Ah, look at you, all trying to sound smart and special. Emphasis on trying.

Someone must have been given a shiny new dictionary for their birthday, and feeling like all kinds of a special princess, eh?

You know the word "gay" actually means "happy, carefree" and "shambles", a meat market, whilst "******" means a bundle of sticks. I wonder why nobody reacts to those terms in "their intended" definitions?

Crazy, right?

Oh, but linguistic evolution and contextual use changes things, you say? Yes, indeed it does. Even when one says "meta".

Connotation is for scrubs, Bishop. Shut up.

I have to say, I find that the people arguing against contextual terminology being clanners absolutely hilarious given how clan society worked in the lore.

People like you guys are the reason irregardless is now in the dictionary. Call me pedantic, but words have definitions for a reason! Unless OP is referring to "meta" the philosophical term. In which case, he's off base too... But still right that it's the wrong word.

In any case, here's a little on "meta": It comes from TT roleplaying games and the phrase "meta-gaming", which pertains to roleplay. When you Meta-game in an RPG, it means your character is using information that would not have access to, but their player does. It's stupid to use the term "meta" in a game that is, for all intents and purposes, an arena shooter. There's no roleplaying, THERE IS NO META-GAME. And even if it were a roleplay scenario, are you telling me a Mechwarrior wouldn't have access to information on system specs and efficiency?

The term we SHOULD be using is min/max, because that is what is actually happening.

Buddy, I was sympathetic to your plight in the first thread, but this thread right here? This is obnoxious. Don't do this. You look silly.

We use all kinds of information a Mechwarrior shouldn't have access to.

It's because having to spell out "the best weapons/builds/mechs/tactics/etc." every single time gets repetitive and time-consuming. Meta makes it so much simpler.

Give me a better word to use for the same meaning and I'll be happy to use that one instead.

Min/Max: The practice of playing a video game with the intent of creating the "best" character by means of minimizing undesired or unimportant traits and maximizing desired ones.

Honestly I'm surprised so many people here haven't heard these terms before. They're not exactly uncommon. Although meta is used incorrectly in a lot of gaming communities, MWO is the only one I've seen it used to describe builds of any kind.

MMO's seem to have dropped Min-Max in favor of "FOTM", which should really only apply to games that significantly change the balance on a semi-regular basis.

Or we can say "meta" because we all understand what the term is referring to.This is not attic greek. It's a living language and we're working with a unique topic as it applies to MW:O. We can create or modify terms in this context it's what we have a language for.

Min/Max has more syllables.
Therefore calorie inefficient.
I can say Meta twice for every one time I say Min/Max before I overheat. (Using double heat sinks)

Min/Max.

The practice of playing a video game with the intent of creating the "best" character by means of minimizing undesired or unimportant traits and maximizing desired ones. This is usually accomplished by improving one specific trait or ability by sacrificing ability in all other fields. This is easier to accomplish in games where attributes are generated from a certain number of points rather than in ones where they are randomly generated.

That sounds weird in certain sentences.

E.g. "The meta min/max of the game is focused on laser vomit right now, with a side dish of SRMs sometimes."

"Min/max" isn't as versatile of an expression as "meta." Substitute insufficient.

The Meta Game:
"the game universe outside of the game itself."

Sounds like the Mechlab to me, where the Min-Maxing can take place.
Shorten that to Meta, and throw it where you will.

It fits fine. It's literally perfect.

Well, hey, at the end of the day, I don't care what word you use. But the kid was right in his OP, even if he was a **** about it. Well, except for the part where he accused people of "trying to sound smart". I've used Meta on these forums within the context its accepted because it's easier than trying to shoehorn "min/max" into an already well established community.

It's especially outside/external when we're using Smurfys to do it...

Why bother playing a build you enjoy when you can play something boring that doubles your match score? Unless for some reason the match score is the thing that is fun to you of course....

I could care less what my match score is, but I do care about winning.

Contrary to the odd philosophy found on these forums, I don't play PvP games for, "immersion." I play them to beat other players.
