Thinly related post but...
If you think the use of 'meta' is bad how about the emoticon they put in the Oxford dictionary? I believe it was the 'crying tears of joy' emoticon. I was in a fury for days by definition a emoticon is not a word. It's a symbol or pictogram. I'm for the advancement of language and all but I don't think you move forward by trashing definitions. The least they could have done is complied all emoticons into their own dictionary equivalent, or named it the emoticon of the year.
Still gotta love the english language endless debate opportunities.

I suppose I'm just not sure how this is so hard of a concept to grasp. Meta is a Greek word meaning "beyond, or after", so in our case what comes after the base narrative of the game (which is get mechs, equip them, and play games), the natural thing after this is competitive nature. "Pokemon syndrome" wanting to be the best in every match, how does one achieve this? Trying many different mechs for all the possible scenarios and settling on something that gives high results with lowest effort (currently laser builds). This is what the term "meta" stands for in this case, the game "beyond" the game if you will. The word use is fine, you may not want to use an "abstract" term in a video game, but how would you go about dumbing it down for the masses?
Do you guys plan on posting on the forums of the NFL, MLB, UFC, NBA, and other professional sports organizations, and telling them to stop saying meta also? I'm genuinely curious at this point. Also, for the record the term has been being used in similar function since before all of us were even born (early 1900s), saying it's some "new" term "the kids made up", is just silly.

Metagaming is working the game with information from outside of the game. The "game" in this case is each instance of a match. Knowing what people are likely using allows you to build mechs that counter that. The most commonly used and most powerful mechs are name "the Meta".
This terminology is used in many games, including card games like Magic The Gathering where "The Meta" refers to top performing decks / cards that you expect to face.
It's a well defined phrase in this context and is understood by nearly everyone. Words and language change, get over it. We've already been over this at least 3 or 4 times over the history of the forums, and the "stick to the dictionary" guy never ever won.

Meta - The builds you see played badly by inexperienced players before they are a smoldering wreck because they thought meta was always better than a stock weapon build

There aren't many stock weapon loadouts that I can think of that are very good. Not off the top of my head at least.

I use the term "meta" to describe how people have gone above and beyond the spirit of Battletech and Mechwarrior. It's the nature of the beast. Someday we'll get stock mode.

Most are fine.... When played against other stock or near stock loads.
Against min-max, it's tougher, but many of us accept the challenge of running "Improved Stock", that maintains the flavor of the Mech, while improving ammo, armor, heatsinks. Fit instance, my MAD-3R packs the PPC/Mlaser combo in each arm, but I upgraded the AC5 to a UAC, added Endo, maxxed Armor, switched to DHS.
Not true stock, but an effective approximation, that retains the character of the Mech, while acknowledging the FPS shooter realities.
Much more fun (IMO) than your typical Vanilla Generic MetaMech run by your average munchkin.
