Broadwell-E may end up having the eDRAM as well, which is being announced in a couple of weeks. It either does a wonder, or it does nothing. There isn't much in-between, and it doesn't seem like it helps with most games.

We don't actually know if it helps yet to be honest
Broadwell didn't use EDRAM as a real cache, it's more like an accidental fallback cache

Skylake brought some architectural changes that uses the eDRAM as a full blown lvl3 cache
Time will tell if Broadwell-E has the same changes

Most games are hardly CPU limited these days
High core counts and HT needs to be kept fed, more cache might quite help in actual cpu bound scenarios
But besides MWO I don't really know more CPU bound games
Or well games that thirst for every little ipc strength you can coax out

That being aside
A cpu like that might last you 6+ years these days
Ehh
No competition I guess

The 1080 is the new 8800GT.

Only much, much more expensive. :)

You're not wrong! I think the analogy holds in that the GT essentially took its predecessor flagship, the GTX, to task (the G92s really were new cards vs the G80s), in the same way the 1080 really bowls over the 980TI, though the GT was placed a little below the GTX, while the 1080 sits above the 980TI, but that's all obvious and neither here nor there.

I think what's really worth noting about these two cards that have market similarities in terms of their upsets, is just how different the world of each is. The thing that really allowed the G92 to be a shock was that it came at a time when GPU development was still at break-neck speed, so you could just about match your predecessor generation's product, only a short time after its launch, at half the price or better (GTs were like 250 vs 500-600 for the GTX, iirc). Nvidia obviously will never be able to do that again, but it's amazing to me that, in such a post Moore's Law world, they managed to come as close to replicating that as they did.

Agreed -- the real winner here is going to be the 1070 (at supposedly around 980 Ti/Titan X levels of performance) at the non-Founder's Edition price (AIB land, so to speak) of $379. Makes the latest rumors about Polaris even more interesting, with the "benchmarks" being tossed by VideoCardz. Pretty wild time in the video card market, IMO, and the big drops in the used GTX 9xx market are reflective of that (a big gain for all those guys who want to go SLI instead of 1 generational upgrade).

Could get a 1070, probably runs games better than 970 sli, 1080 is overpriced.

Given that a GTX 980 Ti is already superior to 970 SLI at 1080p and better resolutions (with some overclocking), yes, a 1070 would be a nice upgrade (and, so far, cheaper than a used GTX 980 Ti, if that $379+ USD MSRP holds up).

Getting Radeon Fury/GTX 980 performance for $200 does sound pretty good, doesn't it? That might end up in practically all of our budget builds for a little bit.

I guess we'll have to wait to see what the GTX 1060 brings to the table price and performance-wise, too.

Don't count on Fury performance with RX 480. Realistically, it should sit somewhere around R9 390X and 980 in most cases. That still is a good thing, given it's price tag.

If the AIB cards have built-in OC up to Fury levels of performance (and there is more OC headroom), than it will be a HUGE hit. Otherwise, it will still do quite well, but won't be a knockout punch in its price range. And there is always GTX 1060, even possibly a 1060 Ti if AMD is aggressive, on the horizon.

Just a heads up for anyone who purchased an EVGA nVidia gfx card within the past 90 days!

If you have purchased an EVGA video card within the past 90 days then you are eligible for their Step-Up program! In other words, no matter what card you have now. If you made your purchase within the past 90 days you have three 1080 versions you can upgrade to, now! I purchased an EVGA GTX 970 FTW+ ACX 2+ card a month or so ago. I now have the option to upgrade my card to a 1080 SSC ACX 3+ card, or the founder's edition along with another higher tier 1080 card for only $319US. On top of this I can add an extended warranty for only $15US with an additional 10 year warranty that works the same as the initial 3 year warranty.
