The way matches are built is strictly a first-come-first-serve basis. Period.
Also, because of the fact that it is easier to organize an Attack as a 12-man force and the fact that Units, as a general thing, prefer to attack because they can get into matches faster *AND* often organize themselves into 12-man groups means that if you Defend, you will most likely face off against a 12-man team.
Don't want to face off against a 12-man team? Go on the attack. Alternatively, form your *own* 12-man team by using the LFG feature.
If neither of those work for you, then maybe you should consider joining a unit...
....and if that doesn't work, well, maybe you should just avoid CW altogether until after March or April when the queues are split such that Solos (players not in a Unit) won't have to play against Units.

OP did you read the big box of text that pops up when you click on the Faction tab?
Did you skip past the part that warns you that there is no matchmaker consideration beyond getting two groups of twelve players together and letting them fight?
and yet another "it's because of trial 'mechs" comment; FYI I have experimented 3 times now with an Inner Sphere Trial only deck, all around the 1500 damage and 6-10 kills range. There is nothing wrong with the 'mechs, it is the pilots that have the issue.
I do agree (and you would be hard pushed to find any experienced CW player that disagrees) that CW should be gated in some form but restricting the type of mech is not the solution. Especially since the (C) variants were designed by the Competitive community and voted for by the rest of us; so if they were garbage it would be our own fault and I would be some sort of Living Legend to be able to get that score (which I'm not).
As for splitting the queues; it ain't going to help. Players like myself are untagged and therefore eligible to drop in the supposed kiddie pool of untagged players, did I mention that I've done somewhere in the region of 1000-1100 CW drops? How are those CW newbies going to fair against a random team with perhaps 4 or 5 players like me on the other side?
The only way to balance the matchmaking in CW is to incorporate the entire playerbase into CW and this would allow PGI to add the skillbased MM system. How the Quick play maps and modes would affect the CW map could be discussed (and have been in the past) but that is a different technical question.
Until the population playing CW is large enough (I believe Russ Bullock stated a 10 fold increase), the "MatchMaker" will simply be there to start matches with no consideration for players hurt feelings from getting stomped by other players willing to put some effort into grouping up and using teamwork.
Ya know, the way that little panel of text warns you about.
So I'll put this in big letters, so it can't be missed:
IF YOU CHOOSE TO PLAY FACTION WARFARE (CW) AS A SOLO PLAYER, BE PREPARED TO PLAY AGAINST PREMADE GROUPS WITH OPTIMIZED MECHS AND DROP DECKS. IT WILL BE HARD AND FAST BUT IF YOU ARE PREPARED IT CAN BE REWARDING AND FUN. DO NOT EXPECT AN EASY GAME.

and you missed the part where I'm not in a UNIT, yet I accept what is in front of me and CHOOSE to play it. I CHOOSE to drop in a mode which will most likely pit me against large premade groups, while playing as a solo myself. I CHOOSE to do things the hard way....... because I accept that is the system in place due to the restrictions binding the programmers.
So you can choose to do what you will but I will choose to point out the futility of your OP.
P.S. I'm Scottish, so I'm used to doing things the hard way.

First of all, what you are saying is either...
A: an outright lie
Or
B: staggeringly bad luck.
I'm going with A here. Secondly very soon you will have your special snowflake queue in the forum of a solo only mode for faction warfare. There you will be curbstomped without mercy by all the players better than you. You will also get uber rekt by any team that uses in games VoIP where you won't.
Big question is, what will your excuse be then?
