Hive Rat is a relatively new name for me. It comes from the name of an adventuring party from Sigil in the D&D 2e Planescape pen and paper days.

Old handle was Dirty Lizard, which came from the name of a bar on the Abyss (same time frame as above), but everyone always thought it carried sexual connotations so I abandoned it.

planescape FTW!!

Started off WIth Ironside, which was actually my handle for the first game i ever played on the internet....Mechwarrior 2. (love the Warhammer IIC) have used that name ever since but it is often taken and rather than add numbers to my name i have used a number of different versions. Ironrapax, Ironreaper and no Ironreaver, since it flows better.

my normal handle is Stygia, but it wasn;t allowed, not sure if it was taken or just not permitted so taking a Que from Wraith:the oblivion i named myself after the soul stuff alloy the hierarchy used to arm their soldiers

My nick was a joke by friends, which used to play Counter-Strike and Battlefield with me.

One day, one of them moanted around, that I yell all the time in the internet cafe or at Teamspeak. Because he was working for a company which plans and sell audio and light systems, he told me there was messure scale beside dB calles 'Phon'.

So he gave me the nick: High Phon

I never lossed it and because HighPhon looks ugly I tired it with HiPhon.

But somehow the Nick was gone on different Networks. SO I tried it with Hyphon.

The nick was born...

I usually go through little "phases" in gaming in which I think a certain username sounds extremely interesting to say/hear. Usually they're stolen from things I think sound cool as well because who needs originality?

Oftentimes, I did really stupid names when I was younger (for example, Zuka 'Zamamee was a constant alias of mine a few years back), but when it came to choose a username for this, it was either TBD Devastator (the name of a torpedo bomber of early WWII) or Avalokitesvara (which I have very little idea where I got it from, but it's the name of a deity).

Because we all know 1940s torpedo bombers don't fit well with mechs and lasers, I believe the choice was obvious.

Tangelis is a name from one of my own short stories. In EQ I played a Paladin with whom I totally ripped off his name from RA Salvatore Deudermont. I was really into the lore though so I started writting my own short stories about the Paladins life, Tangelis was what I named his son. I really like the name and as it appears I have never had an issue using it as a handle for anything.

"The Wildcard" call sign is what I used in battletech as a kid, it has followed me whenever a nickname or a callsign is required. Incidently I stick to the call signs suggestion of playing cards when needing to name certain things. For example, all the mechs I build (pen and paper) or the PC games have all been named after cards or phrases. IE: One eyed Jack, Aces and Eights, Queen of swords. Completel;y for my own amusement but hey, I guess that's what it's all about in the end.

The enemy 'commander' might find it harder to select me as primary target over a voice application. =)

Played DaoC, WoT, EvE and several other pvp titles.

Well I have been Bluescuba for a long while now. The blue part of the nick fits with my duality of on one side being moody; and the other being my tendancy to tell rude jokes and stories on TS. The scuba part, comes from me taking a 2 year break from work in Thailand, where I spent most of my time (when not drinking to excess or bedding lonely girls on holiday :P ) scuba diving.

So there you go Bluescuba

I don't like adding numbers or using contractions as a handle, so when I had to change mine about 10 years ago I sat typing names into hotmail (because we didn't have gmail back then) for about three hours until I found one that I both liked and wasn't taken yet. The character backstory (and surname) came along later. Being either elfin or Gaellic sounding I find it works well in a wide array of settings from fantasy to science fiction.

Some interesting tidbits:

The actual correct spelling uses an aesc (æ), but so few websites accept the full range of ASCII characters in a login so I just use 'ae' instead.
Despite not being fond of contractions, I found out recently that 'Baenlynn' IS a contraction. 'Baen' is a word for prayer (A specific kind IIRC) in Icelandic. While 'lynn' (pronounced 'lenn') is Old Norse for 'Pool'. So that makes me 'Prayer Pool'

The clan of Shaughnessy (originally, O'Shaughnessy) are believed to descend from the last pagan king of Ireland, King Daithi

When making a Char on another MMO, I was looking for something short, nondescript. Came up with Besh, dunno what made me think it.

Since its possible a few of the people I used to play with on that other game will join in on playing MWO, I decided to stick with it.

Well the story started over a year ago me and my friends were sitting down playing poker with a few beers as you do.
And we were trying to say our names backwards while laughing because it was funny I was the last to say my name backwards
And it came out as a kool Japanese sounding name " Nitsua " ( my name is Austin ) and so I thought " yeah I'll stay on this Japanese theme
And went through online finding a last name for it because Nitsua on its own is a bit boring so I came across Asuka and it fit really well.
So I decided to use it for my Xbox live account and now it's stuck. It's personal and completely made up and it includes my real name in it

10 years ago I got nostalgic for my favourite game and I started using the handle "TheMechwarrior" as an homage to the game and to just keep the dream alive...always reminding people even in my FPS games my heritage and heart was forged in the BattleTech universe of the 80's.
Death from above!

Cheers,

Mech.

SCAdians will understand mine...

Stickjock - slang term for an SCA heavy-weapons fighter... did that for over 16 years (old body don't bounce back like it used too... lol...) and have been using the name for close to 7 years now (xbox live gt as well...)
