So the general consensus seems to be Improving the game is not as important as having Clans. :D

What happens when you take away the Clans from Mechwarrior? It's no longer Mechwarrior.

The original MechWarrior game was a MechWarrior game, despite not having Clans.

MWO was still a MechWarrior game prior to the inclusion of Clans.

Clans are no more required for a MW game than the Inner Sphere is.

Like many people, I got into BT/MW with MW2, which was all about the Clans, so to me Clans are a fundamental part of the MW experience.

I think if we got rid of radishes, then bananas will be better in a fruit salad.

What the hell are radishes doing in a fruit salad to begin with?

They aren't. Otherwise it wouldn't be a fruit salad. Your statement that I quoted is equating the clans with all the sins the game design has, and trying to reflect it entirely onto them. It is nonsensical because it does not follow. Taking the Clans away will not eliminate high PPFLD. Taking the Clans away will not suddenly remove instant convergence. Taking the Clans away will not fix the heat system in this game. Taking the Clans away will not add much needed gameplay variety. For that matter, taking the Clans away won't suddenly make the PHX or Vindicator any good, or any of the other terrible IS mechs any good.

Scapegoat, and a poor one at that.

Sorry, I was looking at it as a philosophic question, not a "I hate Clans" rant.

Like, what if there was a BT game that started in 3025 that everyone thought was great, but it followed the BT timeline. Adding the level 2 tech would fundamentally change how the game would be played (like heat wouldn't matter nearly as much). Would you advance the timeline knowing that the game everyone liked would never be the same?

Maybe I just approached the OP's question differently.

If the money I spent on clan mechs was placed in my current account, and the game was put back to 3025, I'd love it

However

Honestly?
Removing the Clan tech wouldn't make MWO better.

Removing the technicians at PGI who were responsible for the following mechanics and removing or restoring as appropriate would do something good for the game:
  • Firing rates of 3-19 times tabletop at full damage/heat ratings.
  • The "Skillz" tree.
  • "Rising Mech-Heat threshold".... something that has never existed in any Mechwarrior or Battletech game in the nearly 40 year history of the franchise.
  • Removal of heat-induced crit damage (Jan patch, 2013) in favor of Override system and physical damage. No longer can heatsinks melt, making thermal abuse so much easier to do thanks to PGI removing this key feature which kept so much ******** under check.
Now if the question was if I would be fine with not having Clan tech if MWO was set in the Succession Wars instead, then yes.

Konivig nails it again lol
