OOC: Was just carrying out the plan I hinted at earlier, and Draco is not going to be doing anymore major ops, but he figured he would try to buy time, till we could get the rest of the mechs back, and where in sam hell is Brendan, as we need his mech bays.

“There was a raid. Civilians were being evacuated. We were trying to hold them off and buy time. A stray PPC shot hits one of the trucks holding evacuees. All of them killed in an instant. But we just kept on fighting.”
Furukawa knew of the Combine raids into the Federated Commonwealth. He said nothing.
“Didn’t learn that my family was on that truck until about a week later.”
What?
Furukawa felt a sickening feeling in his stomach. In fact, he didn’t just know of the raids; he had participated in one of them.
“My wife. My two sons. Gone. Just like that. I couldn’t even give them a proper burial. There was nothing left.”
I’m sorry…
Furukawa felt the words hang in his throat, but didn’t—couldn’t—open his mouth.
Paisley’s grip tightened.
“Can you believe it? A stray shot. That’s all it took.”
Still stunned into silence, Furukawa said nothing.
The grip loosened slightly as Paisley took a deep breath.
“Do you have any family, Furukawa?”
Furukawa thought of his grandmother, long since deceased. He thought of his own parents, more recently deceased. He shook his head.
“I see…”
Paisley released Furukawa and turned away.
Furukawa looked to the Jenner. The smiling sun looked back at him from its nose.
In the time they had their private discussion, the three children they had initially found rendezvoused with the rest of the group. They all gathered a short distance from the ‘mech, talking amongst themselves.
He waited another minute, and then turned back to Paisley.
“I have a proposition.”

“So you’re suggesting that you use your Jenner as bait while we take the kids back to base?”
“Yes.”
Paisley pinched his fingers between his eyes in thought.

Furukawa started again.
“By leading the soldiers away from your path of retreat—”
“I know. I know. Just give me a second.”
Memories of his family still racked his mind, so Paisley took a few minutes to ponder Furukawa’s plan.
“And how do I know that I can trust you with piloting the thing?”
“Well, if anyone else tries to, the security protocols—”
“That’s not what I meant.”
Furukawa looked down, and then looked back up again.
“I cannot give you anything more than my word. I am branded as a traitor by the DCMS. I have no family and no home to return to. I refuse to allow any harm to come to these children.”
He nodded to the Jenner.
“…and Hana is missing an arm, out of missile ammo, and has not seen maintenance for weeks.”
He’s serious…
Paisley paused for a moment.
“So what you’re suggesting is suicide.”
Furukawa's answer was devoid of hesitation or remorse.
“If it comes to that, yes.”
