Destroyed for want of a 2 C-bill rear view mirror.

A rearview mirror will just show you the back of your cockpit.

What you want is the 360-degree compressed wrap-around view that all the novels talk about, giving you rear and peripheral vision without taking your eyes off the front.

Really? That's what I want? Well get on it! Till then let me mount two big side mirrors on the outside of my head so they look like big silver ears. ANYTHING to let me see behind me without exposing my back armor.

Seriously, PGI... jokes aside, how hard can it be to make a rear view button that just shows me whats behind me?

and also a headache
try to imagine what you will see with 360 degree view, especially in a tonnel when walls will move across the screen in both directions at the same time

360 view in 180 is a stupid idea. I just want the rear view cam that we had in MW4.

Yeah this, along with so many other things core to BattleTech, are sorely missing in this game.

Let's see, the list of some of the bigger missing items as I can recall off the top of my intoxicated head:

1. 360view/rear view of some sort.
2. Magnetic Anomaly detection (seismic is a 'so-so' replacement).
3. Swappable ammo types.
4. All the additional IS weapons we're missing at this point in the time line.
5. IS numerical superiority vs. Clan Technology Superiority
6. A frickin' HEAT AFFECTS TABLE.

You gotta think a step further... yes rear view camera AND a crosshair in the middle so you can mount rear firing lasers :P

We have a winner.
While your at it, I'd also like my mech to be able to kneel.

There are lots of things I'd like added to the game, but rearview isn't actually one of them.

I think the limited scope of vision is good for making stealth a thing, sneaking up from behind or dashing by when a mech is turned away is great fun. 360 vision would ruin that aspect of the gameplay.

How would you do 360 degree vision? Oculus? Because that's not what I am saying. Just a toggle to look behind you to see why you can't back up. Is it a friendly? A rock? A column of ants blocking your mighty assault? It wouldn't be on all the time so you could still stealth behind the assault and kill it in a mech a third of its size...

I mean, I'm not asking for a miracle like size to matter. :)

In PGI's defense, this is not a simple thing to do in CryEngine; without significant coding, all your weapons will fire wherever you look. While this was somewhat amusing to do in the early versions of MWLL, there is a good reason the rear view camera was removed until it could be properly implemented.

This is probably the most difficult thing to implement ever. An extra person or two on on team, even in a 12v12 can make a huge difference and would require Clan mechs to become hugely overpowered, to the point that people would most likely stop driving them entirely outside of CW. This would require monstrous amounts of testing just to get it in the ballpark, to say nothing of getting it exactly right.

Quite probably you're right HOWEVER, as it is now, there's really no incentive for IS to fight clans.

We point back to Turkayyid again, where the numbers bore out the problem:

In an scenario where clan 'mechs get to bring the same numbers as IS, the clans can do 20% less damage, killing 20% MORE 'mechs.

That means that the typical IS pilot has to do 20% MORE damage JUST to stay EVEN with the Clans.

What's that 20% boil down to?

Clan weapon greater range.
Clan XL engine survivability.

Clan 'mechs are 'having their cake and eating it too' with all the current advantages:

1. XL engines that can survive a torso loss.
2. SMALL XL engines (one less crit location in the ST's) that means a reduced chance of being crit'd AND allows for additional weapons/ammo to be loaded in the extra slot.
3. Enhanced weapon range.
4. Lighter weapons.
5. SMALLER weapons (many requiring one less crit slot than the IS equivalent).

This results in Clan 'mechs being able to BE FASTER, HIT HARDER, and HIT FROM LONGER range, all the while being able to SURVIVE better than their IS equivalent.

It really isn't that hard to see how out of whack the current system is, and that's even with the watered down Clan tech we're currently having to suffer.

Let me state this yet again, I'm all for the Clans being as powerful as they are supposed to be in CW, AS LONG AS, the IS gets to bring the greater numbers they are supposed to have.

Yeah, yeah, public queues take it on the chin in this scenario.

And?

No one is forcing anyone to bring IS 'mechs in the public queues, go ahead and let it be Clan only, or the few die hard IS centric players out there.

You ARE forced to bring IS 'mechs in CW, and due to the significant advantages Clan 'mechs have over the IS equivalent, it's really not worth it for IS players to even show up. The IS players have to be as perfect as possible, and hope that the Clanners make all the mistakes during the match to have a real chance at winning.

It's funny, in the 90s my caddy had thermal on the windshield and a rear mounted camera. Why can't my mech have these things?

They already have a toggle for when weapons can fire. Holding down rear view look button? Weapons can't fire.
