Just to kill some time while we're Alt+Tab'ing and waiting for the next match to begin.

What's your single favorite map and why?

For me it's River City. Despite the fact that it's too small, despite the fact that the Citadel dominates the gameplay too much, despite the fact that the River leads to a lot of stalling and sniping. There are so many boring matches on River City, it drives me nuts. Because this map can actually be so much fun.

When you get a good urban brawl in the crowded areas of River City, when mechs are clashing between buildings and knocking over traffic signs and lamp posts, it's almost always a good time. Any time both teams agree to engage somewhere away from the Citadel, this map is so much fun.

Nothing beats a good urban brawl in a Mechwarrior game. It's just a pity about the Citadel and the river, which ruin what is otherwise a fun map.

I kind of enjoy all of the current maps... the reworks really improved Terra Therma and Viridian Bog for me, and those were the only two I really disliked.

Overall the one I look forward to most is Polar Highlands. It's a little bit slanted towards long range, but I find it interesting and the good kind of a challenge when I'm in short-range 'mechs. I really like that it doesn't really have that obvious place where we always go, which makes it a lot more interesting to me. Open, natural terrain vs. that arena feel (which the gameplay tends to have even when there's no explicit arena).

Despite the balance issues, I've liked Escort mode in how it forces the combat to map sectors which have seen little use.

I honestly LOVED Canyon waaaaay before it was played every other game years ago when I was maining my Spiders. Great flanking, many escape routes etc etc.

Old Therma was my VERY close second. In Assault, if you have a Lance willing to flank for cap and win, then that's an easy win. If the enemy is rallying up to the center, gathering a flanking force and cornering and the enemies is also fun. Also, who could forget the heat <3 Machine gun/Flamer Spider was my way to go <3

I don't have a particular favorite, but I'm digging HPG for the brawl-guaranteed map and Crimson for the hectic brawls when people start brawling

BOG. I wish it was the size of Polar. New Frozen is close now but it entirely depends on my team will to fight(yay) or camp(nay.)

Bog. Nice mix of medium and short range. Lots of routes and flanking options. Dropping down or sneaking up is always fun. Looks nice. Not that much hotter than average maps.

Tourmaline. Long sight lines for sniping, high vantage points, avenues for flanking, good performance on lower end PCs, brawlers have relevance, neither side feels too favored, and to top it off, it's hotter than terra therma so pilots that have no heat discipline because they clamor to the cold maps with their 5 large laser IS heavies or ultra laser vomit clan mechs shut down all the time.

I prefer Terra Therma. Its heat has no hold over my NGyrs, while other mechs languish!

I like River City for much the same reason as the OP. As soon as you get past the river and the citadel, everything else is just wonderful.

I particularly like spawning on the western side, because I can cross over to the eastern side and hide in the narrow road/valley by the spaceport -- if I get outnumbered I can retreat there and pretty much limit the attackers to fighting me one at a time. I still die, but it makes the risky flanking maneuver less risky. When it does work, you can roam around the rest of the eastern side and cause chaos, particularly hiding out on the upper portion around F8, with good sightlines and lots of cover.

It's a bit less fun spawning on the eastern side, as crossing over to the western half by yourself is a lot trickier, but if you can get your team across the fighting is still pretty fun. If only they mashed the two halves of the city together and just did away with the river...

Caustic Valley.

Good mix of open area, corridor, and tight clusters.
Although 99% of the match revolves around the volcano, game mode like Conquest force player to break into small lance and skirmish around capture point. Most capture point are isolated from center of the map, denying the lace assistance from the main body, except the occasional LRM.

I tend to like hot map as it test a pilot heat management, and discourage alphaboat.

Tourmaline. Fairly balanced and allows a variety of styles to succeed. Also looks good and no arbitrary vision hindrances.

I guess I hate Tourmaline the least. Followed by Canyon.

A new Canyon style map with a bit of an old frozen city play style would be ideal. I kinda feel like sketching it out.

<3 Bog. Especially when it's foggy. Foggy bog is best bog.

I like the flanking options it allows for Lights. I like how unless the team is paying attention, it can find itself easily split up. I like the many many many overwatch positions you can take. I like the cover it offers even at ground level in otherwise flat areas; all those chitinous shells to dodge fire behind. I like how it is hard to maintain range.

Notice no one had said Plexus. Eff that map, especially on Domination.

My favorite maps depends on my currently selected mech, or weather I'm using a brawled or LRM boat..

For LRM's - definitely Polar Highlands and Alpine peaks.

For brawling - Mining colony and River City.

Viridian Bog and Canyon network are also good for mixed builds.

I absolutely hate Frozen City and HPG Manifold, partly due to overplaying, partly due to them being too build specific.

Terra Therma is the visually most beautiful map, it they only toned down the darkness somewhat.. Tourmaline desert is annoying since its very repetitive, we always end up on the same spot, and depending on the side, get slaughtered.. Same with Grim Plexus..

I think that would be Polar Highlands. It's a salt mine the likes of which you wouldn't believe.

I like it because it's the opposite of Canyon or HPG while still providing enough cover for brawls to happen.

Favorite map depends on mech but I would say Terra Therma. All the laser high pin point alphas get pushed to the way side for cycling their weapons or suffering over heat death.
