I won't disagree with you on this, but following that logic it would mean every mech that don't have an AC20 in the ST should mount an XL engine because it would be more efficient? (in exaggerated words)
I played my Orions IIC lately and maybe it is because their brawly nature but I loose either my big gun or the srms. Both can still hurt pretty bad so I still think it is a pretty good advantage to not die on ST loss. Overrated maybe, but still an advantage.
TBH, with the exception of about 2 mechs, they should. Stalkers and King Crabs have the same vulnerability to instantly losing sides from mechs they couldnt see, and since they can run enough weapons per side to still function with 1/2 left ok (no speed loss or heat efficiency loss, and IS weapons run cooler) - 2 LPLs on a STK isnt bad, neither is 2xUAC5 on the KGC. Other than that though? Yes, XLs on everything.
Especially leaderboard tourneys, since those are only about the very best games, XL in literally everything assuming ST slots allow**. If you lose an ST early in a STD engine mech, you arent getting 1000dmg 3 solo kills anyway, so its actually better to be dead and moving on to the next match
**Except Stalkers, NEVER put an XL in a Stalker, they can't make use of them due to the engine cap, it can fit a max size STD anyway and an XL just costs you heatsink space.
