MechCommander 2 Download - perfectly legal
« on: May 10, 2007, 06:30:35 PM »
Just in case someone wants to familiarize themselves a bit with the whole MW atmosphere, here's a little gift from our friends at the world's largest software company:
http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en
That is a fully working download of MechCommander 2. Yeah, that's MechCommander, not MechWarrior - strategy, not first person shooter. It is called Shared Source because basically, you'd be able to work on the source files for the game, but to play, that isn't necessary.
P.S. This is a post by a member of the MWLL forums, and the original page is here:

At the bottom of the program window, I double-click the only icon given, labelled: [DT - 0] (G:) MCG
This brings up MCG (G:) and shows all the files for the game.
If I double-click the icon named MCX (which I believe is the .exe) the game will start, the opening cnematic will run, and the first briefing for the Original Campaign will play, but when I click "Begin Mission", the game crashes and gives me a chain of ASSERT error messages.
Also, if I click on the Purchasing or 'Mech Lab buttons in the game interface, I lose all further interaction with the interface, and have to make a concerted effort to get the game to close.
TL;DR it's not working for me.
It does not work being run from the disk image, I believe it needs to be able to write to disk. It did the same for me when I first tried it then worked fine once I had copied the files to my hard drive.

All you need is a old windows copy.
myself is running a win 95 PC on my Vista 32bit system.
Makes me able to play even the oldest stuff by emulating win 95
Actually, that is the hard way. Especially as most modern virtual machines do not have windows 95 drivers readily available. In comparison all you need to do to get it working without a VM is
1) Download the image and mount it to a virtual drive.
2) Copy the contents of the virtual drive to your hard drive (I used C:\Program Files (x86)\MCG).
3) Go into the new directory and write click on MCX.EXE then select Properties from the drop down box.
4) Select the Compatibility tab and select Windows XP SP3 (others may work but I have not tested them) and check the box to run as Administrator.
You are now ready to run the game by double clicking on MCX.EXE.
Once I read a forum post on how to do this the whole thing took about 5 minuets. When I tried to get virtual machines to work with Windows 95 to play old games, the setup process took the best part of a day (mainly hunting for drivers) and then found that VM software does not support 3d acceleration for any windows version before 2000.

I lost mine years ago, and I still wonder where it disappeared to. You're absolutely correct, the artwork is absolutely beautiful.
Also, the MC1 mission where you have to kill a convoy before it reaches a gate guarded by two Raven-Js? **** that, I spent hours more on that one mission than the rest of the game.

If you bring a bunch of long-range weapons you can run up to the river and engage the clanner mechs and even provoke the Cougars to jumping over to your side. I'm usually able to destroy the Cougars and at least severely damage both Hunchbacks that way. The convoy moves slow enough that I have time to get across the bridge and position my forces before the vehicles show up. Its really easy to take the convoy down if you don't have to deal with four mechs on their terms.

Now I followed the instructions on that site but to no avail. The colors are the same ingame so its impossible to see anything. I have been messing with the compatibility settings but that does nothing as well.
SO... Any thoughts?
