So ive been playing quite a bit of my loyalty zeus recently. i have 3 tons of SRM ammo in my right torso, with CASE installed, yet i continue to die to ammo explosions. does CASE actually work or should i forgo it? never seems to work for me except on clan mechs.

CASE prevents the damage from an ammo explosion from spreading to other locations. If you have an xL engine, CASE is worthless. Standards can use CASE if they have ammo in the ST's.

well thats stupid. case blocks all damage on my clan mechs, never lose a side torso when it happens...

No, that's false.

CASE works the same for both factions.

Here's a summary:
Ammo explosion>component gone> next component protected.

Clam CASE can be mounted in arms and legs, meaning an additional level of CASE, if an ammo explosion happens there instead of the ST.

Personally, I really wish ammo explosions were more devastating, and ballistic weapons were much better. Higher risk, higher reward. And then maybe it would be worth bringing CASE, instead of just putting ammo in the legs.

Failing that, how about if mechs couldn't actually transport ammo from their legs to their arms via a series of magic tubes? :)

Ammo explosions are devastating when they happen; explosion damage isn't reduced by 60% per component.
You take the full 200 damage from Leg-ST-CT from a ton of SRM ammo.

It's just so rare, it barely matters.

Fup's suggestion was 100% frequency, but less devastating. Or something like that.

CASE works on Clan XL engines because it takes 3 crits on an engine to kill it. Clan XLs only have 2 crit slots per side torso, while IS XL engines have three. So, lose a torso in an IS mech running an XL, you die. Lose a side torso in a Clan mech utilizing a Clan XL, you slow down. This is why CASE works on Clan mechs and only performs as expected on IS mechs using a standard engine.

You should though. Unless you've already used that ammo of course. Which may be the case. (get it... case.. because.. Ok, I'll leave now. Bye)

I have come to the conclusion that ammo explosions are so rare that case is not really worth it even in a std build. But that is just my opinion.

Also, I believe ammo can be destroyed without exploding. I one time had the mg ammo in the head of my Pirates Bane destroyed by an arty strike and survived but had no ammo left.

Thats how most people feel regarding CASE.

Ammo only has a 10% chance of exploding when its destroyed.

Ammo explosions should happen 100% of the time but only do ~10% of the damage. Instead of happening 10% of the time for 100% of the damage.

Also you dont really need CASE if you put ammo in the right locations. Arms are obviously the best place to put ammo because of how damage transfer works.

But if you cant put ammo in your arms, you can place ammo in locations where it gets used up first. The game will draw ammo from locations in the following order:

HD > CT > RT > LT > LA > RA > LL > RL

It's true in most cases ( yes yes :) ) more so if the torso is crit padded with DHS or other equipment, but in my 3LPL 4 LRM5 crab , one side torso and leg are full of ammo and almost every time that torso goes I can hear it cooking off X) , so yes I have a case there and I survive it's destruction ever time even with that crackling noise :) .

the case does stop ammo explosions propagating to adjacent locations.

yup, can have an ammo explosion in a side torso and it won't ALWAYS cause the whole torso to go boom.

exactly as stated, if you lose your whole side torso ( what ever the cause ), you'll slow down rather than go boom like IS mechs.

You can see it work.

Case reminds me of a scatter-shield on a race car. Your transmission still goes boom but you get to keep your kneecaps. :P

I do wish case cut a percentage of dmg to the section it's installed it. Might make it more worthwhile.

omg, if they did this, could you imagine the armor tanks ???

it would be worth it just to see if Paul stokes out.

The risk used to be quite high but as the PPC+ Gauss poptart meta took off it was reduced. Now with ballistics being out of favor further nerfing them isn't worth it IMO.

CASE is far more useful in clan mechs than in IS mechs. I don't have a single day that goes by without an ammo explosion somewhere on my SplatFox, but I'm thankful that the explosion is always localised. Usually it's an arm or leg explosion, but since the damage doesn't transfer across components, losing a leg or an arm is nowhere near as bad as losing a ST in addition to said arm or leg.

....That being said, I still managed to get an ammo explosion (AMS ammunition) stored in the head. No amount of CASE is going to save that one :/

Then again, Clan CASE is weightless, compared to IS CASE which is half a ton for minimal effect. If the enemy has smashed your ST in that badly, chances are you are almost dead on CT anyway and would go down fast even if the ammo doesn't go boom. You might as well spend that extra 0.5 tons on half a ton more ammo, or reduce some armor elsewhere in addition to that to fit in another ton of stuff.

It does work.

It's just not very good because ammo explosions are practically always irrelevant.
