I like BT alot better without shields though. Though I'm certain there were environmental shields of some kind (biodome type) but combat energy shields nah. Mean light mechs could possibly take as much damage as heavies basically everything might be able to take 3 times as much damage.

The star wars movies are our "future" being told from a point beyond when they take place. Tis a bit confusing.

If they wanted to put in shields (I don't know why, but if they did) they could make them more like Sins of a Solar Empire shields where they only mitigate damage rather than stopping it completely to prevent this.

And yes hearing about your distant future from the perspective of an even more distant future is very confusing. I guess George put that in to **** with us.

Hmmm, lasers and glass. The thermal energy dumped by a laser is in the IR range (such as in a CO2 laser used in industrial cutting or the weaponised lasers in development now). Reflecting just the IR content would mean virtually no thermal energy dumped on target, though the visible wavelengths would still go through the glass potentially blinding the pilot.

Not that there should be any visible light because lasers are monochromatic :P

Ditto for UV, x-ray and microwave lasers for that matter. UV can be filtered / reflected, x-ray absorbed (leaded glass) and microwaves can be bounced with a fine metal mesh. So the tech is already there. I'd be surprised if similar (but more advanced) stuff wasn't built into mech windows.

Well Star Wars would be even farther in the future then Battletech and they have glass (Transparisteel) though oddly all of their tech seems to go backwards for awhile once the emperor gains power. But thats besides the point. If Star Wars still has a type of glass that can take laser hits why can't battletech?

A LONG TIME AGO...in a galaxy far far away. So, actually the Star Wars folk are like, stone age. haha

It does blind them....

2 things one is polaization

the second is the pilots eyeware... most of them have a protective set of glasses on that allow the HUD info to be shown to them

Oakleys, definitely Oakleys...

Some Mechs don't have see through material at all. Some mechs have cockpit deep in the mech and have senors and cameras and a large view screen that show them the battlefield... of course the fluff is always a bit different from book to book : \

I really like this , however sensor jamming yadayadas could make them blind no?

I don't recall a Mech ever taking a direct Gauss Rifle hit to the cockpit without the pilot being killed, I know Victor Davion's Dire Wolf took a Gauss hit but it was a ricochet off his shoulder, even then he was in a wheelchair for a while after. also Phelan Kell's Dire Wolf took a pair of PPC's to the cockpit which left him with no ferro-glass, or life support and burns on any part of his body not covered by the neurohelmet, boots, and cooling vest (they never say how severe).

So every person and animal within range of refracting laser light and without eye protection is blind.

I can imagine it now. Mech pilots walking through a battlefield and putting little goggles on all the wildlife before the action goes down.

Once we figure this out we can tackle how Superman caught a falling Lois Lane without her splattering in his arms.

In industry right now we have small applications of diamond and clear sapphire glass being used. Laser emitters come to mind actually.

Cockpit windows for F-35s and British helicopters too. Science Channel had a pretty decent clip on it on one of its many "how its made" shows. Was pretty slick how they used it. And remember, a Ruby is just a red sapphire so any "ruby" applications fall into the realm of Corundum (crystalline Aluminum Oxide) products. The impurity's just add the colors we all know and love.

If it happens in the game is history and you played it the fact you remember proves my point, this isn't real life and you can't quote the BT bible at all times :) remember the introduction of mercenary's? My shields are down and I'm going to be a sitting duck out there you better hurry up!

Or maybe I imagined it.... dang this shrooms.

It was ... I'm going to by a sitting Duck down there.
