Best I can think of is targeting lenses not being able to focus correctly?
Then again, I think it's suppose to be for max range only and not total range. For max range, it would make more sense and be useful for limiting long range metas. As currently implemented (which may be imperfect, and might be a bug)... It's dumb to hinder a laser's effective ranges too...
I didn't mind the max range of clan weapons getting a nerf, as they would remain effective for longer ranges still, but share similar max ranges as IS weapons (while still weighting less, taking less crits and dealing typically more damage). The no lock penalty is effecting clan weapons more, which I feel is unfair. That's too much of a nerf, and seems like a double penalty to me.
The 'lens focusing' justification still just doesn't sit right with me.
Are Clans OP? Damn right they are. They're supposed to be. The IS is already, proportionally, WAY more on par to Clan tech than they were at any point in canon. There's a much simpler solution to this to bring some balance between IS and Clan that doesn't involve nerfing Clan mechs down to the point that they're basically just hot IS mechs with different color HUDs: bring in the later era IS tech. Bring is the IS ER mediums, ER Smalls, Rotary ACs, Light and Heavy PPCs, Light and Heavy Gauss. None of these would honestly take that much coding, they would spice the game up ENORMOUSLY in terms of the kinds of builds you can run, and it would let the Clan mechs be superior to base IS tech, like they should be, but give the IS an answer to level the field a bit.
I've been predicting since they said they were going to requirk and nerf laser-vomit builds that Gauss/PPC would return as the new meta, and now everyone is saying it. There's no reason not to. Jump-sniping was meta for some time, they nerfed that. Autocannon brawling followed, they nerfed that. Between the AC nerfs and the quirkening, Gauss/PPC was the meta and there's every indication it will return the moment the quirks disappear. And as someone who runs a LOT of Gauss, and runs teams with a lot of Gauss, you think people ***** about getting wrecked now, wait until they're getting face-spammed by an entire coordinated team of Gauss/PPCs. They'll BEG for laser-vomit back. When we stack up Gauss, stuff like this happens:
And that was with just 4 dual Gauss mechs and a number of my lower tier pilots. Wait until every single mech from medium to assault is carrying dual Gauss or Gauss/PPC combo. And guess what, PGI, I don't need a flashing red light to tell me I've hit my target with Gauss/PPC. I run dual gauss more than any other weapon combo, so I, for one, welcome our new meta overlords, but PGI has another thing coming if they think they're swapping to a more noob-friendly environment with this.
