With the firepower creep how do you guys compensate on the older mechs with limited hard points and tonnage? The alpha strikes now days make me feel like I'm playing CoD without resplendent. I know on my part that positioning is probably my biggest issue. Though being two shotted in anything less than a heavy is frustrating. I do front load armor so not a complete noob lol. Seem to only contribute when I'm in an assault since I came back after 6 month break.

There are no "limited tonnage" Mechs. Mechs range from 20 to 100 tons. An "old" 65 tonner has just as much tonnage as a "new" 65 tonner.

I don't see considerably "limited hardpoints" on old Mechs, either.
I used to pilot WHKs and SHC a lot. Or the KDK-2 with purely lasers because of its JJs.
A LOT of new/newer/newish Mechs have pretty limited hardpoints.

Besides: You can still use your Mechs' tonnage with limited hardpoints by fitting bigger weapons.

The problems you see with "older" Mechs are all in your head, not in reality.

Well, I'd say that the Pretty Baby is short a hard point because, quite frankly, it is. Currently, it trades a weapon hard point for an engine cap of 400 versus 380. That isn't nearly enough of a trade off when you consider that the hard points that it has are pretty awful - three energy, three missile; energy in the right arm, energy in the left torso, and energy in the head while you've got 1 missile in the right torso and two missiles in the left arm. It is an awful combination of bad but hey, at least you can go like 7 kph faster than the 9M.

Well... LPL in the arm, 2xMPL, 3xASRM4 (3 tons ammo), endo, ferro (legs at 63, head 17, rest maxed), 400XL, and 16 double sinks... Would be a decent brawler/skirmisher type if it had the hitboxes to support the XL... If...

I think TTK is about 3x faster than id enjoy at this point, but there are so many blind fanboys that youll probably get shouted down more than once.

MWO only gets worse.

You're not wrong, there. But, how is that extra 6kph enough to warrant the loss of a hard point? That it the ultimate question. It is similar to why the X-5 doesn't get AMS but, instead, can go 75% of max speed in reverse compared to 50% like all other mechs.

Let my Mechs collect Dust until the protective gain of the additional Dust-Coating is big enough to overcome the Powercreep my old Founders and Phoenix Mechs are incapable to counter otherwise...
...also the resulting touch of Patina will make them appear in a unique look for free!

Currently i use MWO pretty much as a little Test/Benchmark Software if new Drivers have been installed right.

The sad part is, with a 9M you lose 4.3 kph to run 3 points less armor, no Artemis, only one MPL, and 2xLPL with comparable cooling. Basically, the Pretty Baby is "pay to be different". I think the issue is that PGI was very concerned about calls of P2W with heroes, and the PB's design shows that they were far too conservative. Since PGI is loath to change hardpoints, the only option is to give it better quirks to equalize things. Which, for the most part, they have. As I don't have any Awesomes, I can't tell you if in actual application those quirks are worth it.

I'll take a look at xl though I have been able to shield with left side really well since I started playing them. the hunchback on the other hand no such luck. 70 dmg pinpoint alpha and I'm done for. I get you can't tank like the olden days, but being one shotted from fresh sucks. I think in the end i'll have to convert to the new hotness in-order to compete with my average skill at this game.

Thanks for taking the time to give a run down. I appreciate it.

no problem, Id advise against using the xl in the highlander, ive done it both ways, the alpha with the XL is nice to look at but its still all over the mech and then becomes very very vulnerable considering it has poor maneuverability AND durability you will find yourself raging against the mech. as a standard, it can tank alright, but its weapons load-out tends to be rather pathetic for a big assault.

Take this into consideration though, the regular highlander is still way better than its clan version which is garbage, so you have that to keep your spirits up.

The way I look at it ... as an experienced player, it's a personal challenge to go back and do well in the limited early Mechs in the current power-creep meta.

So, instead of pre-ordering Cyclops*, I'll be buying Awesomes for CBills.

I know it will be tougher to level them than the more recent meta-Mechs. But I know I can do it.

*I've given PGI way too much money in the hope they'd get their act together. It's time for new whales to step up and fund the game in hope of a brighter future.

you and me both, im picking up wolverines for cbills soon.

the only thing we could do is remove 60% of the positive quirks and add a ton of NEGATIVE quirks to mechs to reduce speed, maneuveribility and TTK and buff defense as armor.

Plus we are also on a high pewercreep level because basically everyone runs XLs now. We reached this point 1 year ago, probably 2, where XLs became the norm.

Defense of an standard engine is meaningless when everyone outruns and out-maneuvers you and manages to put double as much firepower onto your armor than you in less the time.

I hear firepower creep and laugh. I suppose now that there's another Clan 100-tonner on the field, I can freely show you the Siegebreaker Mk1 I used to run. No kodiak that I know of could unleash THIS MUCH firepower this quickly. I eventually scaled it back by like... 6 alpha damage so the heat could be a little more sustainable in a fight, but even so it outshines the Dakkabear by quite a margin.

That's a 100(120) alpha strike, folks. And was not limited to just brawling range.

You do realize this sort of Direwolf existed. Can still exist. Is completely playable. And is capable of eliminating a 65 ton mech in literally one second through the front center torso. Right?

shh, don't tell em that there are old builds doing 100+ alphas without even taking ghostheat.
theyd just demand more nerfs.
