You're right. PGI should just put their keyboards down and unplug the servers. You can go play the other Mechwarrior games existing in the market right now.

Anyways, back in reality where people actually want this game to be better,

Cockpit glass effects are an excellent immersion tool that is turned-off only by people who actively try to avoid immersion.

Do you really want to go there? Its sad because I was not saying your original idea is bad (the whole Pilot immersion).... but adding a stupid layer to the game(which does not add realism for an unrealistic game) from an unreliable company is just plain ********. You have over 10000 posts but you must have a short memory.

The Cockpit Glass when first released by PGI (and FORCED) was a complete disaster.

To Quote one of the greats and people that love and play this game..

I like cockpit glass. But I want realistic cockpit glass.

This 'glass' or transplast (is what it really is; a translucent metal alloy) has a problem with how PGI renders it. When you look away from the sun, because of the lack of a 'backside' on cockpits, the glass shines and blinds you. When you look at the sun, the glass disappears. To me that is disgusting as it's the exact opposite of how it should be. So for now until it's fixed to work properly, I have mine off.

Edit: OCD on typos.

I thought that most Mechwarrior fans are proponents of immersion, however I do see opponents of immersion around still. I think they represent the people who play videogames to win and make themselves feel better by winning. People who support immersion tools are probably the folks who play videogames for the fantasy and escape they offer... Otherwise you could just go outside and burn ants with a magnifying glass if all you want to to is "beat" things.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

For the record, in terms of being a "Mechwarrior fan," all previous installments of the franchise lacked dirty/blurry glass. Mech 3 had some bulletholes and cracks if your cockpit took some damage (which is radically different than how MWO does cockpit glass), but otherwise you could see clearly.

In terms of playing video games for an "escape," that's exactly why I play them. Having blurry vision with weird scratches, smudges, and other random marks all over the place doesn't help me burn stress or escape from the horrors of IRL. If anything it is detrimental to that goal, by hurting my eyes and making me have to squint constantly.

its not "excellent" immersion. thats a gross exaggeration.

at best its a bare minimalistic form of immersion thats offset by the frustration it causes in reducing your visibility.

an "excellent" form of immersion would be one that helps captivate players in the game setting and doesnt frustrate players by making it harder to play the game.

adding dropships for example was an excellent form of immersion.

Got here in march 2015, cockpit glass was already in and never even tried to turn it off. Never had any problems with it. Most of the time I don't even remember it's there.
War Thunder has a system in which it simulates tunnel vision or screen darkening if your pilot is "overstressed" with sharp turns, too much G or whatever it is called in English. It works pretty fine, never heard complains about it. Granted, WT is not MWO with people complaining about everything possible.

Some minor screen edges darkening at high heat would not detriment your ability to fight, while providing a bit of immersion.Or not-centrally-located cockpit cracks when headshotted. Oh, I would like to see that one.

you know, in Mechwarrior 3, if you overheated enough, it would start causing the hud to go staticy and you could barely read anything, it caused reticle shake, and made it really hard to see your or your enemy's paper doll.

At MINIMUM, we should have that kind of thing.

Sadly, Cockpit Glass was implemented wrong, and not at all what we were asking for.

What we got Posted Image

What we wanted: [Via Mechwarrior 3]

See those cracks on the windshield, those are dynamic... as you take hits to the cockpit, you heard an audible "Crack" sound, and the cracks would appear. [also note the static hud elements from overheating due to a high heat build.]

Keep in mind, those shots from Mechwarrior 3, are from back in 1999...

Let that sink in...

Yup, all these cockpit crack, sounds and hud effects from MW3 seem pretty cool. We should have these here.

Funny thing, I think I remember that windshield dirt from viridian bog. I actually liked it. All in all, swamps DO have a lot of spores and other wet biological stuff flying around and sticking themselves to everything, so it was logical to have a dirty windshield, it gave me the "feel" of actually being in a swamp (as a beginner who did not know maps in and out, exploring them was pretty fun activity in itself). Other maps did not have that intense dirt (often no dirt?) as far as I remember.

Bash me if you want, but I was there when they've changed cockpit glass to what it is now, and I liked the previous version a little bit more. New one provides better view, but istn't as immersive as the previous one.

Why not also add an effect for the pilot that uses Jumpjets excessively?

If the JJs are used for more than 15 times in a match, the pilot become s seasick and throws up slightly in his mouth giving you random view movement towards the legs while he is trying to hold it in. After 30 times using the Jumpjets he can not hold it in any more and covers the controls and the radar with vomit. After using the Jumpjets 45 times in a match. it is all over for the pilot... the view goes all foggy, ballistic vomit coveres the entire screen and windscreen wipers are 15 MC per use.

Well the big thing with the old style windshield had a weird lightning dirrectional issue that even if it's on a dark map, there would be a weird artifical light that only showed up when facing specific ways, and it made it really hard to shot in some situations.

That being said, I switched the cockpit glass back on for a few games, and I'm still seeing framerate drops with it currently, so until they figure that out, I'd rather not deal with it.

if we were dealing with the old poptart meta, I'd agree, but that's kinda pointless at this juncture.

So, heat scale effects have to start somewhere... Why not start at the pilot?

Create a simple set of screen overlays and a pilot health ticker. Ideally, this would not involve modifying the HUD coding (since that is resource-intensive as is) and just be a fully-independent graphical filter that's laid over the normal viewing pane.

1.). As the cockpit gets really hot, the pilot's vision becomes slightly blurry. Effect generated just by adding a minor blur layer.
2.) As pilot is exposed to sustained heat, pilot vision becomes more hindered by vignette. (Basically, screen becomes black around the outer edge, emulating tunnel vision)
3.) Exposure to sustained overheat conditions (Mech shutdown) causes an overlay of "blood vessles" on screen to demonstrate that you're in serious duress. Vessles pulseate and obscure your remaining vision. Maybe add heavy-breathing/wheezing sound effect.

Eventually, pilot death if in an overheat state for too long. So, instead of dealing just damage to the CT when your Mech is shutdown from overheat, you deal damage to the pilot, too. If the pilot sustains enough damage during an overheating session, it dies.

Continual Pilot damage would be incurred as long as heat is over 90%, with expoentially more DPS sustained if heat is over 100%. The pilot would heal at X health points per second while heat was below 90%. If the pilot gets to a certain damage level, you die, but you heal over time when you are cool.

This would not require any changes to Mech mechanics. It would just be 2-3 layers of graphical filters and a behind-the-sceenes health system. This thread is specifically about a low-resource graphical filter set that can bring a VERY MUCH MISSING layer of immersion to the game.

Right now we are just Mechs. With my proposal, we would be Pilots in Mechs

(Think of the DireStar. Firing 9 ERPPCs simultaneously should cook the pilot to death while the Mech is still sustaining slow CT damage in the shutdown state)
I'm all for adding in MORE heat affects.

The stupidity of the current ghost heat system, allowing 'mechs to ride the 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% heat level for 15/30 minutes of game play has always seemed incredibly stupid and short sighted to me.

WHY PGI would ignore 30+ years of game lore, previous computer versions, etc., and the very fact that heat affects were SO important that EVERY damned pre-printed 'mech sheet has a copy of the heat affects table on it, I dunno, but it seems to be suspiciously intentionally ignorant on their part.

Not at all. Honestly, rather than having catastrophic internal damage, it should be randomly dealing 10-point crits to equipment. Maybe you burn out the cockpit, maybe you melt a heat sink. Since overheat deals the same internal damage to all 'Mechs, it's a mite unfair to lighter chassis as it stands.

True but I don't hold the patent on that idea saying you must use every bit of it exactly as I have it written. To coincide with your statement, I do have pilot effects listed which I was really wanting to gets across (and shamelessly reposting whole thing). :)

Air Conditioners are lostech in the 24th century?

Cooling a mech that firedd a lot of energy weapons is more like trying to keep the area immediately around the sun cool during a solar flare.

That's funny because... these mechs are made for space. Means its climate controlled. I think life support system is the reason why you don't get blurry vision or melt into the chair. Thats why before the pilot starts melting to the chair, the mech goes critical and explodes.
