Sorry about the Caps heading, but Steam just announced what they are calling "Greenlight". Basically it shines a light on Indie and small developers to help show their game to the public, and make it more recognized. If it receives enough recognition and fanbase, they will adopt it into their store and sell it through their online store (Steam). Wanted to know if this would be a consideration for this game, though I'd like the devs to get a look at it too. The information is all here: http://steamcommunity.com/greenlight/

Thanks Fellas (And Ladies)!

As much as I love steam, I don't think it's the right place for MWO.

Problem is: Valve will want their share of anything sold via Steam. So it's a rather ambivalent decision to place one's game there.

Hardly looking at 'indie and small developers' here - this is a major project with a lot of funding and momentum. It doesn't need Steam for publicity, and it doesn't need to pay Steam a %.

Do we really need yet another 20 pages of "MWO doesn't need Steam (or any other similar pile of crap for that matter)" responses?

it really just comes down to what Steam will want from MWO?.... and is it worth that trouble ? would hate to see Steam leech off the Devs hard work and the the success of MWO...

There are alot of Scum Bags in the Steam community... they are bound to eventually find MWO anyway...

Sad part about being Free to Play, is that games like that tend to attract the Scum of the Earth... the F2P games are free and Scum tend to like ruining others gaming experience...

Bound to find alot that will try and find a way to Bot, Leech Exp/C-Bills during battles, find exploits ect ect... cause E-Peen fights and flame wars... Hate Each other... Target innocent players... and the Steam community for the most part are good at that lol...

I'm a big Steam fan, but being a part of their store places restrictions on what the devs can do to interact with the community. Both how they talk to us, and what they can sell us. I guess it would depend on how well they were able to negotiate that. Tribes Ascend recently joined Steam, it's another Free2Play game supported by micro-transactions. They don't seem to have changed much other than gaining a lot of people picking up the game and coming to try it out.

Look at all these morons yelling "No" with no evidence to back up their opinions. When pushed, they'll pull out BS responses such as "Phone Support Was Terrible" and the like, or cite their experience back in 2005. (That's seven years ago, people.)

If MWO shows up on Greenlight, I'll be voting for it and annoying the ever-loving **** out of my buddies to get it on Steam.

Steam takes a cut of the profits and this game does not need steam so at this point I give a hesitant 'no' because steam could possibly provide more exposure.

Some people seem to have given a reason, and not an insult accompanied by a hypothetical anecdote.

Russ commented on this and it sums up to somthing like: Steam usually takes a huge cut, which might threaten the future of MW:O
Personally, I'm not against Steam, but I really don't want to see PGI starved because of this. Imagine that a huge percentage of our money would end up with Steam, which did squat for the franchise so far. Doesn't sit right with me if that's how it's gonna be played out in the end.
Besides, nothing stops us from adding this game manually to our Steam browsers and launch the game through Steam.

Pro's:
  • Steam raises game awareness and brings more people to the game.
  • You can have micro-transactions outside of steam (Tribes Ascend does this).
  • Steam may add a number of features.
  • Community Groups.
  • Community Events.
  • Instant Messanger Chat.
  • Lets your friends know what your playing, encourages them to join in.
  • Steam Workshop.
  • Steam Trading.
Both:
  • May cause errors or delays with installation.
Con's:
  • Steam takes a cut of sales of the game \ DLC sold through them (Less $ for development).
  • Some people have issues getting Steam to work properly on their PC. (not me)
  • May mean more running on your computer (Can run Tribes Ascend without Steam after install).
  • EA claims Steam wouldn't let them do micro-transactions outside of Steam (Yet other games manage this).

Ultimately its a mixed blessing. The contracts with distributors\developers are bound by NDA so we don't know the exact figures involved unless we've personally worked with Steam on a game distributed by them (which is likely few to none of our forum base). While Tribes Ascend has its own in-client shop (as does Super Monday Night combat), there may be cuts still involved. Tribes Ascend and most if not all of the MMO's have their own stand-alone clients that don't require steam to be in the background.

[edit]

Bah, the numbered points don't translate, but are still here when I edit. boooo!

Let's also remember that the steam client has its own, built-in voice support. If Valve were to broaden that up to group chatting the VOIP solution would be found.

I'd like to see MWO on Steam, but I'd be surprised if it happened. You have to give some control of your game (and money) to Valve.

Although IMHO the added (massive) exposure Steam would give would make up for it....
