Heavy / Assault user here.

With the current climate, current patch and meta.

I was thinking of dipping my toes into using lights, for variety. Can you fellow mechwarriors give me some suggestions to help me ease into using these little fast guys?

Specifically a mech I should try.

*Side note I have been reading both mechspecs and metamech for build suggestions.

Seeing youre clan and youre new to lights go with the artic cheater. The ecm will help keep u out of trouble and they take the most dmg out of any light.

If you really want to learn lights, go with the Squirrel Locust. Be warned though: you will get games where you'll be instakilled the moment you turn a corner when starting out. You will suck, hard, but mastering the Locust will improve your piloting skill a lot.

Other than that, it depends on your playstyle, e.g.
  • the Raven and Adder make great snipers. Just load up ppcs/erlls, poke, vanish and repeat.
  • chassis like the Arctic Cheater, Fire Starter, Mist Lynx, Spider are speedy ankle-biters, flanking, squirreling and generally being a nuisance to the enemy.
  • Then there are slow lights like the Urbanmech, Kit Fox which are more like mediums, but with less guns and armor. They're usefull as bodyguards for a larger target, e.g. to keep that enemy light off your teams DWF. Kit Fox deserves special mention for the triple AMS arm.

Special mention goes to the Cicada, which is a medium but plays more like a light.

Also the Commando is hit and miss, some people tend to do good in it, but most find it is in a bad state right now.

I prefer wolfhounds. ACH if clan but they might teach you some bad habits...

I'll second locust, the current locust trial is an excellent build and will let you dip a toe without spending any cbills. You also accrue mech experience using it, though you'll have to buy the chassis to spend it

For Clan mechs:
Easy mode: ACH, Jenner IIC
Hard mode: Kit Fox, Adder, Mist Lynx

Im kinda funny in that I mostly play assaults and lights. Right now the lights that are suiting my play style best are locusts and the wolfhound 2 w/ 6mpl and an xl 265. I love playing the lct-pb with 2mpl and 2sl. I would start with either of those chassis.

Arctic Cheetah - "new pilot friendly" (or easy mode); good hitboxes, ECM + CERML = good score lose or win

Jenner IIc - better customization than ACH, available laser and missile builds, but also more fragile (its a Jenner)

Jenner 7F - great agility but fragile (slightly better weapon placement than in Clan Jenners)

Locust 1E - godlike agility accel/decel/speed superb weapon placement (high mounts in arms), but extremely fragile and no JJ

My personal favorites:

Firestarter - fast, maneuverable laser mech

Wolfhound - Similar to the firestarter, tankier, but lacks hoverjets. looks cool though.

Jenner - just got gifted the Oxide and man it's a blast. D and F are pretty fun too. CT hitbox is kinda big though/bit of a mixed blessing.

Arctic Cheetah and Jenner IIC are also very mean mechs when I fight them, but I haven't tried them because they're filthy clan mechs. Posted Image

Cheeto and Firestarter are the best choices.

Personally I prefer wolfhounds to firestarters due to their toughness. Also STD engine wolf hounds are hilarious but firestarters are the better mech IMO.

I'm also a huge fan of the jenners but they aren't exactly newbie friendly.

Since you are an Assault pilot, why not use CUAC20 Adder? Pocket Assault, I like to call it. Posted Image

Also, Locust-1V is sturdier than la cucaracha.

To expand on what I was saying, a Locust will teach you map layout as well as how not to get hit. I will be honest though, they will fustrate you to no end while you learn them, but once you've got the personal skills needed for them down, you will find that you are a much better pilot for it.

Locust or bust. Teaches you how to play Lights properly, and it's awesome fun.

Locust is literally the most fun mech in the game. If you are looking for THE light experience, buy a 1E and go stab a direwolf in the back.
