So, he pretty much said that if we combined the numbers of steam players and players that play throught the old, normal client, the game would sit in the top50 of steam.

Lets check then, shall we?

He said "firmly" so let's say he means top 40-50.

These numbers are from "right now", which is around the highest phase for every game on steam.

tl;dr: MWO probably has about 8000-6500 peak players every day.

Can anyone remember what the counter showed during close beta? Were the numbers higher or lower?

I believe MWO would easily be in the top25, if everyone used steam.

Sorry, not related but I can't believe AOE is still riding the charts so strong. Puts these modern day rts' to shame

IF this were true there would be no reason to hide it.

AoE II is still the most skill based and fun RTS I have ever played.
The only thing that gets close for me is CoH 1

This is why I didn't rage at the whole "on an island" comment. Because maybe they were.

I want to say that the counter went away around October 2012 and around August and September 2012 there was usually a bit over 3000. It of course varied but give or take 1000 seems about right. This is just going off memory though.

Not concurrent. Tuk numbers are totals for the entire event.

Apparently according to Steamspy, 200K people downloaded the game on Steam, with about 122K uniques that actually booted it up. 3.75K concurrent players yesterday.

It's a little bit worrying that we got a lower peak than a week ago, but maybe that's because it was new back then and featured more prominently in the store.

Might also have had some stand alone users that gave steam a try and said nah, I'll go back to stand alone. Hard telling though.

Tera's pretty newbie/F2P friendly in terms of MMOs (I've played it for awhile) but like most MMOs each major patch brings in a tier grind for gear which I am not really fond of. If MWO can maintain or exceed the rankings there then that would be great.

Also we should compare the rankings to other F2P MMOs as well instead of just everything.

Edit:

Also by the same logic if Tera and other similar titles added their numbers out of Steam then they'd probably be boosted by the same amount that MWO would be boosted if all number were combined.

Well I don't know about that. The opening for AoE 2 is quite **** and defines the entire course of the game. Sheep poaching, resource towering etc. can all screw stuff over fast. I haven't played it in at least thirteen years but I did play it a ton back in the day and remember all of that.

Supreme Commander (vanilla) had more depth than AoE 2 and in my opinion is the greatest RTS ever made... but unfortunately a bunch of whiners complained and forced Forged Alliance to butcher the game and vanilla play died off.

Don't get me wrong, AoE 2 was awesome, but from a FFA perspective, SupCom was and still is unmatched.

also from twitter

"Any chance you guys could make both numbers public? now that we can see the steam playerbase anyways?"

Russ: "It's under consideration"

Dawn of War Dark Crusade is more fun I'd say, but AoE II HD is still frigging awesome. wasted so many hours in both.
DoW II is basically a reskinned CoH, and that was pretty good too

I'm sure I've seen something like 350 and 6500 in closed beta. All my screen shots say 1-3k though, Obviously that changed depending on time of day and how close to a patch it was. The counter wasn't in the game too long so not many screenies of it,
