But it's nice to see competitive players admit that the click a pixel, no hindrance, no immersion arcade shooter aiming they demand for MWO is not terribly skill dependant. Kudos, that.

I hate to tell you that comp play is a little more than just aiming. There's a lot more decision making involved (the thinking man's part that is nearly non-existent in pub play or CW).

The actual MATCH is hardly the thinking part, its the setup, drop decks, ranges, play styles, coordination and trying to stay a step ahead of your competitors that makes this game stand out from others IMO.

I dont just bring my beast build and do my thing like other games. We plan, plot, practice and then plan some more often the whole week before the match. This is where the THINKING part comes in if you ask me.

Once the match starts its just killing mechs, but PGI is to blame for that if you ask me. They could just make changes and say Deal with it or bail like other games do.

Skill is hard to measure between disciplines.

Are there more dedicated e-sports teams in other games? Almost certainly.

Do those games require less skill? Hard to measure. One thing that is great about MWO is that it's a very complex game. It's like asking if chess requires more skill than checkers. Most shooters are about map management and the best spawns and good twitch skills.

MWO has a **** ton more math and strategy. It would be foolish to assume that a smaller population and associated balance issues in MWO are directly relevant to the skill scope involved. Anyone in e-sports would tell you that every game has balance issues, that's what drives strategy. Leveraging strengths vs weaknesses.

The greater learning curve and mechanics are part of what keeps a big population segment out - it's harder than CoD.

Half that money should be put into a lottery that any player can enter. Make the leets make do with $50,000.

Anyone care to take bets that in the final each side will have at least 1 Arctic Cheetah, if not 2.

Naa, we dont need participation trophies in this one.

Everyone is the best, what company in their right mind would say "The most mediocre"?

When a place claims they have the BEST slice of pizza in town, do you take their word for it? Or go inside and ask to see the results from the latest nationwide pizza slice contest?

Its advertising, plain and simple. Same thing as a headline on the news papers, its often over sensationalized.

They could have gone with another term to at least be in the realm of believability.

How about "most intense tournament of the year" or something instead? Saying "the highest skill tournament in esports" is just dumb.

Well I thought about signing up even though I'm not in a unit and then thought screw it the finals in America Posted Image

Do you tell the guy at the farmer's market that the corn he is selling isn't the sweetest corn there is as well?

This is a weak argument, because a good advertiser would know which characteristic to draw attention to.

If you're selling a Toyota Prius, you wouldn't advertise it as the fastest car in the world.
If you're selling tickets to a world ultimate frisbee tournament, you wouldn't call it the biggest sporting event in the world
If you were advertising the first 50 Shades of Grey movie, you probably wouldn't call it the most critically acclaimed movie ever made.

Even "thinking man's shooter" is a huge stretch at this point, as this game can pretty much be played with WASD and Mouse 1, 99% of the time. You press R now and then, maybe use some consumables. That's about it. Not exactly a flight simulator, is it?

I reserve the right to have an opinion also though do i not? Feel free to come play me if you wanna show me what its like or something. we practice internally every week with our A team (Night Scorn 1) but i will make sure i let them know you dont think very highly of them.

Oh i agree, its over exaggerate and sensationalized but lots of news is sold on this idea alone. Make the headline grab them and they will stick around for the trash that follows.

Id agree a more appropriate title is warranted i really dont think this game is the Highest skilled game in the land, despite what Arivio may think. Posted Image

Arctic cheetos while a good mech arent seeing too much use at the top end, youll see them occasionaly as you will firestarters but thanks to the exceptional Oxide and one hit wonder Jenner IIc, cheetos have seen their time out sigbificantly reduced

Well, no matter how you cut it, I think MWO comes up short. If you define "highest skill tournament" as the one that has the highest level of competition (i.e. most people playing, hardest working top players, smallest chance for a given new player to make it to the top, etc) then MWO is nowhere close. If you define "highest skill tournament" simply by how long it takes to understand the basic rules of the game (the equivalent of knowing how the pieces move in chess), then MWO is still nowhere close to being the "highest skill tournament" in esports, I would imagine.

It just sounds like a cheap and transparent way to make headlines and grab attention. It's like if a waterjet tournament was described as the most dangerous sport in the world, it would sound dumb, it would just sound like an attempt to be sensational and draw eyeballs. It wouldnt actually have any positive effect.

It's not a big deal, obviously. But marketing has never been PGI's biggest strength, in my opinion.

Why, you think other genres with actual successful eSports don't fit into the comparison of "Highest skilled eSport."?

The problem is that it comes across as pretentious, stupid, and not even worth believing for a second that it could be true, and without any real perspective (i.e watching a tournament of a game you don't know much about) the conclusion would most likely be that the game is bad and the developers are really desperate for viewership (which isn't necessarily untrue I guess).

This game has had literally no substantial competitive scene and suddenly the first actual tournament ever is deserving of the title "highest skilled...in esports"? Give me a ****ing break.

Honestly it probably doesn't even matter, but such a dumb & inappropriate title will only hurt, not help.
