Even in all its glory it still can't compare to the tabletop though.

Not to mention it was the first game (that I'm aware of) where you got to play the part of an Inner Sphere unit that was one of the first to encounter the Clans. Those first few times you run into unknown enemies with more armor, more weaponry, more speed, and better cooling... It was pretty intimidating.

I also really liked the MechCommander series, and MekTek is fun. I never had the chance to play actually tabletop BattleTech, though I had a few minatures... but in hindsight I don't think I'd have had the patience for it. The CCG was fun, though!

In the broader sense, the Battletech (i.e. board game) wins.

Now, the graphics were barely playable and all sounds were PC speaker, but let me give you a run down:
(1). Mechwarrior I had randomly generated levels.
(2). Mechwarrior I had randomly generated missions, ranging from Garrison Duty which might give you insta-cash if the game decided no enemies would attack you that mission, or Planetary Defense where the "estimated enemy strength" might be completely wrong and your entire team gets blown apart by a vastly superior force. There were also extended campaigns involving several missions, where only part of the damage of the previous mission was fixed.
(3). Visible damage. Shoot the warhammer in the head a bunch, and the head disappears and smoke pours out the hole. Neato.
(4). If your mech is legged or disabled, you can still use the command screen to order your lancemates around to new positions and tell them who to attack. Even if your mech gets wrecked, you are still in command.
(5). There was a storyline you could try to follow and beat the game, but you didn't have to. You could just go from planet to planet accepting merc contracts til you had zillions of C-Bills and the best mechs in the game.
If MW1 was remade today, with exactly the same game dynamics, but with modern graphics, properly done randomly generated maps, a good portion of the 3025 TRO mechs, etc, it would be king of all mechwarrior games I think. Except MWO of course ;D.

Best PC game - First-Person: Mechwarrior
Best PC game - Third-Person: MechCommander
Best Console game - Still to be determined (sorry folks MechAssault was complete poop)
Best Console mech game - Steel Batallion (did I mention MechAssault was complete poop yet?)
Honorable Mention: BattleTech: The Crescent Hawk's Inception (the first PC Battletech game ever made and made by Westwood Studios whom went on to create the Command and Conquer franchise)

Never did get a try at the pod simulators though either.
Mechcommander was my favorite version of the computer btech. Had a real hard time with MW3 and 4, thought leggin was so cheap, likely cause I played the real btech first.
