Classic, with DHS and upgraded engine ... the 8Q is the quintessential Awesome, and this is a very traditional load-out, just optimized a bit.

ERPPC AWS-9M
(good for newbs, no minimum range, one weapon group, etc.)

3 ERPPCs
XL engine
As many DHS as it can fit (I'll post a Smurfy when I get home)

AWS-8Q 3 diffrent weapon groups, can be little hard for new players
AWS-8R lrm+xl=not good choice, but have really nice quirks
AWS-8V well brawling on awesome, why not? only problem with hitboxes
AWS-8T can be work, but lrms...
AWS-9M well, IMHO best build for new players-good speed (67.8 w/o speed tweak), only 2 weapon group, std engine, a lot of DHS.
Aws-9M-2 my lovely build for this mech, fast, have long range weapons with pinpoint alpha and weapons for mid/close range.

For my opinion best variant its 9m with std(awesome+std best friendly combination for new), only 2 weapon groups (erppc+mlas, not need afraid about ghost heat), good speed and survivability.

The AWS-8T has the best generic energy quirks in the game. Quad LPL, lots of HS, STD engine.

AWS-9M

Yes, I know the AWS-9M no longer has the best quirks, but those change and the 9M has the strongest combination of hardpoints and engine cap.

Otherwise:
AWS-9M
Or
AWS-8Q
