BAP shutdown detection only works within 90m I think. How often do you get to use that? Even without BAP we can usually tell if the mech is shut down, the only difference is the Target Info paper doll.

I usually do the "active probe" stuff: A single laser into mechs not lying flat on their back. If reticle turns red, more lasers will follow. If it stays yellow, I march on.

That form of "active" probe is only effective if you know to watch for your reticle to turn red. New players aren't always going to know that. More than once I've achieved a tie or a win on Domination games where I've powered down inside the circle, been shot by an enemy, and because I didn't panic and power up, they moved on to keep hunting for me.

Which is even rarer. How many newbies even know how to hide by powering down?
Besides the ECM canceling effect for locking with SSRMs or LRMs, there's no decisive reason to invest 1 ton. But people still do. Why? Same reasons with AMS or Backup weapons. In case you need it.

Maybe once the Triple-AMS is introduced, it could tone down the Lurmageddon happening in the lower tier.

Canceling ECM up close has more advantages than just for SSRMs or LRM locks (which is only moderately helpful for LRMs I might mention). If you have an enemy ECM mech that close to you, it's often a good thing if your allies can also see it on the minimap. Players will follow a red marker on their Minimap a lot easier than realizing that "so and so" has a "low signal" on them... AKA: It helps with team information. And information is ammunition. (Lets see if you get the quote!)

There's also the range boost of active probes which is useful if you want to stand outside the normal radar range/line of sight of enemy mechs and still lock them up for your team. That's why the high mountain on crimson tide is useful to get on top of even in a mech without the weapons to shoot back down to ground level. Just being able to provide locks / monitor enemy movements can often turn a rout into a win (or at the very least...force the enemy to go through hoops to then kill you up there). Back to the discussion of this nova though... being able to reach spots like that... to put the AMS units into an unobstructed place to engage the enemy missiles thru 240 meters of their flight path and not merely 120 while also shooting the enemy LRM boats with 6 ERMLs would be very useful on a team.

Build 2 for sure. It is great for anti LRM, which we all need, new people even more so. The meds keep it simple. Awsome!

Knowing now that we're getting L-AMS, I now retract virtually all of my arguments in favor of my build. I'll take the Triple L-AMS NVA with loads of heatsinks and 12 Micro Pulse Lasers.

In reality I still prefer my build(#1) but can definitely get behind build #2 if I'm not having to use 2-3 tons on AMS ammo.

I have to admit that the laser AMS was one of the items I was really interested in seeing.
I am curious to see how it will work.
Either like a standard laser weapon that will add heat as it fires..... or possibly a set heat penalty to the mech while the AMS is online.....

Will definitely be testing it out on the Nova.

I'm very certain it will only add heat when fired/used.

I think the LAMS will be better served on cooler running mechs. It would probably be a bit problematic to be in the middle of a fight and overheat because of your LAMS. However, that does now give LRMs another strategy to try... If they see they have LAMS, fire missiles anyway and see if you can make them overheat...

Still feel the triple AMS Nova here would remain a solid build, even with the new tech. The 10-12 ERSL build is also still solid as a champion, but I still worry about that range with new players.

(I'd love to do a dual AMS with my Huntsmen, but the second AMS system is on a Hero pod, which you can't purchase separately. And I'm not about to buy a second hero just to give something a try...)

Why would the D(L) be the champion? The (L) stands for Loyalty. It was prereleased as a customer appreciation event.

I want to thank everyone here for the weeks of helpful discussion. As a send off I wanted to create a video to those newer players that will be using this trial mech:

aaand they have chosen the triple ams Nova, with less heatsinks than the hero adder. WOW, amazing, especially with LAMS coming thats seriously the worst choice now..

It might be, or it might not be.Depends upon how LAMS works.

I'm thinking this wasn't a good time to present a new champion, as when the new tech hits some of them may very well become obsolete.

I wasn't disappointed with the Nova selection, as either Nova presented would have been great (with the tech at this time). I'm more worried about the Adder. We got another "mid to close range" light mech champion added in. Something that I find the Adder doesn't do as well as other mechs. (Not saying it can't do it though.) Maybe I'm just disappointed that my own Adder didn't make it... but there didn't seem to be much variety with the Adder selections.

I would like to thank Larsh for his contribution and congratulate him on having his build selected as the champion.
The NVA-S has been my favourite mech from the time I started using the Nova.
It is now the 4th NVA-S in my mech bays and the 19th Nova I've purchased.
Earning the additional XP with it shall be just that extra bit sweeter!

Nova-S

Triple AMS + 1.5ts ammo
4ERM left arm
6ERS right arm
just left and right mouse button needed ;-)

Stay with the big boys until engagement, then flank left or right whatever range is needed

Allaround good performing supportmech, perfect punsh on medium too short range without too fast overheating for newbees and suppressing much deadly rain for the whole team and itself.

Have fun
Rick out

you really should be firing all 6 medium lasers, chain firing only gives your enemy more time to do damage back to you, chain firing is only good in emergency situations when you have a full heat bar and still need to do damage.

instead, get your damage out, so you can focus again on shielding damage and piloting.
