So I want to spend some cbills on mechs in the sale.

Normally I would get 3 variants because I had to. however with the new skill tree this is not required.

Does anyone have any strategy for the new system yet?

Very difficult to purchase anything knowing that there is going to be massive change in the near future.

Buy the ones you like, that look cool or offer new playstyles?

buy only what you want as you don't need to grind all the variants you hate simply to level the one you like

This is probably the single best update this game has seen, very community friendly, thanks for whoever had this idea

do not buy for quirks only tho. allways go after hardpoints and base mech statistics. quirks will change but the hardpoints and locations will most likely not, having reliable loadouts for said mechs that also work without the quirks may be key later on when said quirks change. More hardpoints the better even if additional ones are low slung. High Hardpoints and XL abilitys are good. high build variety is better. keep in mind that you never have to use all hardpoints and that meta builds are not necessarily the best.
Example:

Centurions work with ballistics + srm meta build whise but you can change the AC10 for 2 med las put more ammo and have both arms to shield with while still reaching 52 alpha damage and running cold, depending on variant you may carry more or less lasers vs srms tho.
High guns are good but guns at cockpit high/close to it are better due to convergance and long range accuracy.

Avoid mechs that allways increase theyr hitbox when strapping on weapons unless you are prepared to play arround that.

Mech shape and size are detrimental, you don't want a wall you want a barrel or plane shape at best with arms that can shield. the more depth a mech has the smaller the front profile is the better you can avoid taking hits.

Locked equipment may size down the mechs free space, allways check builds before buying to avoid variants with unnecessary equipment or inability to actually carry what you want.

You should allways have 1 light 1 medium 1 heavy 1 assault. you may want to chose the best in between the spaces your mech tonages instead of buying more mechs of the same tonnage so that you can allways fill out the max aviable tonnage.

never sell anything, you may need it later and buying stuff again will cost you more than it may need.

Never buy a mech for XP bonus.
Cbill Bonus mechs are better, if it is an omni chose that variant, you can change all pods and still keep the cbill bonus, however on Battlemechs they may not be the best variant due to hardpoints/hardpoint locations.

diverse hardpoint locations are better than those that put everything into 1 or 2 locations even if it spreads your alpha since you wont be disarmed as fast.

endo is better than Ferro.
XL is better than standart even on IS.
ECM is better than a weapon hardpoint however may prove unnecessary in comp t4eams where there are many ECM mechs allready.
AMS takes a weapon spot. the more ams you and your team bring the better your anti missile defence. mechs with 2 or more ams are preffered even if it means sacrificing extra weapon slots. (Quick play only until mrms/IS-ssrms)

max engine size is not important so far however 50 is minimum speed nowadays unless you want to be left behind. some mechs can only go slow and/or may require you to buy another engine, at that point you may as well go for a more expensive mech first if you allready have the engine for that one.

Whatever is good now will still be good in the new system (if or when it ever comes) and vice-versa. Even taking into account Russ's comment that some under-performing mechs will still have base line help (quirks or otherwise), the fact is: that if those mechs are in fact under-performing now, they will still be under-performing in the new system.

So a buying strategy for the new system would be the same as for this system. High hard points and/or lots of em and the ability to boat single classes of weapons is ideal (don't want to have to split effort an XP on different branches of the squirks tree). Other than that, buy what ya like.

To put it bluntly , wait and see.
We still don't know how/if there will be balance changes through the skill tree, that is to say if all mechs have the same values per tree or some instead of 2.5% per node will have 5% per node so some mechs might get "super" quirks again, or something like that, but all of the above still stands, quirks are the first and most often ones to get changed and "balanced".

Find a ****mech you like the look of and buy it, learn to play with your 40 ton weighted training clothes in some of the worst robots in the game, and then receive skill.

Buy mechs that are not dependent on quirks. Best advice I can give ya.

Lol... Thanks to whoever had this idea. It's actually pretty sad to even state such a thing, and that's nothing against you man. But I think whoever originally had the idea of three mechs in order to master needs to get slapped.

Do you look good riding around in a certain mech? Buy that. I don't buy ugly mechs Posted Image

I also buy mechs I liked in the novels and older MW games.

When the new system hits, you can save money by just buying the strongest variant and ignoring the rest since you won't need 3 to master anymore.

With the change in system I'm just avoiding buying redundant mechs. Wish i had thought of that before buying that third Spider. Tempted to get at least one Locust since they're so cheap at the moment. But I had a bad experience in their initial release... Then again I also had awesome experience on Terra Therma where I overheated and the guy wandered off when he couldn't find me! xD

No one knows.

But for me...I am follow my original strat, which I started in Feb. 2013, I am buying, with cbills, every mech in game. 280 mechs and counting.

So, just buy what you like for now. Everything will change soon and no one can say how it will affect mech selection. I have a feeling 85% of mechs will never been seen again. . .. Just get the one with the best hard points and go at it.

Since every mech i ever bought has been systematically ruined after purchase my new strategy is don't buy more so the same thing can't continue to happen.

Its simple and it works.

Tbh just buy the ones that you want to play. The 3 variant system won't affect (as far as we know) the new system, so buying 2 others is pretty much pointless in the new system. Don't buy for the stats/quirks like others have said. The meta changes and PGI is more likely to change numbers/stats than they are to change Mech geometry. I'd encourage trying out other play styles as well.

Yea I bought 1 Viper just to have a 40 ton mech option hoping the rule of 3 is out.

Buy as many as you think you might play while the sale is on.

I'm buying stalkers right now, because they are expensive normally. Posted Image

Edit; in regards to 3 to master, that never influenced me as I get ALL variants anyhow.

You play with the mech you enjoy and forget everything about meta, KD ratio, cost etc because your free time is precious and nothing is sadder than grinding for virtual **** you don't like in the first place.

Out of two dozen mech chassis I tried, I ended up running a dedicated Narc RVN-3L which is probably the LEAST common config in MWO history and I absolutely love it. Find your own style and make the most of your own time.

My addition to "buy what you like" advice - buy different things, make diverse loadouts - and this will keep you entertained much longer.
Also for roleplay reasons you can buy mechs associated with your faction. Makes decisions easier. List can be found in BattleTech 10979 - Combat Operations.
