I saw that too - and I have to assume it is a variant issue, not a case of physical changes due to MechLab customizations. That would be nice, of course, but absurd amounts of work... and all things said so far indicate that variants will be different visually, but changes made in MechLab wont.
Still, that leaves the question of what variant that is? Does any known Atlas variant pack a LRM 5 (or 10) with a SRM 4?

No HUD also means no displaying player names, since otherwise they'd have to paint out all names of the non-staff beta testers floating in the HUD (the post implies this is the live closed beta build, not the internal dev build which shows Tester1 tester2 as the playernames)

that was a GREAT story, and it makes me want to play all the more. I'm literally 'X'ing' out the days on my calendar every evening in a countdown to 'Founders Day.'
seriously though.. please write more of these stories, pleasepleaseplease?

Not sure that's true - do modular mech design, since they're forcing to hardpoints that drastically limits the number of "shapes" for the same weapon they would need. Then on generating the mech frame think you just reference a look-up based on the variant, weapon and location to pull the appropriate shape... Agree some time to actually build the various wireframes, but probably not as much as we might think.

My comment was more based on the fact that the viewpoint in the final shot is about 50 feet in the air and all other mechs at that point were dead, so probably not a "cockpit cam" as was stated to be plan for KO'd players. They've stated they're limiting this initially in the interest of avoiding an information advantage to either team but would be cool if it could be incorporated for public access eventually (or maybe the devs do it for high-profile planet matches)
