Let me say that awards are a way of recognizing a players accomplishment. This doesn’t mean they have to be visible for everyone else to see. A player strives to reach a goal and derives a sense of accomplishment when completing it. MWO exist due to a rich TT, PC gaming and a 100+ Novel ‘s detailing the exploits of the heroes of the Innersphere and the clan’s. For many of us it was their exploits that drew us to the game.

MWO ought to reflect that kind of legacy by helping to create the new heroes amongst our ranks. Here are a couple of suggestions for categories and types of awards that could be given out by MWO.

Medals and Ribbons would be awarded for different types actions or event. Each award is given for a specific type of completed event, mission or other recognizable achievement. The completion of such results in the player being awarded the appropriate medal and ribbon, multiples of those completions are recognized by the following system:

"Base" Medal/Ribbon = 5 completions
Copper Oak Leaf = For each additional 5 completions – maximum of 3
Silver Oak Leaf = For 25 completions - maximum of 3
Gold Oak Leaf = For 100 completions – maximum of 4
Silver Star = For 500 completions – maximum of 4
Gold Star = For 2500 For each additional – maximum of 3
Gemstones = A different one for every multiple of 10,000

Actual Medal/Ribbon Types:

Achievement Awards: This type might include (Names here are purely descriptive) but are not limited to;

Total Kills = Self explanatory

Double Tonnage Kill = Killing a mech twice your mechs weight
Triple Tonnage Kill = Killing a mech triple your mechs weight
Quad Tonnage Kill = Killing a mech four times your mechs weight
Quint Tonnage Kill = Killing a mech five times your mechs weight

Double Kill = Two kills in the same battle
Triple Kill = Three kills in the same battle
Quad Kill = Four kills in the same battle
Etcetera = Up to whatever the maximum mechs could be on the other side

Class Killer = Accumulate 5 mech kills per weight class (i.e. 5L, 5M, 5H, 5A = 1 medal)
Undaunted = Killing 2 or more mechs weighing more than your mech in the same battle
Damage = Take the greatest percentage of damage and still walk away the victor
Head Shot = Mechs taken out with a Head shot
Engine Core = Knock out a mech out by destroying its engine
Evader = Causing damage in a battle (minimum !0% of total) while taking none
Sniper = One shot, one kill
Survivor = Pilot survives 10 battles in a row

Scout = Received for locating four mechs in a battle
TAG = For tagging three or more mechs in a battle
Defender = Successfully held off multiple attacking mechs
Attacker = Successfully captured a position
Objective Met = This might be broken down in to multiple specific medals

And the list goes on

Campaign Ribbons: Given to players who partake in the successful takeover of a planet (success might include holding a planet for a given amount of time). Campaign Ribbons should also be given out to Units as a whole so that unit accomplishments are also noted.

Loyalty Medals: Given to players who remains with a House, Merc Unit or Clan for a year.

Certainly there others I haven’t even thought of, all the better so you can share some of your own.

There have been several threads on this, some seem to be in favour some don't. Personally I think they should be private to the pilot.

Private to pilot, with the option of making it public.

Yes, but there should be an option to toggle their visibility.

I've always enjoyed this concept. It gives us something to strive for...I mean, strive a lil extra for, especially if a few require some rather daring acts in order to accomplish.

Ribbons, medals, badges, achievements, whatever you want to call them, or use them all, maybe award us some stat bonuses, albeit small, with each accomplishment.

I just think to Morgan Kell's first entrance out of exile to the Lyran Court Ball...........

Each faction would have equivalent medals, and Merc units can have custom medals (or they would appear identical to whichever house the unit is currently working for).

Please don't give titles to pilots names so they can hang about outside the AH and pretend there cool ... Actually I think titles would probably be pretty good in MWO :)

Regardless of how individual players feel about this concept (achievements/accomplishments/medals/etc), the truth is this feature extends playability on the games it is implemented on - maybe not for "all" players, but many players. In fact, every time I hear a new game come out (on PC or console) that has this type of feature, I always hear my friends discussing "have you got this achievement yet?" or "hey, how'd you get that achievement?". Extending playability is a good business model, especially for Free-To-Play games (since the longer a player plays, the better chances of them buying something from the store).

I can hardly think of any games these days that are online multiplayer without this feature (this was not an invitation to start listing some, LoL... it was more of a general statement). I would like to add to your suggestion:

-Individual Players should have the option to keep private "or" make public for others to see.
-Players should have an option to "show others achievements" or "hide others achievements".

The above 2 suggestions to this feature would make everyone (most everyone?) happy. One final suggestion (to follow suit of some more popular games). Make certain milestone achievements (big ones, like ones that contribute towards the story progression of the game) reward tiny amounts of credits with the cash shop. Not a lot of credits, just enough to get low-cost (maybe just cosmetic?) things, while also teasing them into going into the shop and seeing all the wonderful things they could buy with real money.

Private or public doesn't matter to me. I just like to have something to achieve. If nothing else, its bragging rights.
