EVE Online is, of course, an exception to that. But isn't EVE always an exception?

Yah. They would have stretched that fee out into 12 easy, monthly payments, and thrown in a second invite for free, but only if you ORDER NOW!!!

Anyone who want's to join a unit. The only way a unit gets the C-Bills to pay for the member invite ticket is from the members donating to the coffers. Pretty obvious that many units are going to make the new members reimburse the coffers for the invite ticket costs once they are in.

Sounds more like Clan Ice Weasel. They were a competing business on Strana Mechty until we showed that they had created what we call a pyramid scheme. Nasty business there. We are the only ones who still hold the records of their existance, since they were the only Clan I know of to fall apart completely due to economic unrest.

Lol still wouldn't do it well people wanted an economy so I don't feel sorry for those who asked for it.

Grade A suckers, that's who. Even a Clan Diamond Shark unit wouldn't have an outrageous entry fee like that.
Actually the unit doesn't set the price, PGI does. It scales based on the size of the unit. As your unit increases in size, the cost per invitation goes up.
For example, we spend about 2.5 million from our coffers for anyone who gets an invitation from us. It's non-negotiable. It comes right out of the unit coffer. Some units ask new hires to reimburse the unit for the cost of that invitation. Seems fair as it prevents people from joining your unit just drain the coffers or whatever. Unfortunately with PGI's scaling system (in an effort to curtail unit sizes for FP -- where it hasn't mattered in a loooong time) never being adjusted as FP fell outta vogue, things like this can happen.
Given MS's dissolution and return to it's previous units, undoubtedly some miscommunications like this were bound to occur.

PGI should care about it, if it has anything to do with community performing fraud-like actions. Don't know the whole story here though...

I don't know that anyone asked for membership fees to join a unit. This type of issue in the OP is the first thing that came to my mind when PGI announced this. It doesn't have the effect desired and becomes a griefing method.

Well last time I checked very few have really ever enjoyed an economy game.
Making one person pay that much is stupid. Units should all pitch in an equal amount but again imagine the community destroying itself again.
PGI may remove the join price but I doubt it.

No one in the community ever said let's have an economy that rickrolls it's playerbase. You're misrepresenting things there. This is PGI's scaling, not any units.

When I joined MGA, it was free, but I think the unit paid about 1.5-2 million from its coffers (127 members there before me). Of course, I voluntarily donated to them more than that amount.
PGI set this fee to discourage huge units but it certainly is not working.

In the case of [-MS-], it is probably different. It is more about paying helluva extra than PGI's set amount, to earn the privilege of joining a proven CW unit.

Actually in larger units, it can absolutely get that high or higher per invitation. At just 50 members we pay 2.5+ per invitation at this point. And it goes up every invite.
