Hey guys,

I just got my first 20 million cbills and im itching to spend it. As you can probly tell by the title, im interested in sniping/long range combat. Im sorry if this has been asked before, but all the posts ive found on the subject are 2-3 years old. Im sure the game has evolved a bit since, so just wanted to see what the current opinion on the pros and cons of them are.

Aslo some mech recomendations for each would be great, i feel clueless when i comes th the store and lab.

Thanks in advance! :)

Gauss requires Ammo, and a skilled technician to operate as it requires a short charge before every shot.

ER-PPC is energy based, unlimited fire... no charge time, but is useless when fired at targets within 90m.

My opinion? Get ER-Large Lasers or Large Pulse Lasers, the heat tradeoff is better, the DPS are better, they weigh less and Lasers are hit scan, meaning as long as you touch a target, they'll cause damage...
If you miss with an ERPPC you need to wait until it re-cycles(Cools down).

EDIT for grammar.

ER-PPCs do not have the minimum range only IS regular PPCs. ERPPCs are about 50% hotter than regular PPCs though, but have greater range, faster projectile velocity, and no minimum range.

ERPPCs are in many ways a long range AC10 that is really hot but doesn't require ammo.

Thought I was getting something crossed up. lol Thanks for the clarification DA.

PPCs- Minimum range 90m
ER-PPCs no minimum range, but run hotter.

I still suggest ERLL or LPL. lol

I used to love Gauss. It was basically a long range AC/15. But they have nerfed it....It's now a specialist weapon, and you need to have good timing to use it as well as aim.

If it were me, I'd Go ERPPC...unlimited ammo, no chance of "ammo" explosions, and no firing delay. It also has a better space/Weight to Damage ratio, and has a cool anti-ECM effect in some situations.

Gauss is still useful, but it takes a lot more effort, skill, and experience. It's probably the hardest weapon in the game to use effectively.

Details here are for mwo only (and not Battletech).

....
Gauss rifle has a default full damage range of 660 meters (modified by Ballistic and Gauss range quirks). It is one of the few weapons with a 3x range modifier meaning it doesn't become ineffective (0 damage) until exactly 3* the stated full damage range.
It has a lock of two charging/firing at once and a long reload. It is also heavy (15 tons plus 1 ton per ten shots) and fragile. Will do 20 damage to you with 90% chance.

ER ppc is insanely hot and firing more than 2 adds an additional heat penalty (but can be done). Unlike Gauss the shots are much slower but still fast enough for medium-long sharp shooting. They weigh 7 tons and needs at least 7 double heatsinks to support just it and a 9 second firing rate (comfortably, you can fire much faster but it gets hot real quick). It has an 810 full damage range and a 2* max range (zero damage at exactly twice stated range). Theyare affected by PPC and ER PPC quirks (unless it specifically specifies itself as a "STD PPC" quirk. Just "PPC" applies to both). (Legacy: it used to also be affected by Ballistic quirks specifically Range and Velocity).

Clan version distinctions. Clan Gauss is 12 tons + ammunition. Clan ER PPC is 6 tons and does 10 damage on impact and splits another 5 damage between two parts adjacent to impact (with a specific scripted pattern).

Battletech is a bit different. (Reg ppc has a minimum accuracy range of 90 meters as a penalty modifier for PPC charge up time. ER PPC's extra heat is due to removing that charge time). Gauss rifle has two states, Ready / Primed which basically meant it was powered and if the gun's mechanisms are hit the weapon will pretty much go boom. The other state is inert/unpowered and no go boom. The rate is once every 10 seconds rather than twice, but all armor and structure on Mechs is half, so one is twice as devastating).

Here's a tip to use the Gauss rifle for new players.

Link the Gauss rifle onto all of your unused firing groups. Then you'll see the weapons groups turn red around your crosshairs after you fire. It's much easier to see them turn green this way once it's charged up. After you've been using them awhile, you'll get a feel for the charging mechanic and you'll go based off of feel. You can always keep the button pressed down until the charge times out and then recharge them, it's much faster than wasting a shot if your enemy ducks into cover as well.

Now I have to start the game back up and try this. Thanks though, sounds good. :)

Getting back on track, if you're still interested in using ERPPCs, Blackjacks are on sale for the next few days, and the -3 variant has some nice velocity and heat generation quirks. Though with the patch coming up, I don't recall if it'll be keeping all of them?
