How hard is it to actually make sound mods for this game? Are there tutorials out? Ive always had a big stiffy for making awesome sounding weapons, and i have quite a few .wav files from...pretty much ALL the mechwarrior games including living legends (and those xbox versions nobody talks about yet all you rat ******** have played...dont judge me, they had the best sounding gauss rifles...LOL!) lying around my computer.

I ask this because I actually use the MW2 sound mod but Ive seen quite a few cropping up lately...including the "PEW" mod...(comedy) so was wondering how hard was it to actually make yourself.

I'd be careful with modding the files of the game.
Knowing that you actually use the mod, I sincerely hope I don't see your name on the ban list. Because I'd be really glad to do-away with a lot of the sounds MWO uses. Bitchin Betty is -way- too muddy sounding, and she'd be the first to see a complete removal of her lower end tones, and a faint echo added.
I edited betty's voice in audacity just to see how easy it would be to get it to MW2 as close as possible... It's very easy, and sounds really good.

Its JUST sound mods hell ive got videos recorded of me playing. It offers no unfair advantage and is LITERALLY what got me back playing again...hell if anything they better go and thank Shivaxi for selling them :

An Ebon Jaguar La carte

A Mauler a La Carte.

Marauder with hero addon

Warhammer with hero addon

And tomorrow a Kodiak....If it where not for that single sound mod I probably wouldnt have bothered playing again/enjoying myself and they would be out of quite a bit of money....

I'd like to think that too. But what it comes down to is that you're editing game files and that's a grey area in itself. Isn't it also in our agreement right at the top that we're prohibited from doing so? I'd rather not lol even though i'm assured it should be fiiiiiiiine, i'm still skeptical.

But don't get me wrong, I would -love- to try them out.
The only thing that would get me to do it is if PGI sent me a written letter, or if PGI did an official statement on it.

The sound mods I use dont actually edit any files in the game but simply add 3 or 4 files to it....nothing that is originally in there is edited or changed anway, and removing the mod is as simple as deleting the additional files. I'm pretty sure that 100% clears the rules.

Wonder if there will be a MW4 sound mod. Would install that in a heartbeat. (mmmmh, sexy PPC sounds...)

From my experience with other games and making sound mods the only digging around you need to do is to figure out how the file structure in the game works and how it "reads" its sound files. Depending on how the game is structured you are more or less getting it to read your sounds first before it runs to the default sounds in the core of the game. you don't TECHNICALLY modify the game files. You are simply adding in some awesome to what is already there.

If I figured out how to do that that would be my first stop.

If PGI bans people for running sound mods, I'd be less concerned about the ban list, and more concerned about the player base taking a significant hit in population, in addition to the ensuing drama that would result.

Especially since Russ basically gave the a-okay here:

Honestly if they banned those mods right now I'd pretty much stop playing again....

SERIOUSLY I purchased all those packs thanks to a sound mod...they better be kissing Shivaxi's feet....he got me back to playing this.

Yes, but Russ is not the person banning people. Russ is the first person you can contact AFTER you get banned... so i would not take that post as a a-okay green light.

I don't see that as "You're fine if you alter game files" lol. It see it more as "i didn't say you couldn't do it."

For some people it's not going to be an issue - for others they will mod and gain an advantage.

If they'd come out and definitively say we could mod the files and someone wanted to show me how to pull them, I would re-eq all their shat so it didn't sound like saturated mud pies designed by someone that has no clue why brick wall limiters and audio filters were invented. Then I'd upload them somewhere for everyone else and PGI to use. I offered to fix them for free in closed beta - they told me they wouldn't process any application that wouldn't relocate to Canadia.

Not sure what point you are making linking that. If you are trying to show that sound mods are o.k., all that post says is that Russ didn't ban a specific person when asked. It does not provide a blessing from PGI. In fact, I have never heard they were alright, in which case they are against the Code of Conduct if any of the following apply:

HACKING / CHEATING / EXPLOITING

The following actions are strictly forbidden:

• Modifying any game client files aside from those expressly listed below:

- User.cfg
- Game.cfg
- Attributes.xml
- Actionmaps.xml
- Profile.xml
- Weapongroups.xml
- Changing default save/profile/install locations

‘Injecting’ third-party files that may not directly modify game files.

Also,

Displaying or discussing the results of altering or tampering with game client files.

We really need a dev to speak on this then.

I understand they grey area here. and I dont want this community divided by unsavory modifications if they OK something like this...

I DO love little small immersion mods like this that completely change the environment I play in...for the better. I have lost nearly every dam game Ive played today, but simply because i can hear my super awesome gauss rifle fire sounds I dont even mind...Sometimes I play just to pull the trigger....I make Cbills, I keep playing, they keep making money...

I just wish we had more beefy sounds for Autocannos, MGs, Gauss, PPCs, Explosions...
Blasts... Huge sound shockwaves after firing AC20 single shots (like the ones you get from a tank firing its main gun)

Example: A Mech sized MG should sound like this:

If they try to ban sound mods, they'll have to pry the MW3 sound pack from my cold, dead hand actuators.
