Again, old vets have more GXP than can be used in game at the moment. The idea is to force you to re-roll and re-level your machine to an extent if you choose to reset it. No P2W, no old vet war chest of cbills and gxp advantage.

People will hate me for this but make it MC. They need to monetize something other than mechs in this game. Reseting the skill tree looks like a good place for it myself. Make people choose between redoing the skill tree or occupying another mech bay.

I also like the suggestions people had for weapons from different manufacturers being MC only items giving non combat bonuses ie more cbills for one, another more xp, another more gxp. You could even add in a training tree so pilots could put points into that so that they could skill up faster. Downside is eventually they will have to pay the MC to reset it once they have maxed the xp in the mech.

Whatever it is, I would like two key facets:

1. Limited number of unlocks or selections, with more options in total than can be unlocked (make us choose which ones we want for what mechs)

2. Each skill has an associated disadvantage - no free lunch, no skill is a pure upgrade to make the mech better - it's just a way to make the mech more specialized in one regard or another.

Examples: Skill that increases top speed AND slightly reduces accel/decel; Skill that reduces cooldown (inc. fire rate) of lasers, but also increases their burn time

You can have a movement tree, weapons tree, and special tree
Movement tree has skills that involve speed, accel/decel, torso twist range and speed, hill climb ability, jj thrust
Weapons tree has branches for each type of weapon: energy, ballistic, missile
Special tree has skills like gyro stabilization, sensor range, target info gathering speed

I want choices - you can't unlock everything.

And I want sidegrades; move faster but be hotter or more range but less cooldown or whatever.

Side grades as options would be good. You get a bigger bonus but have the downside to deal with but unlike the origional weapon modules lets not make them all have excess heat as the trade off.
Still give the normal options though. Ie MPL cooldown +2% or a sidegrade MPL cooldown +4% with range -4% (tier one rank of 5 or 10, numbers are totally arbitrary).

Thinking for balance you could not have more than one thing be affected. If you choose a side grade that reduces cooldown for a MPL then you cannot pick the regular one to stack with it, or any other side grade that would affect cooldown for that matter.

I would love a modular skill tree where you can fine tune your build etc

Thats a mistake. Players should be able to freely change roles between games.

Because youre allowed to change weight classes between games... and certain roles just dont go with certain weight classes. Its wrong to lock people into specific roles when you allow them to freely switch between weight classes. No one wants to be stuck as an assault jenner for example... because they cant afford to respec to another role.

Thats exactly what I suggested.

Just use the module system, and you slot skills as skill modules. So if I want speed tweak on my jenner then I stick the speed tweak module in one of the jenner's skill module slots.

However the list of available skills that you could slot in a skill module would be determined by the piloting skill tree you choose (assault/strike, command/support, recon/pursuit would be the three piloting skill trees you could pick). So only the recon/pursuit piloting tree would be able to use the speed tweak module as an example.

Where the system should be monetized is the unlocking/buying of skill modules. They would cost GXP to unlock just like modules do already. And they would cost a lot of cbills/MC.

I'd rather have a non-linear skill tree. That way you have to choose which path you want rather than just being required to always take the same skills for every mech.

I want to see this for the mechs AND the pilot....

Yes - this. Think Borderlands/KOTOR three tree systems. E.g. Skirmisher, Brawler, Sniper, Scout, etc. With some combination of three of them on each chassis. Can even do different trees within a chassis. Adds a lot more depth to the configuration (and creates a lot possible balance as well though) and with the ability to re-spec increases the amount of experimentation and replayabiliy for the chassis.

Instead of a skill tree that just adds flat bonuses for all of those mechs, I want the skill tree to unlock deeper customization and tuning for each mech characteristic.

Basically, the mechlab should get a new tab labeled "Tuning". Within that tab there would be sliders that adjust a mechs' characteristics. Increasing one attribute would decrease another. These need not even be sliders. They could work as flat sidegrades. For instance:

-Twist X would increase twist capability at the cost of side torso internals (cutting away support structures increases mobility, while increasing support decreases mobility).

-Speed tweak would increase speed by removing leg supports to increase the length of a mech's stride, resulting in increased fall damage.

-Kinetic burst increases a mech's acceleration at the cost of turning speed.

-Jump boost can increase boost power at the cost of burn duration.

The skill tree would then have players use XP to unlock the ability to make these changes.

if they go for specialized skill trees, they should provide respec tokens after each balance pass...

there should be no respec tokens lmao. this isnt some korean game.

you should be able to change your pilot role whenever you want for free to fit whatever mech youre piloting.

I own all four weight classes of mech. Its dumb if I have to spend GXP/MC to respec every time I change mechs so my pilot role matches my mech.

Some people switch up the mechs they play every game. So changing pilot roles to match the mech youre playing should be both easy and free.

Yeah hence why I think GXP or CBills is superior to MC resets.

They change to much stuff with balance passes and the like.

If you do MC, people will accuse them of balancing things to make you spend money to change your skill builds.

As a revamp, I would just select all lines in the code related to skill tree, hit backspace then ctrl+s. Done.

There's no need for skill trees or levels in a Mechwarrior game. It just gives unfair advantages to players and support pointless grinding.

I don't want to be a level 82 Direwolf in epic raiding gear. I want to win or lose because you or me are better players in a perfectly fair and equal environment.

There is definitely a need for skill trees in order to promote role warfare. That element of the game is completely lacking.

But the inclusion of skill trees doesnt necessitate giving some players an unfair advantage. Its simple really: just give all players the same number of skill points regardless of whether theyve been playing 1 day or 3 years.

Remove the grind entirely and just add the skill tree for the sake of making the game more enjoyable.

While I agree in nature with this there needs to be a hook or a reason to play other than pure competition. The quirk system and meta already allow for an unfair advantage to some degree. Why not allow us to build paper to the current flavor of the month's rock?

There's no need to do any kind of skill tree resets if you make these tweaks happen on a per-mech basis Just have the skill tree unlock tuning or skills for your mechs and then tune individual mechs in the mechlab. It's that simple.

would even fit the mechwarrior franchise
