In keeping with my desperate attempt to remain interested in the game, or the forums anyhow, i have another question for people.

What Do you think is the best thing PGI has done with this game, and what do you think is the worst thing they have managed to do?

To keep it fair, and making it harder for me, please give an answer to BOTH questions. No complaint without a compliment.

Best.

Artwork. Alex Iglesias work is extremely good. Best hire they ever made. Over all I like the look that he has created and how he has implemented changes.

Worst.

This is a tough one for me, narrowing it to just one but I'm narrowing it down to the implementation of the Long Tom as a singularly stupid final nail in the coffin for CW/FW or the mind boggling 3 mech leveling requirement.

In the end, I'd say the 3 mech leveling requirement simply because it has the most impact on the game and new player retention. It is also intimately linked to the pilot skill tree "placeholder" that we've had for 4 years now and places a real burden on new players, forcing them to grind heavily through poor chassis in order to improve the single chassis they desire.

There are many other ways that they could have implemented the grind, but this locks people into poor chassis for an extended period rather than giving them the opportunity to quickly move to other chassis and experience more within the game.

Best ... free to play Mechwarrior game, enough said. They couldn't have done better in that aspect.

Worst ... the game it self has so many issues and the fixes for them just take way to long. Example Faction Warfare when it came out the issues were announced it took a year for separate cues and a week or two for them to be done away with. Now PGI has another solution for FW but how long will it be? Another year?

Best: The underlying combat is still my favorite thing I've ever experienced in a video game. I just love it.

Worst: As bad as they are at balance, Faction Community Warplay Whatever is the worst thing about MWO. It's been pointless and unfun from day one and they have never meaningfully improved it. The marriage of wasted resources and crushed hopes is one truly made in hell.

Best: Toss up over art and current general QP game play. It really is quite good imho.

Worst: The near Herculean efforts PGI has put forth in taking the promise of community warfare -their self advertised "end game content", their premium mode of play- and gutting it, minimizing it, and soon eliminating it. Its almost like they want to punish anyone who was foolish enough to have wanted what PGI advertised. Anyone who believed in the promise of an "immersive game play experience" where you could "rewrite the history of the Inner Sphere" was a fool and they seem to want to rub our noses in our stupidity with the pretense that the only problem with the mode is the population distribution and not the lack of content. Worst indeed.

Worst: Their complete lack of understanding of what Btech is.

In order:

Best
1. Art assets and especially 'mech design. These might live on in future games for many years, and will be the enduring legacy of MWO.
2. Bringing back the classic 3025 designs, the heart and soul of the franchise.
3. Core gameplay is solid.

Worst
1. Game design beyond basic gameplay mechanics. CW/FP was never fun, basic game modes repetitive.
2. Neglecting the new-player experience.
3. Inattention to detail. Basic, EASY TO FIX things remain untouched for years.
(4. Balancing issues, could be better, but not as huge deal to me as evidently for some other people.)

Verdict: Solid arena death match with 'mechs, though promised to be more. Breathed a lot of new life into a stagnant franchise, I doubt HBS's future game(s) (hopefully plural) would've existed without PGI's work on the art assets.

This is hard for me, but the other way around, so I'm taking two Best's and one Worst.

Best:
Artwork, specifically the mechs. They are, inside and out, outstanding. Gorgeous. They make the game.

And

The overall mechanics and feel of mech combat. Not balance and such, but the meat of the game. Mechs have the perfect balance of weight and stomp. Really great, and why I've played so long

Worst:

Community Faction Warfare. It's never been very fun, and after three years of waiting is an immense letdown.

In my time-line, which is decidedly brief:

Best: I play from a lot of different places, some of them quite far-flung. This is the only game I play while hitting pings all the way into the 300s. Or, I should say that it's the only game I've seen playable at such pings and therefore playable in many different parts of the world where Mr Internet is not always up to snuff and/or servers are several parsecs away. I'd call this game unique in that sense.

Worst: Pretending that cleaning up mistakes and half-assery counts as development.

In the long-run, whole-picture sense:

Best: The artwork. Obviously considering it is the only thing that is held to a production schedule and maintains accountability. The prize is that it gets to outlive this game.

The worst: When the "small studio" decides it's going to dump a half-finished franchise-based product for a new kickstarter game.

Best: the Mech art, I suppose.

I honestly cannot pick one "worst" thing. There are so many awful things ...
  • the many instances of dishonesty with their customers,
  • the rushed/botched implementation of Faction Play without any matchmaker,
  • hitreg worse than other games and not even on the list of things to fix,
  • the way BT lore is ignored instead of leveraged,
  • the misguided focus to e-sports,
  • the continuing slap-dash approach to QA,
  • the initial decisions on game design that required the invention of ghost heat/quirks to address,
  • how the most high-spending customers are treated like every other (ie. badly),
  • the fits and starts between no game balancing and arbitrarily over-balancing.
How could anyone pick any one of these things as 'worst'? They are all critical failures.

Dammit...I forgot about RB's dream of "eSports"!

No idea how they thought that that idea would take a niche game with virtually zero new player retention and make it a big thing.

At least at the end some players are going to get a nice payday from a pathetic tournament.

Best.

Art Assets, though they drop the ball on the odd few mechs.

Real struggle to pick one thing that's the worse.

I can deal with bad hit reg, the fact P.G.I have crossed the line when it comes to bullshitting customers on what we can expect in the future and what they deliver, I suppose, even the MM so I'll go with.

E-sport crowd wanting to pick maps for their cookie cutter builds, and get XP at the same time, which caused the PGI's compromise of Map and mode voting, which makes the game very very stale and dull.

Best Thing:

First ever Mechwarrior game where the mech models visually change based on equipped weapons. Also, the mechs look absolutely amazing.

Worst thing - Persistent lack of substance, lore and fluff - One of the lore-richest settings in history is reduced to a deathmatch-like game, where winning/loosing and most anything else, simply does not matter. It's like making a Dungeons and Dragons video game where you only get to fight with swords, and you choose if you wanna play a human, dwarf, or elf. No story, no nothing. Ok, they tried to do CW / FW, but the implementation was so awful it only emphasizes my point.
