You should try it with a mouse and keyboard if you really think they only have full reverse full stop and full forward. You can tell someone who is using a joystick when you watch from the dead box because their aim is terrible. If you are actually capable of outpiloting people you would be doing even better with a mouse and keyboard.
best of both worlds - use pedals & throttle + mouse
pedals & throttle will let you outpilot any kb pilot
mouse - gives you better accuracy but you lose the ability to 'track' targets in one linear motion...
me i still like joysticks even when piloting 150kph mechs...

The trick is to have the sensitivity as high as when using a mouse. It is way better than the built in joystick control. It requires some tweaking, a good stick that can sense the tiniest hand motions, and an AWFUL LOT of practice. But once your muscle memory has properly built up it is great.
exactly!
when learning the pedals i used to mutter 'left' or 'right' to myself... once you have muscle memory you don't even think about it... it just comes naturally...
when learning to use the joystick i set my centering force to 100% - it makes for a very stiff stick and placed the gain in user.cfg settings to 4.6 (8 is default)... then i slowly trained up to a gain of 10 with a centering force as low as 30% for light mechs...

Z-axis... Twist the joystick.
if possible get a pedal setup... the z-axis will cause you to have bad habits... and turning while aiming for a shot is not natural (you are twisting your arm while trying to get good accuracy)...

Now question time... as i said i plan to sue a joystick to start out with, its just now i own 2 joysticks Logitech Attack 3 (used in previous MW4 doesn't have twist axis) Logic3 Flight 2 3D (has twis axis)
the good thing is that mwo support multiple joysticks!
you can use the attack 3 as your throttle + movement (usually left hand) and then use your other joystick (right hand) for aiming...
the attack3 is a good choice because it has an ambidextrous grip...
i have logi extreme 3d pro that i can use as my right hand stick... i'm looking to get an attack3 for left hand...

i thought at the same idea...but you cant configure 2 joysticks i think...nvertheless you can try and let us know. )
i've tried because i had the G940 / Extreme 3D Pro / Rumblepad - plugged in at the same time and the game natively recognized multiple joysticks... it shows something like joy1_z / joy0_x
