Heck, 90% of Mechs even in the House Armies weren't even upgrades. Prince Victor, Hohiro, Kai, and their entourage all drove 3025 tech mechs until after Outreach. When the future of the Realm doesn't have a high tech mech, pretty much nobody did.
But man with all the retcons, Upgrades, etc, you'd think half the mechs in the war of 3039 were full blown level 2 Star League Mechs... yet even most of the ones that Kurita got from Comstar were stipped to level 1 tech.
Yup, yet we aren't really playing in that universe are we? I mean if I can slap endo on a mech lickety split then why the hell not have rare royal versions everyone can have or all the Helm stuff all over?
I've often wondered how different this game would've been had we as players not been able to completely alter our mechs as much and what it would've done to the balance overall.

Yeah.
Don't remind me. I remember just how beautiful R&R was for all but the EZMode Tryhards. Same ones who cried against Sized Hardpoints, Proper Aiming Mechanics, etc.
But even with the bugs, gosh was CB a beautiful thing when you had to weigh the risk/reward of running an XL, or spraying and praying with aLRMs... and even if you win the match, you ended up broke. But if you were smart and selective, you could roll in the riches.
Ah well. The masses QQ'd long enough. We have our MechAssault: Online. It's not the game any of us wanted, but maybe it was the game we deserved?

But I DO really want to see a stock mech mode.
both have their pros and cons. I enjoy designing and building mechs. That said by your own word, you enjoy the mechlab MORE than the actual game. That speaks somewhat more to the state of the game than an unbridled love of Mechlabs (after all you could spend all day on Smurfy, Remlab, Mech Factory, etc, instead).
And that's what I'm referring to. When it comes time to saddle up, I find the speed, tempo, pacing and overall feel of lvl 1 tech Stock Mode far more interesting and exciting than playing MinMax Tryhard mode.
Sure, I like tweaking and building mechs. And if this game wasn't forever mired in such pronounced have vs have nots in the Meta, it would translate more into the actual gameplay.
You know what's crazy? For all it's bad artwork, I really had fun with MWTactics, because I could play in the Mech Lab,and yet not feel as trapped by Meta. It's one reason I long for HBS's upcoming game.

But back on topic to the thread: It really is a conundrum for me. I LIVE to play in the mechlab and try to create the "perfect" loadout on a mech. And yet, I desperately long to be restrained by hardpoint size and quantity limitations.
So many threads on this, soooooo log ago.
I accept my Stock account and my Unlimited account. Never the two shall meet.

On a more serious note, the MWO head design seems to be the in-between the narrow, slit visored design of some of the minis and the, as you call it, Sputnik head of the original TRO design.
I personally do like it the way it is.
