Yes - in Tier 3 your are expected to carry the Team - to Pilot a good Heavy or Assault or a top Medium Mech bcs if not you are matched with an opponent that uses a better Mech than you and from the "Avalanche of Loss" will start and you will rarely get a win.

Basically PSR lets you get matched with people with up to 2 tier level difference. Before you were matched with people from T5-T2 (where T4 newbies are most numerous and T2 players were very few), but now you are matched with people from T5-T1 (Where T4-5 are less and T2 players are more with tiny T1 players).
You will need to up your skill level, cause the bar has risen noticeably. People can actually hit the mechs they are shooting at in T3.

PGI did never officially state this - we know only for sure Tier 1 Players never will meet Tier 4 and 5.
Did PGI say anything different officially meanwhile?

Ah it figures. I am doing the best I can but I'm only 1 out of 12. On most of the games I'm within the top 4 players on the team, some of them I'm top damage dealer, and only a few unlucky ones I get clusterfucked randomly cause I'm driving a slow mech and my nubcake team blob is running ahead and leaving their slow heavies behind. I guess I just need to be more lucky!

PGI stated that PSR is meant to let you fight with people of your skill level.

I can personally confirm since I made a small survey during my ascent to T1. During prime time in T2 I fought a lot of T3 players, but in T1 a lot of of them were T1-2.

That is true but surely means optimal conditions when the Player Pool contains enough Players - its pretty certain that you meet a broader range of Players when the Player Pool is small.

Which is not the fault of the system. There has to be a release valve; otherwise the queue time would be unbearable.

Tier 1 player will not play against tier 4 or tier 5 players.
But tier 1 to tier 5 can be mixed on a single team.

This makes sense. I swear I've spectated people playing their first games ever.
You're moving up so you're clearly doing what you need to be doing. If you are in fact ranking at the top of your team then like others have said you really need to bring weight. It sounds like you're already bringing a big mech so make sure you have a loadout that lets you carry a bad team. I'm normally in the top few on my team so I forgo fun builds and take my laser vomit so I can trade well, not get in to fair fights, survive to fight the whole match and more often than not, win. I hate being all try-hard but having such bad match making on the Oceanic server and playing 2, maybe 3 matches an hour I want to win.

I was matched up against Spr1ggan (or is it Spr1ggen?) yesterday, who I guess is an upper tier 1 player. I'm sure he was less than thrilled to be stuck in a match with Tier 3 players, and see his whole team crumble rather rapidly. Kind of makes my quest to become Tier 1 seem a bit more pointless, because no matter how good you are at MWO, there's always a fair chance that MM will stick you on a rubbish team in a T3-T4 match, instead of letting you wait for a better match.

Don't expect that to change in Tier 2,...

If you have proof of that then I would send it in to PGI since it should be considered a bug. Having teams mixing tier 1 to tier 5 against teams that are tier 3+ is just bad matchmaking. It should never happen. Tier 1 should never play in a match with tier 4 or 5 ... not just against them.

It's not a bug, unless you want PGI to block the ability for players to make their own groups. The no tier 1 versus no tier 4/5 only applies in solo queue. Player made groups can contain players from any tier, and so you can get tier 1s playing against tier 5s in group queue because it averages the groups.

Obviously player made groups can contain anyone.
The comment I was replying to seemed to imply that the matchmaker could place a tier 1 player in a team with tier 5 players as long as the opposing team only contained tier 3 and above. His comment appeared to be directed to the solo queue. If so, I would consider it a bug if the matchmaker was allowed to mix tier 1 and tier 5 on the same team.
On the other hand, when making matches in the group queue the matchmaker likely just looks at the average PSR for the team when forming the match since it does not care what tier individual players might be in. In a group match, depending on the average team PSR, a tier 1 might well find themselves both grouped with and playing against a tier 5 but that would be by choice and design.

I'm almost always in the top 4 every match. No matter the weight class. Bringing weight isn't always the answer. But it often is.
I seem to suffer no matter what I do sometimes. If I bring an assault all the lights die doing 30 damage and contributing nothing. I bring a light and the opposite occurs. Rinse repeat.
One guy can only do so much out of 12 others.
