Best I can think of is targeting lenses not being able to focus correctly?
Then again, I think it's suppose to be for max range only and not total range. For max range, it would make more sense and be useful for limiting long range metas. As currently implemented (which may be imperfect, and might be a bug)... It's dumb to hinder a laser's effective ranges too...

I didn't mind the max range of clan weapons getting a nerf, as they would remain effective for longer ranges still, but share similar max ranges as IS weapons (while still weighting less, taking less crits and dealing typically more damage). The no lock penalty is effecting clan weapons more, which I feel is unfair. That's too much of a nerf, and seems like a double penalty to me.

The 'lens focusing' justification still just doesn't sit right with me.

Are Clans OP? Damn right they are. They're supposed to be. The IS is already, proportionally, WAY more on par to Clan tech than they were at any point in canon. There's a much simpler solution to this to bring some balance between IS and Clan that doesn't involve nerfing Clan mechs down to the point that they're basically just hot IS mechs with different color HUDs: bring in the later era IS tech. Bring is the IS ER mediums, ER Smalls, Rotary ACs, Light and Heavy PPCs, Light and Heavy Gauss. None of these would honestly take that much coding, they would spice the game up ENORMOUSLY in terms of the kinds of builds you can run, and it would let the Clan mechs be superior to base IS tech, like they should be, but give the IS an answer to level the field a bit.

I've been predicting since they said they were going to requirk and nerf laser-vomit builds that Gauss/PPC would return as the new meta, and now everyone is saying it. There's no reason not to. Jump-sniping was meta for some time, they nerfed that. Autocannon brawling followed, they nerfed that. Between the AC nerfs and the quirkening, Gauss/PPC was the meta and there's every indication it will return the moment the quirks disappear. And as someone who runs a LOT of Gauss, and runs teams with a lot of Gauss, you think people ***** about getting wrecked now, wait until they're getting face-spammed by an entire coordinated team of Gauss/PPCs. They'll BEG for laser-vomit back. When we stack up Gauss, stuff like this happens:

And that was with just 4 dual Gauss mechs and a number of my lower tier pilots. Wait until every single mech from medium to assault is carrying dual Gauss or Gauss/PPC combo. And guess what, PGI, I don't need a flashing red light to tell me I've hit my target with Gauss/PPC. I run dual gauss more than any other weapon combo, so I, for one, welcome our new meta overlords, but PGI has another thing coming if they think they're swapping to a more noob-friendly environment with this.

Didn't say it was the best explanation, just that it was a possible explanation. ;)

As far as the clan remark... I'm very tired of hearing this statement. Yes. In lore they were very powerful, but they also had several things that limited that, such as an honor code, fewer numbers, a bidding system (which reduced their numbers more), repair/rearm costs, etc. However, in this game, we have none of that to help balance.

I will give you credit over many other people who have said that line, you at least considered other ways to balance the IS side. For that, I'm thankful. I may disagree (to some extent) with your stance, but I can appreciate that you've done more thought than "It's suppose to be OP, so give me OP". (Though I agree that future tech could help balance IS verse clan tech, but it wouldn't solve everything. Actually, it would make balance harder, as there would be more on the plate to try and balance. But, I think that might be a discussion for a different time/topic?)

Just a thought, if anyone see this topic elsewhere, would you be so kind to pm me and direct me to it. I mean pgi try to balance things, people are saying mwo is not a lore, etc.

Why don't they implement the system most mech warrior game had previously, that is each faction can install each other weapon. I mean in the lore IS mech CAN install clan weapons its just a matter of finding it and or able to buy it. Aside from that the only advantage clan really have is the Omni thingie where an arm an be modified with laser, ballistic, missile, etc and where as for IS a laser arm can only install laser weaponry. In fact in the previous mech warrior games (well I played MW4 merc mostly). Is mech, due to its previous heavier weaponry, actually have the advantage of having more space (for ammo, equipment or more weapon) due to lighter clan weapon. Why can't this system works in mwo?

Ballance the clans easy remove the Xp and C-bill rewards for Kill assists and targeting support.
That should Rein in their popularity.
I like the idea of using your Clan targeting computer to lock on and deliver more damage at beyond normal range

It is timley to look at the MadCat's ballance as it is one of the Mech being made available for advanced start on steam

That would do little to balance the Clans performance in game. It would just punish players in a match in earnings and experience for using a Clan mech. Competitive players would continue to use Clan mechs, while the Space Broke would avoid them to make some earnings. I don't consider this a good balance mechanic...
