

Minimum Heat Sink Requirements?

How are these requirements established? It is weird because for certain mechs I can remove all heat sinks and still save (not saying that's a good idea, just that I can do it), but other mechs require a minimum of like 5 heat sinks (10 if you count what's in the engine).
Does it depend on chassis? Weapons? Something else?

most engines have 10 free heatsinks installed into them
but engines under a certain "engine rating" get less and less heatsinks installed into them.
i believe engines under a rating of 250 start to get less and less heatsinks, and it gets worse the smaller the engine gets? I am sure Konivig knows the correct ratings.

To calculate how many heat sinks are installed in an engine, look at the engine rating and divide by 25 and round down to the nearest whole number.
Also, note that double heat sinks that come with the engine (integrated) are more efficient than external ones or those subsequently added into the engine space.
Integrated double heat sinks have a heat dissipation capacity of 2 while the external and added* heat sinks are 1.4 (IIRC).
* Added heat sinks refers to those placed in the slots in the engine space.

I do wish they would let me remove more, though. You can't fit many weapons on a 30 ton mech, so the 10 minimum might be too high. I'm never even close to max heat. Something to consider if they want to buff super-lights in the future.

So, the basics:
All engines have built-in heat sinks, of the same type as the mech the engine is installed into.
The number of heat sinks in an engine equals the engine rating divided by 25, to a maximum of 10.
Engines rated 275 and higher CAN contain additional heat sinks, at that same rate of 1 heat sink per 25 engine rating.
Additional heat sinks installed in an engine, beyond the 10 built-in, stil weigh one ton, but occupy no critical space.
Minimum of 10 heat sinks for a mech to be valid to play, including in the Academy and Testing Grounds.

250 is the minimum to have ten.
Any less reduces it with the line of change being every 25.

It is how fast weapons consume ammo. Consider that the same engines are effectively as many tons heavier as needed to get ten heatsinks... as the first ten heatsinks are weight free as they are "part of the engine" even if they occupy slots and are placed elsewhere. Even so with an SRM6 and using it as often as possible in Battle tech it'd last about 160 to 170 seconds for a single ton of ammo. In MWO it lasts... 64 seconds without any quirks or skill tree at all.
Try some lrms?
Lrms give 60 extra missiles per ton over the Battle tech source. Srms... none.
It wouldn't matter if 1* armor and structure but MWO has 2* armor and structure. So yeah.
