I can't use a joystick. Mostly because I'm too lazy to learn how to do it right, but also because I do well with a mouse anyway.

I got thrustmaster left over from X3 I found it to be a great joystick for the cost. As long as you a stick with SCCSI Adapter (might have the wrong word) your computer should be able to use it.

I played Mechwarrior 2 with both a mouse and a joystick.

I found the mouse to be more selective with your shots because you scroll to the point you want to shoot and hit it it made leg shots very easy for max salvage.

the Joystick gives you so much more flexablity giving you that torso twist so you can fire and move.
In the end its up to you to decide whats better.

Thanks

Hrm, thinking about the number of toggles and axes needed for a proper mech sim, and ideas about the mapping...

axes:
chassis left/right - rudder pedals or kbd a/d
chassis forward/reverse - throttle or kbd w/s
torso right/left - head tracker, left/right arrow, other kbd keys or joystick twist, joystick hat?
torso up/down - head tracker, up/down arrow, other kbd keys, or joystick hat?
targeting left/right - mouse, joystick x axis
targeting up/down - mouse, joystick y axis

(i'm assuming that arms can't be targeted separately than the torso; while that would be really cool, i'm not sure how it would be accomplished...?)

Toggles:
weapon selection (or separate triggers)

shutdown/startup
crouch
ECM/emissions

Intermittent:
weapon fire
Jump jets
shutdown override
eject
voice comm
coolant flush?
TAG?
recenter torso?

The toggles and switches are manageable with any number of keyboards, macros, or pads, but I do get stuck a bit on all the axes... if you want to manage without a LOT of keyboard acrobatics, it seems like you need pedals, a throttle with lots of toggles or equivalent, a head tracker, and either a multibutton mouse or hotas-style joystick...

I remember the virtual world sims, they had beginner modes (targeting locked to torso, torso recenter, etc.) but using em really limited your performance... I really like the advanced mode, but not sure that the wife will tolerate me building a cockpit pod at home...

mechwarriors use joysticks to pilot there mechs and not mice
check the video footage :D no where inside of any mech in any game do you EVER find a mouse
every cockpit ive ever seen in and BT or MW game there has always been a joystick at the controls

so using a mouse is just wrong and not within canon ;)
LOL

Look up "how to build your own trackir" it is an infrared headtracking kit that while normally costs 120 it can be built for 40 all you need is a ps3 eye camera. an old floppy disk, and a whole lot of moxie , that's why i love these light mech matches. sorry got all Duncan here.

anyway you could aim with that. that also covers torso movement. for me i got flight sim pedals to rotate my legs and a throttle to power them. i probably won't even need a joystick.so if joystick aiming is bothering you try that.

and if you don't like to diy, you could go all out like this guy did. I'm sure there are others, but this one is just the one I happened to find.

I'm with Wrel, I've had so much fun using the 'stick but the mouse is ten times better. MWO need to be equally good with 'sticks as mice and support dual 'sticks. It would make the gaming experience legendary and finally move pc gaming tech forward. Something all us pc guys r craving, am I wrong?

Last I read, the arm and torso reticule was locked. While they adjust at different rates, you can't aim them separately.

I wouldn't use TrackIR to twist the torso. I'm assuming you don't have it? Anyway, you may find the average person has a tendency to move around some while gaming. It may be a pretty mild movement, and from a cockpit PoV it feels natural, but if you link torso twist to it, it's more likely you'll be throwing off your aim by twisting when you don't intend too. It's a bit like people who start to drive out of their car lane when looking to the left or right.

There's no coolant flush, but you'll want a switch for "Heat Shutdown Override"

I started MW2 with a joystick, but since mech games and wing commander/tie fighter games disappeared i've been playing with mouse/keyboard. I think you can aim better with a mouse, though a joystick is still better for a space/flight sim.

I think the biggest advantage of a joystick is the amount of buttons you have, but i may just buy a mouse with more buttons. Love the nostalgia of joysticks, but i want my aiming to be precise.

I've probably be switching between my trusty Sidewinder 2 FF and Mouse + Keyboard until I figure out what roles each work for.

If you remember, mechs have a limited torso rotation so even twitch reactions won't matter because your reticule will be catching up to your mouse

you do not need the ps3 eye camera. I used a standard 15 dollar microsoft lifecam 3.0 or 3000 wtfever. the hard part was making the LED hat. really fun project though and its sweet to see it work. I used the freetrack program took a while to set up but so fun.

Any ones thoughts of the G600 mmo as a MWO mouse? I haven't seen it in person.

Sorry to Necro an old thread, but I was wondering how that Stragegic Commander worked out for you.
