Well, if you're thinking free for all as in a Solaris mode, then it was originally put on hold because Russ said they could not get a replay function to work. That was back in July however, and I have stopped paying attention to what he says since everything seems to be answered with "big announcements at mechcon".
Pretty sure if a visitor to PGI asked where the restrooms were they would be answered with "Oh, I think we will have something really exciting to tell you about that at mechcon".
So to answer the OP's question: Who knows? But I am certain you will find out incidentally more, maybe, as to why such a mode is not in the game...at or following mechcon.

1.Announce Solaris at Mechcon, despite having suggested otherwise.
2.Push back Solaris because reasons. Usually, pretty bad ones.
3.Decide to scrap Solaris, having either wasted the development time or secretly never committed.
4.Implement a FFA mode of play to some of the maps, gradually filling to all of them.
5.Receive significant criticism over their butchered FFA mode.
6.Make a few minor tweaks until it's decent enough that people shut up.
7.Move to the next promised feature, which shall either be broken or whelming on delivery.
8.???
9.Profit - and would you like to buy a mechpack?
10.Have I gone cynical or am I just pragmatic (and humorous in that exaggeration?)

7. Russ posts on twitter that all the problems players have pointed out were known and were for some unknown reason allowed to go into the game by mistake.
8. The following week there will be an announcement (and an event) celebrating the new and improved FFA mode now known as "Solaris VIII(eight)" with a new dedicated leader board being the only thing new or improved about it.
9. White Knights will Ignore the utter boondoggle of its development (see elements 1-6 above) and focus only on the crappy Solaris mode that we now have and assert that all that is wrong with it is because PGI once again listened to the player requests.

1: When you want a break from the ordinary FW/ PUG play
2: To steam off frustration by yourself for example
3: Test yourself, how good are you alone?
a:Test your mettle in 4/ 8/ 16/ 24 player FFA divided in 5 brackets of Light, Medium, heavy, Assault and mixed (which have even nr of mechs from the different weight classes)
4: Betting on players, top 3/ 4 (depending on how many in FFA) and add at least 2 - 4(?) pure spectators slots for those that dont want to battle but enjoy the show!
5: Win different prizes, going for top 3/4 etc (again, depends how many can battle against eachother)
6: Solaras could have a 1 vs 1 for the very top tier players, battling for the grandest of prizes. You clanners would love this, Zelbringen or what you call it.
7: (solaris 7 no pun intended) Maybe make Solaris 7 intervowen slightly with prestige prizes if you battle for your faction, only for LOYALISTS ( you mercs have more advantages alredy
BONUS! 8: Want to go lone wolf? Perfect place! Lone wolf and possible win for your faction or for yourself if you so desires. Noone will nag you for going full ego and survival of the fittest
If people want team solaris... erm as some have alredy said elsewhere, Puglandia are alredy some kind of team "solaris" abomination.
I so badly want something like FFA Solaris 7 to happen.
I can go on, but I'll stop there...

2) since its something that they didn't have in their original plan, they will put it behind some form of paywall. Like they did with stock mode.
3) its PGI, if they do come out with a FFA mode, they WILL **** it up.

Some will trash it no matter how good it is. You will say its good if its good?
What if its a paid for expansion? This game cant make money?
Games like Star Citizen are selling vapour ware ships for 3000.00 dollars but that's ok? Star Citizen complete in 2025 is ok but this game trying to do things properly and make money is bad?
You think I kid about 2025? I'm not. That game wont be able to do half what it wants to do or says it will do until 2020.
Why? Because some of those ships they are selling for 3k each need 20ish players per ship. How many players in a detailed world can they fit per server and not be a complete lag fest? What kind of computers will be needed to run something like that? Think they can fit 4 ships like that into 1 battle? What about the fighters? 200ish + players with mechanics like that game has will be a lag nightmare with todays tech. Ever hear the stories about the very simplistic(dont say it isn't compared to SC) games like Eve and the lag they have at big battles?
There are stories of guys spending 3 hours trying to get into important battles totally lagged out....

Bigger question is will I be around to comment on it at all? I haven't played in over two months now (I did log in to claim the free cent, and will log in to use up my MC on 1/2 priced mech bays just in case I come back....but).
FFA should have been a mode ages ago. Even just as a placeholder for Solaris VII. It would have given people that just wanted to play without the hassle of teams something to do. Instead they tried to force everyone into the square hole of team play. There are some (several that I invited) that got tired of trying to carry only to lose more often than not and walked away from the game. It was low hanging fruit that PGI ignored and funds lost.
I myself have always wanted FFA in game and have been a big supporter since CB here on the forums. I funded the game with the hope that it would happen. Was even told that it was about 2 year away...... 3 years ago. So now, with all I've seen from PGI on CW and stock mode.... I have no hope that a passable FFA mode will ever be brought in. If they somehow were to do so, I would of course sing its praises.... but I'm afraid that that likelihood is incumbent on me being here to play the game. A likelihood that grows dimmer and dimmer by the day.
(waxed a little poetic there
As far as StarLord.... couldn't care less. Not interested in what they are conning people into.

then go with a 2 (or 3) stage vote screen
1 pick mode
2 pick map (not all maps available in all modes)
3 (post vote screen) pick mech (within same class)

Wait... VIII is eight? I think IIX was eight in roman numerals! I've been wrong for a full five minutes!

Also don't know if you're aware of games like Call of Duty, Overwatch, Counterstrike, but these are all team games, death match or otherwise. Not Free For All. Free for all is frankly out of date for the most part.
