Jokes aside, I have played and enjoyed both mechassaults (even more than 4/mercs, those games were trolling for me) as what they were, arcade shooters in a battletechish context. To the OP, if you you ever played with a combat flight simulator, that is roughly the feeling of mechwarriors of old (1 2 3), takes a while to master all the systems/controls and takes even more (but that is much of the appeal) to learn how to customize your mechs, rather than in mechassault where they came generally in just 2 variants. In terms of pure gameplay mechassault is probably closer to gears of wars than to the mechwarrior games  . In mechwarrior the pace is usually much slower, with frantic spikes (i.e. when brawling), generally making each tactical decision/mistake more relevant. It is harder, and that is, to me at least, what makes the "mechwarrior" experience so appealing.

Obviously as the game is currently in closed beta under nda we do not know, apart from what the devs have said, what the thing is going to play like, so you'll find mostly speculations here!

Mechassault has it's niche, but Im sorry to say that it's take on the battletech universe doesn't really relate to what's being done here.

However, if you're really searching for more of that mechassault style of gameplay, check MechAssault: Reign of Thunder out.

Mech Assault had good things, like requiring visual contact for lock on instead of lrm boating and fighting without even seeing the enemy.
and iam glad it will be the same in mwo.

they should have made mechassault 3 instead of that reign of thunder thing, those mechs look lame compared to the BT mechs.

Hey guys i was wondering if this game is like mechassault? When i was a kid those 2 mechassault games were beyond fun. So many memories. So basically i am wondering if its like mechassault with all the mechs and their cool weapons? If it is like mechassault i will buy a founder elite package. Thanks! and sorry im new...lol(:

If you played MechAssault as a kid you were the correct target audience for the product. When FASA Interactive was started up, the man in charge was Denny Thorley, Denny came out of the console industry and wanted to take the FASA games to that market, believing that was the market, not to mention MS was looking for the killer app to put on the Xbox to compete with the existing consoles at the time. MWO looks to be going back to the earlier days of MW2/GBL/Mercs MW3/MW4 days. You will still have all the cool Mechs, and weapons, on top of that you will have the depth that was missing from the MechAssault game.

Hang on kid, while I admire your dedication, this thread and poster is ok. No trollish behaviour detected so far.

MechAssault remains unpopular (even hated) amongst most Mechwarrior fans because of its arcady re-adaptation to the original Mechwarrior games which were more sim-like.

And that is pretty fail logic. If they had called it the new Mechwarrior and made it that way then go ahead and be mad but why would people care at all about a new IP? I started with the tt game decades ago and Mechassault was fun.

Bite your tongue!!!!!!

If you are truly serious about the question... Then no - it is nothing like that travesty of a BattleTech game.

Just pitching in to lend my support to a polite OP who asked a simple question and had some people, thankfully in the minority, try to shout him down.

Yeah, MWO is looking more like MW3 than 4; slow and steady. Sadly, I just never really liked the mouse targeting of 3, though I really liked it (prefer that atmosphere over the others). However, when I went back to 2 after playing 4 a while back, I think I found 2 to be very similar to 4. 3 is probably closer to the authentic experience.

Thank you i am downloading a trial of mechwarrior 4 to try it out(:

If youre downloading the game you could just as well go for the full game.
MW4 is free and the full version can be downloaded from the net.

Or you could take a look at MWLL (Mechwarrior Living Legends), a total conversion multiplayer only mod for Crysis wars.

EDIT: Forgot to add link, http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/

Mechassault is pretty much disliked by a ton of die hard fans ranging for the Table Top to the Mechwarrior series (1 to 4).

I personally don't hate it, but I think they wasted a lot of potential by not using all the good stuff the Battletech universe has to offer.

Be advised Mw4 is outdated. It may not be the best introduction to the battletech universe for a new player in 2012.
If you have patience i would recomend watching the MwO gameply videos and wait for the release to take it to a spin.
Also if you like the battletech universe, check the wiki at

I'm just saying how it is. A lot of people hate the game. It had the same Mechs and it borrowed from Battletech. And as evident by OP, a lot of people think Mechassault is Mechwarrior.

Personally, I think this game is the one I've been looking for all my life. From everything I've seen or read about the game, I'll be playing till exhaustion overcomes me and I do a face plant on the keyboard.

Now now Grugore. Don't do that.

Scientific studies have shown that sleeping with your face on a keyboard is not very restful. In order to maximize your MWO playing time, you should sleep lying down on a soft surface, as this will regenerate your energy the fastest and allow you to wake up sooner for more playing!

Good man. Everyone knows that sleep deprivation increases your gaming response time, right?
