I guess PGI wants to get in on the Steam Holiday Sale. It's good timing, insofar as that goes, and hopefully the initial rebalance update will suffice.
At least get the website updated and modernized. There are too many things missing or incomplete, basic things that new or prospective players expect to find.

Steam will put Mwo on the radar. Since there are a lot of gamers who only go through Steam.
Does this mean we will have CW phase 3 soon?

even if not.. least we'll all have plenty of newcomers to kill, or new blood for our units (not to mention hopefully put a lot more people into CW so there's more actual fights and less waiting).

I think this is a great idea PGI!! Good one on ya for bringing this to Steam!!
Especially considering there are so many games on steam that are in Alpha and looking for money from people, they are all going to flock to this game.
Again!! Well done!!
Youd fit in well on the PGI dev team

CW Phase 3 is essentially another beta of CW (CW Phase 2 is sadly irrelevant, noone remembers how bad the changes were for the most part).

Taking it at face value is a pretty bad idea. The Ghost Damage was a terrible idea, but they went through the trouble of implementing it.
They DIDN'T take the easy and logical route of editing the variables such as damage (like they did range, that was a good, logical and positive change) or heat...but did something that required entirely new code, and was rubbish.
We're still waiting 2 years now for "Aggressive Weapons Balance", which hasn't even happened on the PTS, let alone live.
We're vocal, because we know things could go terribly. There's potential for good...but past experience says bad things will happen.
Paul, who is reading this as we speak, hasn't made ideal decisions regarding balance in the past. Normalizing things that shouldn't have been normalize, not normalizing those that should.
AC2 and MG nerfs. Worthless Flamers for 3 years?
Yeah....I have to say, don't expect PTS4 to bring much. I am curious about Ghost Torsi though; mechs with a "Full Body Structure" quirk get them. Not sure if that's Working as Intended™.

We just care for the game and want people to see it at it's best. We've learned to deal with the bugs, poor balance and terrible optimization, but we also know that many others will not.
The new tutorial is nice, but the NPE leaves a lot to be desired and will leave a lot of newbies dead, frustrated, and gone.

PGI is serving up a tremendous opportunity for the MWO Community to come together and grow. But it will be up to us and our use of in-game VOIP and these forums to cement the imminent gains in our player base by engaging with Steam-gamers and encouraging them / helping them to learn the game.
I lan on doing my part, I hope many of us take the time and make the effort to welcome our newest gamers.

On the other hand, these new players will get suckered into buying mechs and whatever packs they might notice so more money for PGI. I would be happy about this if I was convinced PGI actually used their money correctly.

Let's be honest here, most of us are still here because we dumped a lot of money on the game and are getting our money's worth, or we only care about MechWarrior. This is the only current MechWarrior game (AFAIK), and a good number of us grew up loving MechWarrior and kinda knew what's up. Getting a bunch of next generation players into this game will be pretty hard. Sure, we'll get some players, but MWO, without a lot of polish, will lose a massive amount of potential players it could have gotten if it was more polished. Maybe mid-2016 would have been a better time when a lot of ongoing work for polishing the game is done. This is a no going back commitment, so making the most of it will be very important for the future of the game. Most of us would like the game to do well, which is why we say things need to be done before the Steam release.
New players really need more lore to keep them attracted along with more tutorials for the steep learning curve. If new players need to ask around for using some of the most important mechanics of the game (aka the mechlab), then the tutorial is clearly not enough. The tutorial doesn't cover ECM, AMS, jumpjets, or MASC. Lore? Yeah... sarna anyone? Also, if you happened to have missed it, this game is not in alpha nor beta. We're going to have a number of players expecting a fully released game. MWO has come a long way, but the polishing is not ideal for a steam release (look at all those no signal monitors... I would eat a hat if not a single steam review mentions them).
I'm not here for PGI. I'm not here for MechWarrior:Online. I'm only here for MechWarrior.
Another thought: I don't think steam has as expensive IRL money costs for content as MWO. Maybe PGI should make some sort of lottery space crates...

But, god...
Steam launch?
Now?
With the current state of the game?
