Summoner's much maligned. Certainly it's nowhere near as good as the Timber Wolf but it can take some useful builds.

Prime LA 1xLBX20, D Torsos 2xMG, D RA 1xERLL, 1xERML.

Lasers give you some DPS at range. The LBX let's you destroy destroy components at close-mid range. The MGs are a nice bonus for up close.

The stock B and D seem like pretty good builds. The Primary I want put another ton of LB10X ammo on, but do not have a way to make room that I like.

A solid build I have been using maxes out armor (you really do need it) and carries 4 er medium lasers, 1 UAC 20 and 1 SRM 4 with as much ammo as you can fit (more UAC, less SRM).

The key is maxing out the armor, you basically cant take hits otherwise.

This has largely been my experience. Your weapons suffer a little bit with the loss in pod weight, but by turning on survivability mode, you get the opportunity to do some fairly impressive/effective damage.

SRMMONER PRIME

Probably the best thing to try after the SRM fixes.

I wouldn't recommend adding armor, it's coverage is decent for a heavy mech. Also, most variants of the Summoner are heavily ammo dependant, and ballistics tend to be heavy, even with clan improvements. With the prime, it's better to swap out the ERPPC for an ER lg laser, then use the two tons saved towards more ammo. You could also build the C variant, which is an effective brawler, though you will want to drop the ER small laser, meaning you save money on buying a D right arm, also swap the Streak 6 pack for a faster firing (and lighter) SRM 6, then use the tonnage for UAC 20 ammo. The D is pretty effective as is, though you could swap out for a B L.torso, and replace the MGs for an SRM pack, while retaining at least one or both AMS, depending on what size launcher you want.

As for fighting in one, staying at med to long range tends to work well, If you do favor brawling, you need to know how to spread damage. You should also be jumping when possible to throw off your opponent's aim.

This is fun:

Just a jumping ERPPC and LB20X. Use poptart tactics; shoot n twist. The LB20X is super fun.

This is by far my fav build so far. Decent damage at all ranges, a great fire support mech, with a lil brawling ability

I am having trouble coming up with a good build for the Summoner, but it seems like there have been several builds posted here that are worth trying. This is currently what I am trying to run, mainly because I this is my favorite mech from lore and I don't want to change it up to much. I basically just stay at range using LRM and pop-tart with the ERPPC. By the time the brawl starts I am out of LRM ammo and I just UAC5 and ERPPC as much as I can. Heat can be a bit of an issue with the build but it is serviceable.

I do wish I could drop a couple of those jump jets until there is a noticeably difference between having 2 or 3 and 5. That extra couple tons would be huge.

I have also tried this, which for me is a lot easier to play.

Does anyone know if it will be possible to change the upgrades in the future? For example add Endo to a mech? My guess is no since it would create a pretty good power imbalance between Clan and IS.

I've been using a -B with 2x LRM20 (5t ammo), 2x SRM4 (1t ammo), 1x AMS (1t ammo), and 1x Active Probe.

I'm looking into dropping the LRM-20's down to LRM-15's and either converting the SRM's to Streak's or adding ammo (or both).

I have run out of ammo before, but that was in a match with 2 kills, 5 assists, and 700 damage.

Think of the Summoner-B as a CPLT-A1.

-----
I've had some success with 2xUAC-5, 4xMLaser on a Summoner-D (I do not recall if it has AMS or a probe). I'm a lousy brawler, but it plays like a CPLT-K2.

In a past life, I was a Catapult driver for the Lyran Commonwealth...

I'm finding the stock Summoner Prime to be a ton of fun. I do find the ammo to be light on the LB10-X. This 'mech is so fast and agile I just keep moving and if I'm stopped, I make sure I have a bunch of team mates around. It feels like the clans coming into play has changed the tactics everyone is employing and the Summoner seems more survivable than I thought it would be. I haven't even played my favorite the Timber Wolf yet on the live server since I'm enjoying the Summoner so much.

On an unrelated note I really hope the Hellbringer, Mad Dog, and Fire moth are brought into the game soon. Some of my favorite 'mechs of all time.

Here is one of the better builds that I have run acrossed using, It runs really hot Like most Clan mechs but as long as you engage only your PPC's at range and then chain fire your PPC's with your SRM and SML Laser in close its really not that bad.

I've been using this build fairly effectively. The UAC5s carry the build for me, I find them to be just too good to pass up. but never forget about the effectiveness of lasers.

Also with AMS and ERsml instead. More heat effecient and surviable.

It will be months before new clan mechs are introduced i don't expect any new clan content until November December Timeframe with the focus of CW up and coming.

Man I want a Summoner! I'd probably run it like this in an attempt to get the heat efficiency high and DPS high.
SMN-PRIME -LRM mode
or this
SMN-PRIME -UAC5

That's like a 70 ton FS9-H. I'd ditch the AMS, though.

Did this last night with 3xSRM6, 2xSRM4 (no artimis) and a UAC2 for shaking their heads around. Very, very effective if you can wait for the brawl and some mech's armor to be shredded.

Yeah I figured as much. I'll be happy as long as they make it in at some point. I don't like lights that much but I found the Fire Moth to be a lot of fun. Maybe they'll offer up another pack soon for early purchase.

I'm still interested to see what comes in on the IS front. Hoping for the Zeus and Hatamoto-Chi eventually.

Prime Variant: Had a lot of success with this build. A run and gun model. Snipe, corner peaking firing, and lrm assist to chew up targets for the brawlers. AC and PPC get -10% recharge time from prime arms. Mech is heat efficient.

SMN-PRIME

B- Variant: 2 LRM 15 launchers and Prime right are ERPPC with -10% recharge time. Allows me to use left side as shield once ammo gone. I just don't like all missiles builds. Can snipe with PPC to whittle CT's at range and take down ECM to get strikes in.

SMN-B

D- Variant: Super solid stock setup with slight modification and make armor. This this is nearly impossible to over heat on cold maps. 4 ER lasers give you the ability to hit and run the big Alpha U-AC hitters. My favorite mech of 15 I purchased. I tried a U-AC20 4 ER ML build and found it gets chewed up to fast trying to get close enough to alpha. Was effective at stripping already damaged torso's, but even with max armor, DWF and WHK chew you up and spit you out if you come up CT to CT.

SMN-D
