You are absolutely right that LRMs will do you (little) good on T1/T2.
My only lurmboat is a HBK-4J I've had since I was down in low T3. I never used it much but used to rack up massive damage with it every time.
I pull it out once in a while in T2 (almost to T1 now, will be before Feb) and I just can't do jack with it usually. Even when I do OK with it I'd have been better off with literally anything else.
None of my other mechs have even backup lurms.
Goes the other way too--I rarely have much trouble from opposing lurmboats in most situations. Once you have enough experience and are good enough you generally know where not to stand/go which is the biggest lurm mitigator. That and you'll rip apart any lurmboat who tries to get LOS for their own lock on you.

I've found a big thing is consistency. So I'm trying not to have a 900 damage game followed by a ZERO damage one (I put more back armor on my Stalkers)
I can now see the gold bar move, I was at Tier 5 with NO BAR at all for a long time. I did not even know there was a bar until I read it somewhere, lol.
Thanks for all the support. The forums here have made the difference for me.

I have noted that as I get my skills back I tend to have more up games than down, though as a light pilot primarily it seems hard to survive most games in the face of long range heavy Clan firepower.
In games where the light lance sticks together, I seem to do much better than in games where fast, jumpy mechs (looking at you, Spider pilots) go tearing off to find the enemy. Since I've been leveling the Adders to master (Prime, A and D) I spend more time hanging out with the long range heavies and assaults rather than among the lights and mediums, watching a flank and the back for the enemies fast, jumpy mechs trying to hyena pack an assault.
Am I wrong in believing that the ancillary awards like Lance in Formation, Protecting, Scouting, Flanking and the like count more than kills?
I've been keeping my damage up into the 300 point range recently as well, though I tend to end up with 6 to 11 assists and no kills. Not sure how assists, kills and damage figure into the meter either.
Basically, as the old skills come back and the tactics start to sink back into my brain, I've watched my positive scores increase. I still occasionally find myself getting ambushed as I look for a good, out of the way sniper or LRM spot...mostly by fast mediums or packs of lights...and at times I've run my Adder A in to grab the enemies attention and turn them away from the main push (after I've shot off all my LRMs) and they aren't very durable under a hail of gunfire no matter how I dodge and weave. I've always figured a good death that brings victory is better than scurrying to hide and losing.
Anyone got a good post on the Tier system and how it may work?

Although that is close to impossible, at least you won't be seeing the same T1 players and getting stomped all the time.
I was stucked in tier 2 for a very long time, as I used to use LRMs and streaks to farm cbills, it inflated my psr and against the main crop of tier 1 those weapon systems are usually depressing.
So I had to 'learn' different weapon systems mainly the ballistics weapon system to try to be competitive in T1.
Using meta mechs helps in getting constancy, but for me personally I just use whatever mech build that suits my playing style and try to adapt to your team as I usually just solo pug.
Group drop maybe different as the psr don't really work in the group queue and your builds should be best synchronize with the team. In other words its almost a different ball game in group queue;-)

How?
- learn from your past mistakes (eq charging by yourself, not aware of where your buddies are, be in the front or at the back alone, walking into a group of enemies instead of back off, etc)
- ask for inputs from other players on what you could have done differently. This is so important.
- become "ONE" with your Mechs - different Mech has different playing style. Brawl/snipe/lasers/dakka/etc, Stick to that Mech until you can say you know exactly how to do good damage (above 400).
It will come to a point where your Tier level will get maximized and it's no longer a source of interest for you.

Tier 4 to 3 was a shock, tho...
I've noticed that too - man the learning curve is steep ! Also, I don't know if it's bad luck or if the matchmaking has been especially bad recently, but I have found myself in a run of games with total idiots in my team and despite trying to encourage some form of collaboration we have bombed badly. In this situation it is really hard to post a decent score and then the inevitable loss of PSR comes along.
Why is the jump so much more severe between 4 and 3 - is it due to the mix of abilities and "luck" with the matchmaking?

You can be 200M away from someone, and they still wont even look/shoot at you. It's hilarious.
Play smart, run a good build - you should hit 600dmg each game and be T3 in 4 weeks tops.

ECM is a big help in solo drops but also a group queue can really do wonders if you align yourself with good players.
Having the good fortune to start with a Tier 1 account I was thrown into the deep end. Dropped it down to Tier 2 and eventually got it back. There is no better teacher then experience and I had to learn things quickly, and you do from better players.
Keep going and have fun.

I simply cannot see Mechs that are shooting me at any distance past 4-500 meters. I've had people tell me that they were going to take out my head and then do it 2 minutes later. I HAVE to target just to get a square that I know where to shoot in.
I put money I did not have into this PC only to find out that another Video card, oddly, NO OTHER video card but this one that I installed years ago will work. So now it is in worse shape, I see enemy mechs "transport" about a corner sometimes. I do not know how to express the stress and depression that time put me through. I cannot even go and talk to the PC guy anymore.
And since it now takes 10 minutes for Chrome to load, I'm reminded of my stupid decisions every day.
The game needs losers. For someone to win, someone has to lose. I'm playing the role as the loveable loser. Until I find something else to do.
That is why I'm starting new accounts. I will play one until everyone knows that ID as a loser then I will make another.
