well to tell you the truth, the 2B is the only cicada i don't own, outside of the Hero... and i can't recall the last time i even saw one in game Posted Image

There are a lot of mechs I don't see, but that is because I don't PUG as much as I used too.

The viper seems useless. Hardly any armor and nothing special about it. I personally think it needs ecm to make it a viable medium mech but i just wanted to hear everyone's opinion on this.

am i crazy?

Yes! Yes! Buff the Viper!

I love my Vipers. My favourite builds are the 8xSPL Viper and the 6xSPL + 2xSRM4 Viper. It's a very fragile, but extremely maneuverable mech, so it's all about hit & run attacks. You also need builds that still have enough firepower when you inevitably lose one of your arms. That's why I don't like the 6xSPL in the arms and 4xMG in the torso, for example. Because it's basically harmless after you lose one arm.

I'm sure it will get quirks sometime in 2017. Until then, the real issue with the Viper is that there are only 3 or 4 good builds and a huge number of bad ones.

all i do is PUG, and i can't recall the last time i saw one.. Cicada's are very rare.. about all i see on occasion is the 3F, or X5 i think i recall seeing one during one of the summer events. But yea, Cicada's are pretty rare in pugs.. Not sure why though, i find them pretty solid mechs. Not super meta, but certainly no slouch. Just solid all around if ya ask me.

Sure, it can have a heftier alpha, but the point I was making is that the CDA-2B will have the better DPS in the end which is really important for mechs that can't match the raw firepower of the heavier mechs. The JJs are nice for certain maps, but considering what it sacrifices to mount that many it isn't as much of a plus as you think.

This is because you don't understand the power of jump jets that actually allow a mech to really jump like they are supposed to. There are very few maps that you can't dramatically take advantage of the jump mobility of this mech on and even the ones that don't really require JJs, maps like Polar Highlands, you can still find a use for jump jets. One of the reasons alot of people don't see the value of good JJs is because it takes a huge amount of practice to actually be able to use them to their fullest potential and very few people are going to devote several to dozens of hours in the training rooms learning how to use them effectively.

but because of the lack of armor the mech gets obliterated in close range combat more than a standard light!

agreed that its the best jumper in the game though. It makes good large laser trolling

Actually it is just about as durable as the standard light mech. In fact, if your going to get the most out of a Viper, you have to actually think about it as a light mech. Hell I even made the mistake of queing up my Viper to try to knock out my light mech KMDD a while back because I don't think of it as a medium. To me it is my "Go To" light mech of choice whenever I feel like playing something with a light mech playstyle but I suspect many people find the Viper lackluster because compared to most other medium mechs, it is actually lackluster.

I'm looking forward to the c-bill release despite the negative reviews.

It can't be any worse than the Phoenix Hawk, right?

I just bought DHS for one of my 3 PHXs last night (but still haven't driven any of them)...was that a mistake? Posted Image

The Viper could use some love, not a whole bunch, but a little is needed.

I haven't seen a viper in quite a few games, so they don't seem very popular.

Its still behind the paywall and not many people are willing to spend 20 dollars for 3 of them when their Cbill price will be pretty low compared to other clan mediums.

I'm debating picking one up when they're free or some IS mechs, like a Quickdraw maybe.

I get the power of JJs, you don't need 8 JJs to get that power though. There are very few moments where I'm like "Thank god I have 8 JJs"

As a shadowcat pilot I have to say vipers are a real PITA. Phoenix hawks too. Good thing there aren't more of them on the field.

I bought the regular pack a bit ago and haven't regretted it once so far, but to be fair, I've only been using the A variant I believe. It's quickly become a favorite of mine.

For me it fits into the way I play my Novas. Poke were possible to add firepower to the line/group, and once everything is confused, get in closer and fire while moving as much as possible (taking into account heat and map awareness). I very much like doing support while in lights/mediums, though I use the Novas more for skirmishing than the Viper because of armor differences.

Definitely treat it as a light, or you will get melted.

Edit: I only do QP for now, so thought I'd mention that.

Its junk, I regret it the most of the mech packages I bought this year. It would be okay with a leg structure buff and a 5-10% heat gen quirk.

The Viper is not bad... is below average: Its fast, but it is enough big to be easily targeted and legged, and this is worse wen you take into account that most builds are short ranged (ersl , srm, mg,....)
Oh, and his quirks are locked behind the 8/8 omnipod set, so most viable builds wont have any quiks at all...

I love my walking nose, but it really needs some help.

I say that all the time. The entire reason I like the Viper is because it can jump over 105m. The Viper rapid accelerates on it jets and always has plenty of burn time no matter what maneuver your trying to pull off. Hell in Viridian I can actually jump from one Plateau to another with ease, then hit the enemy from behind before jumping back to safety of the other Plateau. Those JJs are a huge advantage and the sad part is that this is the kind of jumping ability almost all mechs should have in this game.

You are truly overrating JJs to the point where you are making the Spider-5V sound legit... except the Spider-5V is arguably one of the worst variants in the game.

Having too many JJs tends to be overrated, especially when you're a Mist Lynx (yes, I could do more with less than 6 JJs on it).

While it isn't as bad as the Pixie or the Vindi, it does suffer quite a bit compared to other mechs, including the Ice Ferret (only due to quirks though, if the Ferret had none, the Viper would be better).

Viper has no ECM or MASC capability, therefore Pixie is not inferior to Viper

ECM and MASC don't mean anything when you don't have any arms.

Spider 5v also is a light mech with just 2 energy hardpoints that also happen to both be stuck in the CT.

At least Viper can load up arm mounted weaponry, do some fancy jumps, and actually shoot people mid air and continue on its way.

Considering you have lasers, it is generally a bad idea to shoot in mid-air due to HSR being really weird. You use JJs to get into and out of places, that is really it, and you still don't need 8 JJs to do that.

The only real map that truly vindicates having 8 JJs is HPG and those walls which you can jump up on from any level on that map.
