If you bought it last year before Oct 6th, you already qualified for the 2015 appreciation rewards. That was explained in the announcement about it LAST YEAR.

So? That was a different Program.
This particular program is specifying exact items to purchase.
If the item itself isn't as important as when it was purchased - then PGI shouldn't have named specific items and should have just gone with dollar amounts.

Obviously, PGI can do whatever they want - but by requiring specific items during specific periods of time - it makes those who bought the specific items (outside of the time period) and those who spent more than the desired amount (but not the specific items themselves) angry.

Do those people really have a reason to be angry? Here's the thing: this is a loyalty appreciation reward. it's not a sale on those particular items - the entire program is supposed to reward players who have helped keep MWO floating. Once you go down the road of disqualifying people who very clearly have been loyal - well that doesn't look good.

Sure, it's PGI's game to do with as they please; but that doesn't mean the gaming community has to give PGI any respect.

unlikely. this is a lower mid-grade video game... its not like #pinkgate which happened on a site with a 100k users every day and brought attention from an entire major consumer industry.

True, but Mechwarrior itself is a big enough name that any article which includes "Mechwarrior" in the title will get enough reads to justify writing the articles every now and then. And because this is an issue which allows the gaming community to get worked up and angry at a disliked and incompetent developer - that will also give the article enough attention to get links on Reddit and elsewhere.

Not to mention, the article could then go back to the whole Transverse issue and show that PGI has had a history of dismissing the whales who have completely funded their existence - the article almost writes itself. Just add a few pictures of new office decoration and voila!

OP had a point. A good one.

But seriously. The IS gets a Royal Stalker and the Clans get two variants of the most under-performing Clan heavy mech?

I'm a loyal customer and have supported this game in a large way, not as extreme as some, but very much more than your average. Not to mention, the above are just my personal purchases. I have further supported this game by holding contests on ILIKERICE's Phree Phract Phriday thread, maybe you've heard of it. On that alone, I've given something to the tune of 9-12 mech packages. You want to get into semantics? I could say I am more loyal than your whiteness, considering that I have attempted to maintain others interests in this game by giving them new shiny toys to play with. Not that I do it for that purpose, just happens to be a side effect I imagine, i don't know, because PGI tries pretty hard to scare its fan base away.

Can I buy those collector packs? Absolutely. That's not the point, or the question at hand. The question is how can one define loyalty in such a bizarre fashion, so late (8.5 months along) and not expect some seriously negative feedback.
Sadly, this chagrin has come to be the norm as of late, albeit entirely justified.

So yeah, I'm pretty f#@king loyal. Those "rules"? you can shove' em where the sun don't shine son.

At the very least, there should be a parallel monetary goal.

Oh hey, PGI is hiring, look at that guys

Rules are rules, I'm afraid. Looks like you didn't support in the manner PGI approved of. Maybe the 2017 Loyalty Rewards program will go better for you.

At least PGI isn't letting people with big wallets sway their judgement on how they want to run things.

First...I'm Happy that I'll receive the first three rewards tiers this year. Second, I'm pretty satisfied with a new Phract and a free medium mech, plus a bunch of C-bills. PGI did not have to offer any type of loyalty reward. So... Thank You.

Now...To the OPs point, I'll add that I kind of agree with what is being said. I bought two packs this year. The basic Mauler and second one was the P Hawk Basic Pack, plus the ReInforcements add-on and the K.K. Hero add-on. So I technically spent MORE than what is required dollar wise, but because I didn't buy the Collector versions... I don't get the I.S. Tier Loyalty Reward. It's kinda silly I think.

But hey, PGI can come up with any kind of rules they want when giving away free stuff. Player base be damned.

I got that email. Skimmed it. I already knew what mech collections were needed for the top-tier rewards. I think they emailed people because they KNOW the majority of players do not use the website, forums, or even pay attention to the in-game news feed. When I talk to my friends who play the game casually, amongst all their other games, they usually do not know there is an event going on.

Lawn darts are one of those few items ebay doesn't allow the sale of... you can auction your virginity, but not a plastic dart with a metal tip.

LOL, sure PGI shouldnt care about the people who spend {lots of} money on their game

2014 - got everything
2015 - got everything
2016 - will get the 100 games one, the mc one cos I spend a few bucks, will get the one for buying that base Kodiak pack
2017 - will get nothing
2018 - will spend the saved money on useless things like photo equipment, whiskey or hookers.

2013 - got everything
2014 - got everything
2015 - got everything

It was really easy those years - just buy a full collection IS/Clan mech pack and you're in. It was really simple and fair, and good value. Sure some mechs were not that good but it was a bulk deal.

2016 - I never liked this new model. I did not qualify for top tier with some standard packages and a collector+hero Kodiak package. I was planning on maybe getting the Marauder IIC standard but since I don't want the Summoners I'm out. And I'm not upgrading any of my IS packs to Collectors just to get the Stalker.

They intentionally did this "reward" program because they see that Collectors have not been selling well, and this is an incentive to spend more on the least value packs they're offering. It's not a reward progrem. It's incentive to make us upgrade to Collectors 1 year late (that nobody wants).

Well, you just very simply explained PGI's reward program.
" We know X did not sell well... so if you want the highly requested Y... Buy the damn X "

If you want to ignore some 200 people on your friends list ( which you can extrapolate to 2000 ) who ALL say that they did not buy the collector's because it has no value... You might wanna think twice when you see (G) mechs, and top-tier (I) mechs more often than collector (S)s.

"Sir, there is a fly in this free soup you gave me. I demand a refund!!"

You sure the soup was free?
If so, can I have that soup with the fly in it please?... I'll eat the fly too.
I'll be very happy if PGI gives me a permanently legged stalker.

Complaining about the free stuff means that I first get a stalker, then complain about why it is red instead of blue.

It should be a case of - Spend X amount of money to earn loyalty - however these are the packs eligible.

That would fix it, sure sometimes you might have to spend 20$ more if the packs you want are slightly over, but it would allow people buying the other packs to still get loyalty rewards they have earned.

Still think a simple bar that you fill up as you make purchases would've been the most easy and fairest way this time around (would've also include MC obviously)

The new pricing model has not given me a reason to go full collectors
Stuff doesn't even have custom geometry any more

2017 is the year of battletech and HBS
Back spending money when I actually see something being worth
But then maybe a game can't just hold ones interest 4 years+ without adding something more then a new skin every month and a map ever 3 months or longer times

What will be funny and so very PGI-ish is that next year they decide to "be responsive to customer demand" and take the advice of many of us above by making the loyalty rewards based on straight money spent. But given that this is PGI we are talking about, they will not announce such a change in "policy" until the rewards are announced, thereby pissing off all the folks who went ahead and blew $80 bucks on two "collectors packs" that they thought they would need to get the top rewards. The howling and demands for refunds on those "crap packages" will make this year's kvetching seem mild. And PGI will stand there exclaiming: "But we did what you asked us to do!" It'll be great.

Foresight based strategy and positive messaging: Marketing concepts that PGI really needs to look into.

No, you are assuming it didn't sell well. Neither you nor I know this. And if someone decides they want to buy or upgrade to a top tier pack because of loyalty rewards, good for them. I honestly don't care way one or other.
