As long as you run lasers you're okay.

It is still the same "Lol-laz0r-alpha warrior: Online / Peek-a-boo" version as before. Not much has changed. Why make brawling and exposing yourself rewarding? You know risk vs. reward decisions in their gameplay which good games try to support.

Something tells me it was the former.

The skilltree nerf is what blew it for me, I used to really like how nice and responsive mechs were, you didn't HAVE TO stand there and take punishment because you could turn or accelerate out of a bad spot before being gutted as long as YOU had some situational awareness and reacted to the situation.
Now everything feels like its stuck in mud, and reaction time is dumbed down so much that you can't even peek without getting ripped to shreds.
The balance things with armor/structure and the weapons changes, great, need more of it to get that part of the game fine tuned, and Its looking good on that end of the spectrum.
But the mobility nerfs from the skilltree are just bad, bad for gameplay, bad for TTK, bad for the "fun" factor of piloting fast mechs, or even the big ones with Max engines stacked into them.

I feel exactly the opposite. I really like the way the mechs feel now, tanky and ponderous, with mistakes being punished much more severely.

Been running a lot of ballistic builds lately and having a blast! Maybe time for a week or two off?

Oh, that explains it. I've come back from a rather long break and did notice the mechs I play the most felt a bit more sluggish but thought maybe I was just my memory being a bit off. I've definitely noticed the more then usual engagement times.
The weirdest thing I've noticed is how nobody even mentions using the cave to flank in Frozen City, or use it at all in fact whereas when I last played regularly a while back it was a very common strategy. As for the Forest Colony cave, I've run around that map in the testing grounds constantly remembering the LoTR quote " I have no memory of this place " with only a few landmarks and routes that are familiar. Was looking for the cave used for flanking on that map and either I'm always missing it or it simply doesn't exist anymore.

Last time I went to group queue and tried flanking by using the frozen city cave in my two man team the entire rest of the team had died by the time we got out save for 2 light mechs. It was pretty bad to be honest.

Clan mechs especially, with the skill tree nerf and missing a ST I feel like my FPS is dropping but its just my mech slowing down...nothing around me. Though it may be better balance, its not as fun as it was before.
I am still in favor of them just making basic mechs better and bring out tree back...grinding mechs aint worth **** anymore either. They are as good as they get once you get speed tweak anymore lol.
