462 matches on Alpine. I'm going to see if I can push it to an even 500 before the 19th, just because. Time to start working that map voting as much as possible.

it will be interesting to see what russ means by open ground with a series of trenches and cover in between on the new polar map... hope it ain't clutter city, i really like the openness of alpine, it was unique in that way, sad to see it go. and for the time being please keep it day only with no fog or mist please let us enjoy the new map before you ruin it with "cool" effects

When I started reading the update about the new map I was like "oh man, that's cool! It's been awhile since we've gotten an actual brand new map" Because, the last map was, IIRC, Viridian Bog, all other maps since then have been reworks.

...but then I saw that in exchange we were losing Alpine Peaks. This gave me a bit of a sad because, well, Alpine was always my favorite map. Plenty of room to move around and it invites different play styles. To me, I just found it really enjoyable as a general thing. And, admittedly, I will be very sad to see it go.

Maybe, just maybe, there may be a change of heart somewhere and Alpine Peaks will stay as part of the rotation.

Upon reading it a second time, I'm now a bit more excited, because I've been requesting some 'old school' Mechwarrior maps for some time, and we may finally get one. For those of us who played Mechwarrior 2, we may look back and fondly remember the infinite flat maps, broken up by small hills or flat plateaus. From his description, it sounds kind of like they want to create a modern version of that. A really big, flat map, with trenches and rock formations to provide cover.

I hope they restrict the amount of clutter on the ground, but it sounds to me like they have a really fun and interesting concept for the new map, and it's going to be very different from the latest maps, such as River City 2, Caustic 2 and Forest Colony 2. Alpine was the only map where you could actually have long range engagements for extended periods of time, so maybe that's something they wanted to preserve with this new map.

Somehow I fear it will be nothing more than a cold flat wasteland with tiny pebbles and shallow ditches for "cover", making it heaven for long-range fighting all day everyday. Posted Image

The map is only "unfair" if you're silly enough to fight for mt. derp.

F9 area much better area but for some reason people just like that dam mountain. Kinda like theta area on just about every map

I like it as it is, some of my best matches (in terms of excitement) has taken place there and you don't get stuck on every object.

Did they actually remove it? Sounded to me like they just added a new map for CW.

It would be a shame if they took away the only map that allowed gauss to have a fighting chance. ;)

Alpine "as is" would be a fine map to add to CW as a one drop skirmish map.

I don't think it's necessary to remove Alpine, it just needs some tweaks and then it's fine.

Seriously, the map used to be more fun with 8v8 and different spawn positions and such, but I guess Russ wants to throw out the baby with the bath water.

I hope Polar Highlands is actually good.

Don't understand PGI logic. Why remove the old map if we can have the old AND the new one? Personally, I like Alpine. It has flaws, but generally its so different from the rest of the MWO fight territories that since the very beginning it occupied its own original place... It would be sad if Alpine gone. Lets vote for more devirsity in the game. We need more maps, not less.

I'd rather they keep it, esp for conquest. But if they really feel it's unfair just lower it's chance to show up in rotation. We just don't have enough maps to cut out one like Alpine. For that matter I kinda wish they'd do the same for the other old style maps.

I like Alpine - at least you can move about and you don't get shot shortly after powering up..................

Tweeking would have been good................

Verdian Blah, Terrible Therma, I am sure that we are getting rid of Alpine Peaks to replace it with probably another even more poorly designed map. I am sure Polar Highlands will be referred by the players as Bipolar Highlands.

Maybe I'm just bitter that they are getting rid of my favorite map so that they can remove more LRM action from the game. So that they can add more brawly maps so that players don't need to think to move from point a to point b.

Alpine has some of the most diverse terrain. Sure you can run up either side of the mountain and push the other team off, but there is all this terrain. One area that is not used a lot except for chasing spiders or artic cheetahs is in the lower left corner of the map. I have used it as a fall back position for long range direct fire weapons. they have to come to you there and it is wide open. Then the high area on the right side from the middle up. Have you ever tried to flush a team out of there.

Alpine is a huge map, with many areas to fight from or options. Sure it does not have all the cover other maps do, but how many times have you had an atlas just sneak up on you from behind. There is terrain on that map that can hide the movement of an atlas, but very few people use it.

Now we have to talk about the LRMs on this map. Sure if I run a LRM boat on this map I am dodging ERLL fire, but I know that if someone is out in the open and I have 20 seconds on him he is either going to die or be corded red. Why people forget that AMS is effective when used by a group or they think ECM will save you. I do use mechs with TAG that goes out beyond 900 m, so even in a DDC I can hit it way before it can even scratch my paint. I do not care what the map is, if the team has 12 to 8 AMS they will shut LRM boats down. In CW I have seen entire units equip AMS to every mech.

Sure right now alpine gets selected almost every time it shows up, why it is a cold map. I almost never see terra therma any more. Then people like tromiline, but that is one of the hottest maps.

One thing about alpine, it is an alpine region and looks it.. If we get some thing like Borrel, then why not do another canyon network instead. All you would have to do is change the color from white to tans and brown. I have been in the Rockies, Alps and above the arctic circle. Areas of the Alps are different along with the different areas of the Rockies. You go to areas in Norway it is different from areas in Canada. What matters most is what type of rock and the weathering patterns of that rock for how the terrain will look. One thing to look at would be maps with a geographer or geologist. Look at real world maps and adapt them from there with game designers.

Do you want the Brooks range or Denali area in Alaska, The Mackenzie or Columbia mountains in Canada. Then Glacier national park, the Flat top mountain area, Sierra Nevada's, Cascade mountains. Then Patagonia in South america. Admiralty mountains in Antarctica The southern alps in New Zealand.

Do not understand pulling maps from this game as we have so few and they take so long to make new ones. But if we are going to why not pull Caustic because it is so much worse then Alpine.

This is another lose/lose maneuver that the game could have done without.

If it's flat and has minimal cover that's only going to encourage the snipers.

That's boring.

When we get Alpine now I end up hiding and waiting for the other team to get bored so we can get down to business at reasonable ranges for SRMs :) Refusing to come out and be sniped causes much QQing and rage.

Alpine Peaks was great, if you played it in conquest mode. Imo greatest conquest mode map. And normaly I hate conquest but on this map it's awesome.

Only problem with Alpine is that the middle mountain got too much cover on the top. With not only a bunch of small hills just big enough to hide behind and peek out for alpha strikes, but also two even taller mountains on each side to hide behind and scout for lurms locks where as the attacking team will have to fight an uphill battle with barely any cover available.

As many stated before; Alpine Peaks is not a bad or unfair map. There is so many possibilities on that map if not everyone would always try to fight for "Moron Mountain". PGI should flatten "Moron Mountain", relocate the conquest points and I like the idea of randomized spawn locations for the teams.
There should be an overhaul for "Assault Mode" like a real base to fight for, not a tiny square. If they would just look into the MW4 missionplay for once...there we had a good "Assault Mode". A base or dropship to be defended, but accessable from 4 different locations, turrets on the high walls that were like a warning system to the defenders from where the attack came from.
Hell, we had maps with repairbays...I still remember how intense the fights were over those locations, and how matches swung back and forth because of those mechanics...MWO could be so much more....IF PGI WOULD LISTEN TO THE FOLKS ON THE ISLAND FOR ONCE !!!
