight is really little more than a 70 ton mech with the survivability of a slow Cicada.

3LL 5ML seems the better way to go if you want to avoid PPCs

Indeed. Energy boats are pretty limited. But I've been on the hunt for something that exceeds the TDR-5SS. The GHR-5N and this BK fit that bill. I prefer the GHR-5N because it jumps.

AFAIK, it adds to the front armour value, so if you have 80/8 (front/rear max. armour points) you should add 13 points to the front value for a total of 93/8. And dont forget the structure bonus.

Not bad...

The BK-6-KNT does well with pulse lasers. Although I run mine with 2xLPL, 5xMPL.

I wouldn't say it exceeds the 5ss by any means, the reliability factor plays a huge role in that.

I think that this build is better on the BL-6B-KNT. A bit more range and a bit less heat. You lose the cooldown bonus, but in a already hot mech this isn't as useful as the heat generation of the 6B. But this is mech which can run the same set up in all the variants, and because its quirks, who cares which variant is used?

The grasshopper 5P has 63 additional armour from quirks, for a total of 479 in that build. which, incidentally, isnt good. It was just a replica of the BK build. This is the one i use, and its my best heavy mech stats wise, after over 100 games so not a small sample size anomaly. It does only have 463 total, so only 1 more than the BK, but it also has 33 additional structure. Its the tank hopper.

Definitely upgrade those LL to ERLLs. BK suffer from lack of ranged hitting power without them. The hit box update to torsos may bring ST into action again. I don't run XL in any of mine because I finally managed to figure out how to stay sideways when getting hit and I lose torsos in brawls.
