Mech Purchasing Strategy?

Normally I would get 3 variants because I had to. however with the new skill tree this is not required.
Does anyone have any strategy for the new system yet?
Very difficult to purchase anything knowing that there is going to be massive change in the near future.

This is probably the single best update this game has seen, very community friendly, thanks for whoever had this idea

Example:
Centurions work with ballistics + srm meta build whise but you can change the AC10 for 2 med las put more ammo and have both arms to shield with while still reaching 52 alpha damage and running cold, depending on variant you may carry more or less lasers vs srms tho.
High guns are good but guns at cockpit high/close to it are better due to convergance and long range accuracy.
Avoid mechs that allways increase theyr hitbox when strapping on weapons unless you are prepared to play arround that.
Mech shape and size are detrimental, you don't want a wall you want a barrel or plane shape at best with arms that can shield. the more depth a mech has the smaller the front profile is the better you can avoid taking hits.
Locked equipment may size down the mechs free space, allways check builds before buying to avoid variants with unnecessary equipment or inability to actually carry what you want.
You should allways have 1 light 1 medium 1 heavy 1 assault. you may want to chose the best in between the spaces your mech tonages instead of buying more mechs of the same tonnage so that you can allways fill out the max aviable tonnage.
never sell anything, you may need it later and buying stuff again will cost you more than it may need.
Never buy a mech for XP bonus.
Cbill Bonus mechs are better, if it is an omni chose that variant, you can change all pods and still keep the cbill bonus, however on Battlemechs they may not be the best variant due to hardpoints/hardpoint locations.
diverse hardpoint locations are better than those that put everything into 1 or 2 locations even if it spreads your alpha since you wont be disarmed as fast.
endo is better than Ferro.
XL is better than standart even on IS.
ECM is better than a weapon hardpoint however may prove unnecessary in comp t4eams where there are many ECM mechs allready.
AMS takes a weapon spot. the more ams you and your team bring the better your anti missile defence. mechs with 2 or more ams are preffered even if it means sacrificing extra weapon slots. (Quick play only until mrms/IS-ssrms)
max engine size is not important so far however 50 is minimum speed nowadays unless you want to be left behind. some mechs can only go slow and/or may require you to buy another engine, at that point you may as well go for a more expensive mech first if you allready have the engine for that one.

So a buying strategy for the new system would be the same as for this system. High hard points and/or lots of em and the ability to boat single classes of weapons is ideal (don't want to have to split effort an XP on different branches of the squirks tree). Other than that, buy what ya like.

We still don't know how/if there will be balance changes through the skill tree, that is to say if all mechs have the same values per tree or some instead of 2.5% per node will have 5% per node so some mechs might get "super" quirks again, or something like that, but all of the above still stands, quirks are the first and most often ones to get changed and "balanced".

Lol... Thanks to whoever had this idea. It's actually pretty sad to even state such a thing, and that's nothing against you man. But I think whoever originally had the idea of three mechs in order to master needs to get slapped.

But for me...I am follow my original strat, which I started in Feb. 2013, I am buying, with cbills, every mech in game. 280 mechs and counting.
So, just buy what you like for now. Everything will change soon and no one can say how it will affect mech selection. I have a feeling 85% of mechs will never been seen again. . .. Just get the one with the best hard points and go at it.

Buy as many as you think you might play while the sale is on.
I'm buying stalkers right now, because they are expensive normally.
Edit; in regards to 3 to master, that never influenced me as I get ALL variants anyhow.

Out of two dozen mech chassis I tried, I ended up running a dedicated Narc RVN-3L which is probably the LEAST common config in MWO history and I absolutely love it. Find your own style and make the most of your own time.

Also for roleplay reasons you can buy mechs associated with your faction. Makes decisions easier. List can be found in BattleTech 10979 - Combat Operations.
