What happened to playing a game for fun over the last 10 years?

I ask myself this same question a lot. Man, I hate to sound like the old guy because I'm not that old but I grew up with video games that looked like garbage. That's all we had. My Atari 7600 was givin it all she had! It didn't matter. We had fun playing video games. For me, it was mainly because there were so many really creative, inventive games coming out because the early video game designers were having fun playing with a new toy. They didn't care about marketing potential or research groups or any of the extraneous industry obligations game companies today have.

They were exploring a new art form. They were having fun doing it and the people that bought their products loved them. It was the dawn of a new form of entertainment. 30 or so years on and that same spirit didn't survive. Video games are established. They know what sells and what doesn't. Such stagnation comes with mass production.

There are some very interesting indie games coming out, though. I'm really interested in Steam's Greenlight program and where that's going. There's a bunch of great indie games that do throw the rules out and just have fun with creating video games. That's part of the problem in the mainstream market: the market took the fun out of making games.

I use mouse and joystick.

AT THE SAME TIME!

Before you call me an idort: I have a left-handed Saitek that I use as a snappy throttle and legs turning, so really it's superior to a throttle because no twisty silliness or pedals needed for leg turning. Wicket set of buttons in both hands, instant throttle demand, consistent turning ability, and I don't lose the aiming advantage of mouse.

Mouse and lefty stick beats the living hell out of how I was doing with my X52 (same as on the first page). Hell, trying to play MWO all classic-style with a joystick is what turned me harshly off it for the first week or so. Mouse aiming is just so much more surgical.

MWO seriously needs proper Joystick implementation, already. :P

My brand new Thrustmaster 6.00000 calls out to me from its box under my PC desk every game of MWO I play. I tried the workarounds et all but it just isn't there yet.

If I was playing Madden NFL I would cry out. "Come on... Man!"

You should try it with a mouse and keyboard if you really think they only have full reverse full stop and full forward. You can tell someone who is using a joystick when you watch from the dead box because their aim is terrible. If you are actually capable of outpiloting people you would be doing even better with a mouse and keyboard.

best of both worlds - use pedals & throttle + mouse

pedals & throttle will let you outpilot any kb pilot

mouse - gives you better accuracy but you lose the ability to 'track' targets in one linear motion...

me i still like joysticks even when piloting 150kph mechs...

The trick is to have the sensitivity as high as when using a mouse. It is way better than the built in joystick control. It requires some tweaking, a good stick that can sense the tiniest hand motions, and an AWFUL LOT of practice. But once your muscle memory has properly built up it is great.

exactly!

when learning the pedals i used to mutter 'left' or 'right' to myself... once you have muscle memory you don't even think about it... it just comes naturally...

when learning to use the joystick i set my centering force to 100% - it makes for a very stiff stick and placed the gain in user.cfg settings to 4.6 (8 is default)... then i slowly trained up to a gain of 10 with a centering force as low as 30% for light mechs...

Z-axis... Twist the joystick.

if possible get a pedal setup... the z-axis will cause you to have bad habits... and turning while aiming for a shot is not natural (you are twisting your arm while trying to get good accuracy)...

Now question time... as i said i plan to sue a joystick to start out with, its just now i own 2 joysticks Logitech Attack 3 (used in previous MW4 doesn't have twist axis) Logic3 Flight 2 3D (has twis axis)

the good thing is that mwo support multiple joysticks!

you can use the attack 3 as your throttle + movement (usually left hand) and then use your other joystick (right hand) for aiming...

the attack3 is a good choice because it has an ambidextrous grip...

i have logi extreme 3d pro that i can use as my right hand stick... i'm looking to get an attack3 for left hand...

i thought at the same idea...but you cant configure 2 joysticks i think...nvertheless you can try and let us know. )

i've tried because i had the G940 / Extreme 3D Pro / Rumblepad - plugged in at the same time and the game natively recognized multiple joysticks... it shows something like joy1_z / joy0_x

Just realized how rare decent left-handed or ambidextrous sticks are actually. Most of the ones I find are $15 trash.

When analog leg turning is in, lefty stick and mouse is gonna shine even more for me. Too often I catch that tiny smidge of turn command and it throws my aim way off.

thanks a lot for all the info from u guys especially Mycrus saying about MWO supporting multiple sticks :P and FEK315 thats an aws looking trailer!! closest thing iv seen to a film featuring Battlemechs!! maybe 1 day will see some high quality films made that will encompass some of the major Battletech history?? But alas i digress lol.

JOYSTICK FTW!!

(Oh Logitech Attack 3 is an awesome ambidextrous joystick that i got off Ebay pretty cheap)

I played Mechwarrior 2 with joystick and mouse (joystick controls movement and mouse aims) and that's a huge reason why I prefer to play even FPS games that way whenever they support joystick properly. Some old FPS games had great joystick support, but it got rarer and more basic later on. Would have propably dissappeared altogether if they didn't start adding controller support, which is similar in some ways and often can be used for joysticks.

But yeah, proper joystick support is really a must for me. It's just not Mechwarrior if I have to use keyboard. I've tried messing with configs, but there appears to be some difficulties. It's kind of hard not being to able to test it offline as well.

Wait until MechWarrior Online supports analog steering for joysticks than I show you why! :-)

Yes! this. I'm not great at these games but the lack of analog steering is handicapping me more than my poor skills.
That and the weird delay between pulling the trigger and the weapon actually firing. :)

Yes, the analog (incremental) steering is the point. Hmm, I do have some spare joysticks around. Might try this 2 sticks thing when it's implemented. I prefer to aim with the mouse, but that might be a lot of fun.

In other words, the days before multiplayer. Any competitive multiplayer game ever had these things, and MWO is a competitive multiplayer game.

Actually, MW has had a tremendous multiplayer following prior to MWO, and it has always been best played on a joystick. Further, MW was released at times when joysticks were NOT common. As someone who was alive then (wow I just said that) joysticks have NEVER been proliferate on the PC, ever. People bought them because, as with MechWarrior and a number of other games, neither a keyboard NOR a mouse actually provide a sufficient level of control (let alone an adequate number of controls.)

So, I don't agree that joysticks are a relic, and anyone who believes this is short a few experiences in the gaming department.

I do agree there is market appeal to making the game playable. I'm not contending that. But if anyone believes piloting a mech is best done with anything other than a multi-axis, throttle-equipped joystick... well, they're probably wrong.

You want to hear something funny that this thread reminds me of? My girlfriend (who is like 12 years younger than me) said "They TOTALLY stole that from Avatar (referring to a battlemech crossing the screen.)" In a way everyone is no greater than the sum of their experiences, and mistakes are often made with the best of intentions.

So many threads on this forum of people trying to make MWO into something it's not, like the Eternal September of 1993, the next time your pilot powers up his battlemech (any battlemech) tell me what he grabs with his right hand..

Yeah.. and there's a reason for that.

Mouse aiming might be easier but a good throttle with rudder flaps and a solid joystick gives so much more immersion - If i can combine that with TrackIR/TrackNoIR for HUD aiming then Im in heaven. Especially when I can use the below sticky.

I've this joystick and it's really hard, for me. I don't know if this game is designed for joystick but surely is not fully compatible. And it's strange in a game designed for joysticks. Is the first time that i must use config file to map my joystick. I hope in a future patch that makes easier e fully compatible.

i played mw4 with joystick also mektek was fun. I have x52pro at home and i tried it as soon as i installed game in november and that time it was completly unusable, i tried it also now since they added new configs etc but its just honestly same. Current implementation of circle for arms and croshair for torso is completly unusable with joystick. U cannot aim properly and u dont have that much freedom of movement compared to mouse. I allways play games for fun but i i like to be optimal and not disadvantage my self intentionaly just for puristic experience. But i would love to use joystick for mwo but i am not sure if there is any way how it can work with current aiming system.

In order for them to allow joystick players to be competitive, they're going to have to allow the Torso to look down at a more steep degree than is currently allowed.

I tossed in my Extreme 3d Pro joystick to do some play the other day, just to kinda test it out, see how the changes to joystick support worked out. To PGI's credit, the joystick configuration in game IS much, much better than it was back in Closed Beta, or even early open beta. I can map my joystick pretty much as needed. And the new control options help a ton.

BUT the limitation comes in Arm Movement vs Torso movement based fights. Being I played an Atlas for most of my gameplay, I wasn't shocked at the results I had... For the most part I could fight decently, but the problem came when Lights/Mediums decided to hug me. At that point, I was unable to pitch my torso down far enough to get any reliable fire on the enemy.

I don't like to hybrid my controls, If I'm going to run a joysick, I find it unacceptable to have to rely on a mouse for targeting input.

Perhaps someone who's been working with the VTC controller has had luck to mapping the Sight movement analog stick to mouse controls, that is the only way I can see arm movement working with a joystick, is having an analog POV hat. And the POV hat on the Extreme 3d pro is digital. So no luck for that stick.

Go look at the steel battalion thread.

http://mwomercs.com/...64-bit-drivers/

It's in, and it's working. Though I'm unsure if people have mapped the PVO hat to work as mouse input for the arm mounted weaponry

Gee Rifleman...

Life...get one...

Different styles are what gaming is all about...

I have used a joystick/mouse combo in MW since MW2...

I have also gotten the darn thing to work in this buggy beta...just fine thank you...

The joystick...with the sensitivity up to 25 enables me to turn as fast as a keyboard,...with more feel..

The Logitech G600 gaming mouse also gives me all the quick targeting resolution, torso twist and pitch required to hit a fly on your mech from 1500 meters...

You can play keyboard mouse...that's fine

But...I like my playstyle fine...

One other thing though...played Chromehounds on Xbox 360....the dual joystick config of that hand held controler is VASTLY superior to anything we have now in the game...one joystick controls turning...the other controls torso twist pitch...Just amazing conrol ability once you get used to it...

Like I said...many ways...to the same objectives

GET USED TO IT!

I have the same HOTAS, and I did use the throttle+mouse combo that Mycrus suggested for a while, but MWO's early joystick/throttle implementation was so bad that I gave up. I have yet to go back now that they have patched in improved joystick/throttle support, but I might do so one of these days. Heck, in MW Living Legends I was pretty much exclusively using throttle+mouse (only used KB+mouse for toading, throttle+joystick for aircraft).
