You mean "jur"?

Because "jir" likely sounds like "jeer"

I say it like "gear" because I have a mix of southern and northwestern accents.

Yep. It's derived from the gyrfalcon...which is pronounced JEER-falcon.

So the following are acceptable ways to say Night Gyr:

Night ZHEER
Night JEER

The following are NOT acceptable and will be laughed at henceforth:

Night GEAR
Night GIRE
Night JIRE

It rhymes with "cheer" not "fire."
And the 'G' is soft.
