The word ass isnt offensive. Suggesting to set your enemies ass on fire in a game where we literally set each others ass on fire can't be asserted a offensive either. I don't think either can be argued with. Now, if at xmas dinner i told the guy in from of me that i would set his ass on fire, that would be a different story.

Apparently have not been to my Xmas Parties!

Good so my complaint worked :P But in all honesty it serves you right for having a rather stupid name, maybe next time you will think a tad before doing something a 12 year old would think twice about.

You know i disagree with that, The names of people can tell you if you want to be friend with them or avoid them from a mile away. Id rather know right away than force people to act nice.

It's called context, look into it.

There are obviously those who find profanity in any context offensive and while I don't care what you say or write in game,I can easily see why someone might take the time to report it. It just makes it more likely to happen now that it is so easily done.

Here's the rub. What languages should we consider in judging names? Should it be English only, English and French, some other list, or all languages?

I think PGI should clearly define this.

It is if I say it is. See that is the beauty of the victimhood society, anything can be offensive to anyone. Everything is awesome and awful all at the same time.

Not my rules but they are the rules currently in play.

Knowing only one language, I couldn't get offended in another language if I wanted to so I'll leave that to those who speak those other languages.

I think you missed a subtle point.

For example, a name might be perfectly fine to Chinese-only speakers, is offensive only to English-only speakers, and is meaningless to others. Should it be banned?

It should've been replaced with "Taco bell" to at least keep the meaning the same

You know I've always thought companies were losing out on a lot of goodwill buy not having fun like this more often. It reminds me of what Samsung Canada did a few phones back, someone asked on Facebook for a free phone and drew a childish dragon roaring fire as incentive. Samsung said no, but complimented the picture and had someone draw an equally childish picture of a kangaroo riding a unicycle as repayment. Went on to make global news that day.

Also before someone reports me (as there have been several innuendos thrown my way in game), I am named after this:

As others have stated already: facts do not matters in the slightest when it comes to emotional people reporting other people. So take your facts and common sense elsewhere ;)

Just because society continues to dumb down and embrace profanity as "expression" (instead of what it truly is, a lazy mind unable to find a better way to express itself) has not changed that yet.

There are words in common usage today that used to be considered profanity. And words that are considered hate speech today that weren't a few generations ago, hell, there are words that are considered hate speech today that were acceptable to use as insults when I was a kid. Language changes.

However, the fallacy that naughty language indicates a "lazy mind" is a lazy stereotype subscribed to by those that value haughty garbage. If I may be so bold as to quote the late Frank Zappa, "They're just words."

Context should matter. To say otherwise is just silly.

or crutches.

Do I value haughty language? I know not, but educated speech does tickle my ears more merrily than the common "herpaderp" slung about today, yes.

It may be "just words" but you see, when tossed about lazily and constantly, those words lose their power. Time was, you tossed out an F-Bomb, heads snapped around, because it meant something just got real.

Now it's just the beginning of a litany of foul spewing because some schmuck lost at candy crush.

So perhaps It's not "haughty" language I value, but language in general, and when used as a crutch, you weaken language as a whole. It's probably why I find a Joss Whedon dialogue far more enjoyable than one by 50cent.

So sad. ;)

You ever find it funny how in north america we can make light of the greatest genocide the world has seen and it's either considered funny or at worst in bad taste, but you drink a real beer or show a tittie on public TV and it's like "SOCIETY IS MORALLY BANKRUPT"

Shakespeare was his day's "herpaderp".

What I find interesting, etymologically speaking, is that some words that are considered profane today were not so in the past, and were, in fact, part of everyday conversations used by the aristocrats in their time.
